I grew up on Carlin since the age of 5, the man shaped so many opinions and thoughts I had growing up I’ll always be grateful for that. I loved his thoughts on english, people, and life. He was such an inspiration.

I had three truly transformative experiences as a teenager, I read “Catcher in the Rye” and became obsessed with it, I listed to “Nevermind” by Nirvana nonstop, and I watched “Jamming in New York” by George Carlin a thousand times. That made me who I am.

Curious why you like " Catcher In The Rye " so much. I've read the book a few different times throughout different periods in age and maturity, and could never figure out why people thought it was so great.

I was 12 when Jamming in New York came out and I watched it. My first time ever seeing Carling, aside from when he was Rufus. I never laughed so hard at his standup, and it also stuck with me. I always kept coming back to Carlin because he could put into words how I was already beginning to view the world.

@@LucifersDeathSquad the first time I read it at 15, I fell in love with the pure angst and personality that oozed from how the story (or lack thereof) is narrated. Holden as a character and narrator is consistent to the point of annoyance both with how distant the writing feels from the actions in the story and how stuck he becomes on random trains of thought. Reading a few times since then, I enjoy just how thorough the thought process of Holden as a character is (though in my last reading I was so frustrated in the way I get frustrated thinking of my own mistakes as a teen and how things could be done differently with hindsight) and the feeling that Holden is telling his story as a way to avoid talking about his depression and having not dealt with his brothers death. TL;DR depends on your taste in literature I guess. Honestly Im the type to gush about any media I like so I hope this comment was at least insightful.

I personally think “catcher in the rye” is one of the worst books I ever read, but it always seems to be that way, people either love it or hate it, but that’s the sign of not just a good book, but a great book.

I was born in 1990 but had the same experience with my father giving me his albums except they were CDs at the time in the late 90s and early 2000s. The difference is I got to hear Carlin at his most cynical which heavily influenced my thought process as a teenager.

Literally the same here. My dad is also religious but loved Carlin. And loved his use of language and his philosophical opinions. He let me watch when I was probably too young. In this very moment I realize how thankful I am to my dad for that. Carlin helped shaped my love of language, my healthy skepticism, and my detached support of things (never fully succumbing to the identify of groups).

I'm so glad when I hear celebrities share stories about Carlin. He was, and still is one of the best of all time. I remember when I was 12, listening to AM&FM when It first came out. I too had to use headphones so my folks didn't catch me! Besides making you laugh your ass off, he could also make you think about things in a different, more intelligent way. His classic routines, books, records and HBO specials will live on for more generations to enjoy! **Scary Note: The youngsters who work at my local smoke/vape shop have never heard of Carlin, or even Pryor, Dangerfield, or Kinison! Isn't that SCARY?

Totally different growing up in the UK, I honestly had no idea Carlin was a stand up comic, I knew him as Rufus from Bill and Ted until my mate asked if I’d ever seen his shows/specials and this was as the internet was taking off, I don’t know why but not many people over here were aware of him until Netflix became available with most of his specials on despite him easily being one of the Goats.

Tom is still kinda new to me as of the last like 3 years, he is still a fresh comedian to me. Kevin.. well my dad raised me on his films just like stand up man. Clerks, Dogma, J&SB, Chasing Amy, etc. And like I said... stand up, Pryor, Chappelle, Burr, Murphy, the late great McDonald. I was raised on SNL and MadTV, more so SNL (my dad just loved comedy but he just naturally leaned more to SNL, which made sense cause he grew up with THE greatest eras of SNL being born in 64) but to just... have a MOMENT with Carlin is like meeting a God. This broken old man had guided generations with his HAHA bullshit comedy, and solidified him as a founding father of stand up. I have 2 comedy vinyl, both from my grandfather, Carlin and Martin.
