I was at this game - a 10 year old English lad cheering on Northern Ireland - it's still the greatest individual performance I've ever seen on a football pitch.....
The great thing about him ws he willingness to tackle, to work to play without fouling. Of course he ws a wizard, a phenomenal talent but he was so honest and brave. Unique
It may not look quite so impressive these days but remember, back then the ball weighed as much as a small child, the pitch was seven miles long and matches often lasted 3-4 weeks. Truly, these men were giants!
I was at this game, then very young, and the first international I had been to. I remember the great roar at the goal. Winsor park was absolutely full. The penalty was strange, and still not clear why it was given. I remember Best's boot coming off, and he took a corner with his left foot without hesitation. Great memories.
After 15 years after his death, people are now remembering the football (and not his inability to deal with fame at that extreme level) as George hoped they would.
jinky johnstone great but not in georges leauge after 12 or 13 games for man utd he was playing for northern ireland if he was english or brazilian he would have been playing for them as good as anybody who played in a world cup
I just found this video. Best was some player. I think it was a week later Scotland thrashed England 3-2 at Wembley. Not exactly the same team though. Baxter played at Wembley. Didn't see him in this video.
@eire32freedom You are correct when you mention the All Ireland Rugby team. There should be an All Ireland Soccer team also. But as things stand, it is Northern Ireland, the team is called Northern Ireland...Ireland is a different team altogether. I am not being political in what I say. That commentator has to be able to tell the difference between the two. I think an All Ireland team would do really good in soccer. I think you would agree on that .
It's hard to add or improve upon many of the excellent observations made here! .But in today's game of BS,Glamour,Mass marketing, Advertising,big Business and so on &it has to be said over paid,poor value for money Tossers! The fans pay to see&back their Clubs(Corporations)and National side of course! But football is meant to be about entertaining, excitement,fantasy and in this game Georgie Best provided all of the above!....He was like "Roy of the Rovers!"
