Follow University of Arizona PhD students Caden Howlett and Chance Ronemus up the eighth-highest mountain in the Andes (Cerro Mercedario, 6720m). The purpose of this expedition was to sample a vertical transect for low-temperature thermochronology, which will ultimately inform on the timing of Andean mountain building. Please reach out with any geology-related questions and I hope you enjoy the video.
Our work is part of an interdisciplinary effort to understand the geologic evolution of the Andean mountain belt (TANGO; the “Trans ANdean Great Orogeny”). Funding for this research is provided by the Frontier Research in Earth Sciences (FRES) program and the National Science Foundation (NSF).
