I love this piece so much! It begins so simply and sweetly, like a shy young man inviting a pretty girl to dance. Then little by little it becomes more passionate until the whole village is dancing in a Dionysiac frenzy! It was a joy to watch the conductor dancing in his own Dionysiac frenzy, and the musicians keeping up magnificently.
@@hb1338 Brahms did something like that, too, with the Academic Festival Overture, didn't he? Solemn, serious beginning, but as soon as the students at the ceremony recognized that first melody they would have been rolling in the aisles! And again, an energetic finish with "Gaudeamus Igitur!"
Judging by the way you spelled Romanian I tend to think you're Hungarian. If so, I must say that the Hungarian Rhapsody is absolutely brilliant. Kind regards from Romania anyway dear music lover.
The viola is the Rumanian National Folk Instrument. Notice how Enescu gave the Principal Violist this beautiful solo. Enescu's viola solo is often used by major orchestras as an audition excerpt, so many violists learn it at their university music school.
Absolute genius. You can tell that he was young when he made this piece by the youthful exuberance in certain parts. It's playful, even boisterous at times. Almost like he was trying to make it more difficult just to tease those musicians who attempted to play it.
What a pretty piece! I only looked it up because the composer was in the New York Times crossword puzzle. Wow, can’t believe I missed this all my life.
Just played this at TMEA Region Orchestra with Professor Jacob Harrison (who, by the way, is an amazing conductor) and I must say it was one of the most enjoyable experiences in my life. Not only were the people amazing, but the piece is so much fun to play and sounds absolutely divine. Enescu created a true masterpiece, and I consider myself lucky to have been able to play it with an amazing group of people.
They played it at all-state too, are you in the region that plays the philharmonic Orchestra’s piece every year? Also did Dr Rocha conduct, because he teaches in my city.
I want to bring these people to Australia! Cooking up an idea for a Festival of Romanian Music here in the Land of Oz! Support is growing for the idea!
Wish I could have been alive and met George Enescu. Also sorry I never visited Romania whenever. This Rhapsody is my favorite classical orchestrated symphony, & a tribute to my one Romanian lover, Gabriel Regalia, who died much too young.
Maybe an error from my iPAD. -Enescu’s Rumanian Rhapsody no 1 is one of my favorite musical pieces. I was borne in CUBA almost 81 years ago. Now living in THE USA.🇺🇸 THANK YOU 🙏
@@renefguidijr.631 A simple copy-paste into DeepL could solve the issue. "Romanian Rhapsody... represents everything that is traditional Romanian, from the hamlet, village, commune...to the city, all of Romania. I listened to it 30 years ago on Radio Romania Cultural. It's unforgettable and represents country life in Romania for me."
I just had my first experience meeting a Romanian lady and asked her about leading classical music composers from Romania (knowing as I did, very little). She suggested this very piece and I must say I was thrilled by every aspect of this presentation, from the exciting beauty of the piece, and the joyful enthusiasm of the entire orchestra. Very uplifting!
I'm 73 and I remember this piece from way back, around 10. I marvelled at it then and I still do. How could Enescu have so many changes in the piece and yet make it an enduring one that will be around for a long time to come. A very positive and lively piece of music. Bravo to the orchestra and conductor.
Enescu didn't compose in a void. His work is to a large extent inspired by Romanian folk music. Romanian culture - music included - gathered lots of influences from many cultures it came into (most often brutal) contact with, but had about a thousand years to properly integrate and harmonize them - that's what Enescu built on.
I am Romanian and whenever I feel homesick I listen to this because it takes me back home from one. corner of the country to the other. Enescu basically put together sounds and rithms from different regions, blending them marvelously!
@Virgilius Calafindescu-Pelasgos - Asa e !!
You know what it’s true about this Romanian Rhapsody? It’s a form of rapture. .George Enescu must have been the most talented and sensational composer of his generation. Absolutely a phenomenon!❤️❤️❤️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
This is one of my favourite pieces of music. When I first heard it I just stopped, listened and thought Oh my Lord where has this come from. You have put Romania on the map with this one Mr. Enescu.!
F-A-N-T-A-S-T-I-C ! As half-Rumanian myself, I cannot but be deeply moved by this music and performance. And my father can be found here on RU-vid playing the original version for piano.
Very soft and sentimental like Enescu himself. In fact Enescu's works are very much respected and cherished in Turkey also. So thanks and congratulations for sharing this piece.
I was introduced to this beautiful composition in my infancy, I am now 67. This and a lot of great works sre the standard by which I compare ALL music that enters into the realm of my interest. My gratitude to my parents for the exposure to wonderful music as well as the other arts.
If there's a piece of music that is truly representative to the Romanian culture, then this is it. It's absolutely beautiful. And you don't get bored at all because you simply don't know what the next part will sound like. Well, you do know if you know the piece. :d
If this doesn't SMASH, and CRASH at your soul, then you're made of STONE. I've heard this, since the 1970s when I was about 20 years old. Even then, this rhapsody is HARD to conduct and keep up with it.
"Mom, the pressure cooker blew it's lid again and there's cabbage and pot roast all over the kitchen!" "Dang it George!!! I told you NOT to play that piece when I was cooking DINNER!!!"
As it's getting on toward autumn, and I've just been watching a cozy video about Ukrainian homemaking and cooking, I was in the mood to hear Romanian Rhapsody 1. I've loved this piece since I heard it in elementary school back in the 1960's. The piece is so evocative of a sunny autumn day at first, then I think of sunset and wild celebration. Just loved hearing it again!
The dance tune that starts at 6 min. beats all the dances in the classical repertoire including Tchaikovsky's Chinese Dance in the Nutcracker Ballet, De Falla's Ritual Dance (of Fire) in El Amor Brujo, Khatchaturian's Sabre Dance in the Gayne Ballet, and Anitra's Dance in Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite. A masterpiece really.
I just saw Oscar Lavant play Sabre dance tonight in a movie on TCM. It was not announced but I recognized it since I was five years old just like this piece and I love all those pieces you mentioned since I was a kid!
@@cre8lite11 Learn how to spell names. His name is Levant. Haven't you ever heard of the Levant? Look it up. I swear, the idiots who chime in to these blogs are appallingly ignorant.
Excuse me,I have something to say about this! This music is a brilliant adaptation of romanian folklore music into clasical music by the greatest romanian composer George Enesco. He is not so much known as he deserves but for anglo-saxon listeners I have to say that he was the teacher and master of Sir Yehudi Menuhin.Read something written by Menuhin about Enesco
Thank you Maestro Mariss Jansons and the Berliner Philharmonic Orchestra for this wonderful interpretation! Is by far, the best non-Romanian one! Understanding the feelings of other nation in music, it's artistry!
One of my favorite pieces EVER! Love how it builds slowly to the unmatched, driving exuberance later on...with those "dat-dat-dat-dat" lines in the brass and the swirling strings...I have to just MOVE every time I hear it. Thank you, George!!!
13 dislikes??! Seriously? Mariss Jansons did a great job capturing the mood of Enescu´s rhapsody: the sorrow, the drama, the joyful burst of energy! As a Romanian, I say Well done Maestro! Well done!
I loved this piece of music since I heard it on the radio in 1977 when I was 19. The music uses Hora as the rhythm to reflect the strong Romanian folk music style. When the famous folk music “Skylark” appear as the climax of the music which feeling very exciting.❤🎉
Simt ca plutesc , imi aduce atata bucurie in suflet aceasta compunere splendida , a marelui compazitor roman George Enescu ! Laudat sa fie Isus Hristos Dumnezeu Adevarat !
One more great work that I heard from birth, a favorite of my parents. A beautiful rollicking tempo, playful composition. I have on greatest authority that this is great love- making music and rhapodie #2 is pretty amazing also!!
This has absolutely NOTHING to do with Balkans, madame! And there's only a very small part of Romania in the Balkans, which is Dobrogea, from the Eastern side! The rest of Romania is Carpathian, not Balkanic!🇷🇴
