I've heard of command performances before - but never command viewings! Hal March portrays Dick Fisher, one of the musical's two producers in the story. Dick Fisher was also known as Richard Fisher, who worked in production, and later as assistant to producer for the series.

Hal March, I'm sure you already know, was the first actor to play Harry Morton, for many years on radio, but only for the first 7 episodes of the TV show.

@fromthesidelines 10 лет назад
Hal appeared several times in guest-starring roles, through the first season of the filmed series, in 1953. That was probably George's way of professionally saying, "Any time you can appear again, let me know", after March left the show at the end of December 1950.

@@fromthesidelines March was all over TV in the mid-50s until his $64,000 Question caused a scandal and killed his career. He died of lung cancer at 49. Meanwhile Burns smoked a cigar all through his shows and lived to be 100, outliving Gracie by many years

George loved to tell the story of a doctor advising him, "Stop smoking cigars- they'll kill you!".....yet he outlived the doctor.

At 6:38 actor Hal March makes his entrance. In early Burns and Allen episodes Hal played the part of next door neighbor Harry Morton.

I forgot how much they plugged Carnation Evaporated milk back in the day on this show. Ah, childhood memories.
@fromthesidelines
@fromthesidelines 8 лет назад
That was their primary sponsor during the entire series' run. Sponsors wanted their "money's worth" when sustaining half-hour programs- and George and Gracie gave it to Carnation, with interest!

+Barry I. Grauman Indeed, I'll take commercials from the old days over the slop they promote now. if it's not a lawyer, it's one of those mesothelioma and/or some other medical problem, a CONDOM commercial (saw one the other day, kid you not) or an ad for one of those useless made for tv products that never work when you get them out of the box. Boy, times have changed and not for the better.

Actually, CBS originally owned the series. In a trade ad published in BROADCASTING magazine, shortly after the start of the series {December 4, 1950}, they stated: *BURNS & ALLEN, sponsored by Carnation Co., {is} a CBS Package Program that has scored the outstanding hit of the new season.* In the fall of 1952, George took control of the show from the network, producing it on film through his "McCadden Productions".

I DO realize that I am probably mistaken,but was the taxi cab driver at the start of this episode also in the movie "It's A Wonderful Life", also portraying a taxi cab driver?

That was Lee Millar (who wasn't in the film).

Yes! Hal March originally appeared as "Harry Morton" during the first three months. Then he had a commitment for another series on the West Coast [the show was originally telecast live from New York through the end of 1950], and George graciously gave him his release, inviting him to return in guest star roles whenever he could. This was one of them. And it wasn't the only time Hal would appear with one of the later "Harrys".

It's hard to believe there were FOUR Harry Mortons, and they were all very different from each other. The hook of third one (Fred Clark) was that he ate everything in sight. The hook of the fourth one (Larry Keating) was that he was very prim and proper.
