I'll never forget my grandfather pulling up to my middle school carpool line BLASTING this song! His whole Cadillac was vibrating lol! Rest in peace Brad Matthew Baker Jr. I miss you Papa!
I would've been about 4 or 5 when this came out. It wasn't played on commercial radio over here in England, so it's not a childhood memory (but so much crap pop is, lol!) Luckily, GC was getting sampled *extensively* when I was a young 90's hip hop head and it made me find out the original tracks - like this one! Ice Cube and Dr Dre (and a load of others, of course) jacked *so many* of his riddims! This must've blown the spot at clubs when it first came out! Luckily, I saw him around '96 in England at a festival (The Essential Weekender). He (and his line up at that time) smashed it. He was crazy as ever on stage! A true pioneer and original. And a genius. That term gets thrown around too lightly, but he was. So influential!
I didn't have black parents, nor am I black, but growing up in Canada in the 70's, I was the ONLY white kid in my family, let alone neighbourhood/town, who would sit for hours waiting for Soul Train to come on the television!! While everyone was listening to Led Zeppelin, Blood Sweat & Tears, David Bowie, Pink Floyd and our Canadian guru, Neil Young, I was mesmerized by Soul train - the dancing, the music and talent. I tried so damn hard to imitate the dancers - while my parents and sisters' looked at me like 'what is she doing'? When George Clinton came out with Atomic Dog, I was blown away and thought it the funkiest tune ever. To this day, every time I hear that song, every bone in my body is jiving to that tune.
my dad was a dj back in the day and when he plays at our family parties this is still always a must play. So easy to picture him dancing to it, fantastic song. Its his ringtone to this day hahaha
This song was actually made in mistake. George thought they were recording with out him. So he jumped in the booth and the sound engineer had started rewinding the track and George couldn’t tell what key it was in, so he just started to play it off like he knew what was happening and started talking and singing.
Heavy crack/cocaine use era George Clinton led to some of the most innovative music in American history. Shit like this seriously makes me so proud to be an American. We have the best culture. George is alive and kicking and he was the oldest member of the original P-Funk guys. It blows my mind. Dude was born in the 1941 and is still touring being awesome and making music with everyone who will work with him. A true American hero. He invented an entire movement that doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. Parliament/funkadelic was the greatest American band of all time with the greatest collection of instrumentalists. Just a force of nature
Well put comment @joshb8976. I remember reading a Rolling Stone article about George Clinton back in the 2010s. *One of the things that he said in that article that has stuck with me was that he was around so many people in his lifetime who did no drugs, who did way less drugs, or just lived much healthier than than he did and they're dead.* There are just some people whose bodies, immune systems, and etc. that have a higher tolerance for drugs than others. Some people's bodies aren't made to take a lot of drugs and then 𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒍𝒍 be living into their 80s like Clinton (he's 82 now).
My deceased sister used to love this song and dance to it. This song just came to my mind and it reminded me of my sister. I miss her so much rip trinita Lynn Agnew . I like this song.
There's no doubt those of us in our 50's were around for the best.. late 60's 70's 80's and early 90's was the best music of all time.. From Motown to Classic rock. The Temptation to Led Zeppelin..
I was obsessed with this video as a child and now marvel as an adult at the genius of the video concept. This song and the video are one of the most creative of the early to mid 80s!
No actually he was tweaking out from smoking crack and came into the recording studio and was paranoid that everyone was recording without him. So he went into the booth high as hell and they started to rewind the tape but george had no idea what was going on. like the track was all backwards and Skipping so to show them he knew what was going on he just started talking and that's how this song came about.
I met George Clinton and his beautiful wife, he is hands down the most gracious down to earth person, I was his waitress several times, Hes awesome. come back to riverside café, I miss y'all
In 1982, I was the token white guy at a radio station called WDAO. Unofficially, it meant "White Days Are Over". But no one but our dj "Dizzy" took that seriously. We were all about the breakout of R&B in the mainstream of music, most noticeably, the introduction of disco in middle America. The station thought it'd be awesome if I, a very thin white guy with a long pony tail, would announce the most awesome group of the genre at the concert at Hara Arena. So, after the Sun City Devils performed their warm up, I walked onstage in bib overalls and a thermal long sleeved t-shirt wearing my old work boots to announce George Clinton. You could have heard a cricket fart in the back of the arena. It took only six seconds for my intro to make the 4,000 fans in the arena to realize I wasn't just some uptight black guy they heard every night from 10 to 6. They realized that some skinny Caucasian guy really knew what R&B really meant at the time and that music of the time went across cultures. George and his crew treated me like everyone else, and I learned that we had a lot more in common than skin color. We shared a love of music. The next 3 days were a blur, George had included me in his entourage. As a young man with a chip on my shoulder, I was humbled by the experience. At my age, I often laugh at the images in my scrapbook. But I can still feel the connection that one thin, white rock and roller shared with an R&B legend.
+oldsarge101 I liked your long story and found it interesting. I am a true music lover and thought I'd share that in my life, R&B always had a place. I grew up listening to AFRTS radio, went to a DoD school from 8th grade up and came from two parents who loved music and gave me my love for it. I think meeting George Clinton would have be wonderful but not the path I have walked. My music taste varies from all types, my music collection is huge. I love to pull up videos for some of the songs I that I enjoy, depending on my mood. If you are open to something different with an interesting references to so many icons, I would suggest Rage Against the Machine's "Renegades of Funk." If you want some of what I loved as a high school student, I love Sly and the Family Stone's "Stand" or "If You Want Me to Stay" or Joan Jett's cover of their "Everyday People" as well as their own. I also love Cream's cover of Robert Johnson's "Crossroads." I also love many others, my taste varies to all types as I previously said.
im half brown...my mom is a white lady...people trip all the time..on myit beautiful skin tone..& my beautiful funkyness...its all right. ; really good too. let love loght yhe way to a special highway.
Hearing the back story on the creation of this timeless classic makes it - that much more special. That sound of the track dragging is actually a mistake made by George being so high on drugs - that he started singing over a rewinding tape. He kept going with the lyrics and Walla‼️ Atomic Dog was born. Fax‼️
I loved the song since I was a kid and I still love it today there should be more singers coming up with good songs like this but I know that is hard today with people only wanting to listen to the music that is popular now but I will still love it the song is awesome and it "ROCKS"!!!!
This song and this video was so ahead of its time. I remember seeing this video as kid and watching in amazement because i'd never seen anything like this before.
Watching almost got away with it, on AHC Some sean Sally dude responsible for the canarey deli masacre in brooklyn he was a groupie or somthin for George Clinton, I immediately said Atomic Dog! george clinton? And came here, too bad he had to affiliate George Clinton with that horrific senseless robbery RIP to the three victims
Still remember my first time hearing this song at a cousin’s wedding in 2002 when I was 13. This song had everyone on the floor even my grandparents who were in their 70’s at that time!
I'm glad I got to meet and work with George. Great guy and a very talented producer/musician. He will forever be the Father of Funkadelic Music, up to and after he departs this small ship known as Earth.
Saw George Clinton, Funkadelic/Parliament in concert in Knoxville, TN about 5 yrs ago. Brought back many memories from high school. My white friends thought I was crazy when I played this, my black friends already knew I was crazy. George said he was 72 yrs old and hasn't been high for 2 yrs. Gotta clean up eventually!
This was my growing up music, we were mesmerized by George Clinton and the music of the Fundadelic. The 70s and 80s was the best in music r&b, soul, rock, it down matter. People made music they loved, not music that just made money. Ojays, Stylistics, I could go on; these artists told stories, they didn't ramble up about Gucc?$%$$$.
Lol, I knew right away but I'm an 80s baby, even my mom was surprised to hear Snoop sampling her old funk jam, she thought it was so cool. Wish I had been born 20 yrs earlier, so I could've experienced that era, before certain genres started "sampling a sample thats already been sampled" sure we can enjoy it on RU-vid but to actually be there during that time is something that cannot be captured unless you were there...
@@paigeboyd I'm a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and I've been to the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc Conclave in the past. Hope to stop by another one in the near future. lol
We all knew He meant chasing the tang, but back then there was thought, subtlety and class and didn't have be vulgar to get Your point across. Good times, good times.
Happy 78th Birthday, on July 22, 2019, to the Funkmaster himself, George Clinton!!! This Song, "Atomic Dog," has one of the BEST beats that I have ever heard!!!!😎 This Song, makes you want to Dance, even if you are not in the mood!!! I remember, when this Song came out, and I LOVE it just as much TODAY, as I did when it came out!!!😍 If it were released today, it would go to #1 on the Charts!!! I keep listening to it, over and over Again!!! AWESOME Song......long live ATOMIC DOG!!!!!🤗🐶🐕
Summer 1983 George Vanier HS , Don Mills and Finch in North York . Outdoor block party, Sunshine Sound Crew , first time I heard this song , crowd went crazy. This is one of the all time great funk tunes. Brings back great memories. Kudos Mr.Clinton !!
There is NOTHING even close to this song right now. While you look, I will be enjoying dancing Yeah, this is a story of a famous dog. Bow-wow-wow-yippie-yo-yippie-yeah.
It’s 15 year old white boy. But I love so many Black artists that have been so important in music. I mean, come on, Bob Marley, George Clinton, 2Pac, John Coltrane, B.B. King, Ice Cube so many many others. Love them so much Peace ☮️ ✌️ ❤️💛💚
It’s incredible that this song was made by mistake !! CLASSIC ! It was being being rewind and he just jump into the booth and start FREESTYLING 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯💯💪🏾💪🏾
Coming from a white boy. The lady and I used to rock to this all the time at the club when we went out to have a good time. One of my favorite songs to dance to ever. Set the tone for the night. Didn't have to chase that cat far. Just a white boy that likes to rock 🪨.
+Robert Still despite growing up in a house mainly with awesome classic rock and metal. early funk and hip hop I listen to with my dad a lot. it definitely is Better than most modern hip hop, at least to me and my friends
Ive Known about this song since i was a kid but yeah D Smoke brought me back here. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ka8tlW2ZQJY.html when the kids pull up - full song
I definitely remember this song back in day. This was most definitely my one and only jam. No matter how old that I am 2 this very day I still this song and the video. 2022 who still listen to old school music? This was one coolest video and the song itself!!!
Pulled from George Clinton’s 1982 album Computer Games, ‘Atomic Dog’ did indeed reach no.1 on the U.S. R&B chart, but failed to even crack the top 100 on the pop charts. It was the product of studio trickery and a typically loopy flow from Clinton himself, who told NPR in 2006 that he “just had the word ‘dog,’” and “had to ad lib a lot of it.” This ad lib led to the immortal “Bow wow wow yippy yo yippy yay,” which was described in court in 2009 as being “in terms of iconography, perhaps the functional equivalent of ‘E.T. phone home.” It’s the most sampled cut in the entire P-Funk catalogue, and even though the song itself didn’t go gold, Capitol later told Clinton that ‘Atomic Dog’ “has since helped a lot of artists go platinum.” We’re thinking Snoop might owe him a few sips of Gin ‘n Juice. Heard in: Herbie Hancock, ‘Vibe Alive’ (1988) Ice Cube, ‘My Summer Vacation’ (1991) Snoop Dogg, ‘Who Am I? (What’s My Name)?’ (1993) 2Pac, ‘Holler If Ya Hear Me’ (1993) New Kids on the Block, ‘Dirty Dawg’ (1993) [www.factmag.com/2014/02/04/sample-the-funk-10-legendary-samples-and-the-stories-behind-them/11/]
