Foreman was very quick here, from both sides. You can see him taking a few straight or short lefts from Frazier, like he's OK with not guarding against those completely. I can't see exactly how Foreman is reading Frazier's guard, but Frazier is ducking into a few here so you know Foreman is picking up something.
George admitted Joe was the only man who scared him, like he actually he did not want to fight him and did the only "tricks" he had and it worked, even though joe kept getting up and kept "smoking " Respect to both these greats and Rest in peace to the Legendary Smokin Joe Fraizer!
Joe had the heart of a lion but he lost his temper instead of clinching and holding, didnt have his timing back and big George bombed ol Smoke out. Man, 1973 was a tough year for me, my sports heroes got beat like cheap chinese gongs, Joe my favorite fighter of all time lost his champ belt in this one, then the Dolphins manhandled my Vikings later in the Super Bowl, and my Lakers lost to the Knicks!!! RIP SMokin Joe!!!
Hearing Angelo Dundee scream “STOP IT” at the top of his lungs at 6:32 and up is gut wrenching. We see these guys now and appreciate the legends that they are now 50+ years later. But think if you were in the heat of this era, nobody is a legend yet, just a bunch of strong, great, tenacious, and powerful young men. Nobody wants to see the death of a human being in a boxing ring, no matter if it was Frazier, or any regular journeyman.
same way a former light heavyweight champion was bellowing at the top of his voice for the ref to stop the carnage being inflicted by Roberto Duran on Davey Moore. It was terrible.
@@eno-dieumercassociates2933 Oh I thought Duran grinding his laces into Moore's eyes and face after initially thumbing him was acceptable practice?? I did think it was a bit odd that the only person in the crowd that the referee listened to was the Doctor that had to climb up onto the ring canvas to wave the fight off to the referee!
Gotta give Joe a lot of credit. He kept getting up every time he got knocked down. The man had huge balls! In fact the only reason the fight was stopped was because of the ref.Otherwise he would've literally died in the ring! Mad respect!
@@alimohammedabd He came out strong in the second round. He was the champion so Authur Mercante had to at least give him an opportunity to come back. It's a courtesy the ref will give the champion. After the 2nd knockdown in the second round from the double lefts that's when it was time to end it. That's when Angelo Dundee started yelling "Stop It". Frazier shouldn't have had to suffer knockdown number six but I understand why the ref didn't stop it after that first round.
Foreman reveals ali did offer him for title shot But he took more than a year break from boxing, no way he can come back without rust He can easily fight ali if he become top contender again. Thats the pount of boxing comission. But he retired after jimmy young beat him using similar tactic as ali. If jimmy young can do it, ali will beat him with more refine strategy had foreman not retired.
As if all Ali had was the rope a dope. He would’ve pulled a million moves out of his head to defeat anyone if he had to, much less beating a guy he already beat.
People let foreman off the hook with that rope a dope stuff. Ali didn’t lay on the ropes until like the 4th maybe 5th round. The first 3 rounds he stood in front of foreman and outboxed him. I don’t think foreman wouldn’t have beat Ali until 1977 and on. Anytime before that Ali wins.
No he wouldn’t have beaten Ali. Foreman was thoroughly whipped by Jimmy Young right after beating Frazier for the second time. That loss led Foreman to his first retirement.
@@Aaronthegreatestno, Foreman openly called out Tyson. Tyson ducked Foreman. Foreman’s style means he would absolutely whoop ass with Tyson no matter how old he was. Would of been another Foreman vs Frazier.
Mercante was a great referee. He had to at least give Joe an opportunity to come back. It's a courtesy the ref will give the champion. After the 2nd knockdown in the second round from the double lefts that's when it was time to end it. That's when Angelo Dundee started yelling "Stop It". Frazier shouldn't have had to suffer knockdown number six .
Frazier's punch was about as powerful as Foreman's but Foreman had a big reach advantage. Frazier was 5 ft. 11 which is relatively short for a heavyweight boxer. Foreman was 6 ft. 4 which made it difficult for Frazier to get inside to connect.
I'm no ref, but that went on wayyyy too long. Fight should have ended after round 1. Joe was out cold, then got hit so hard at 6:44 that his brain took a second to realize that the body needed to jump when it gets hit that hard.
Especially after seeing how Joes fighting style was only feeding into Foremans punching power. He was nothing but a weaving punchingbag taking serious damage.
JURO PRA VCS, EU NUNCA VI UM CARA TÃO RESISTENTE E TEIMOSO COMO FRAZER. UM ABSURDO O TANTO QUE ELE CAI E NÃO DESISTE! ELE É MASSACRADO, MAS A RECUPERAÇÃO DELE É MONSTRUOSA. ACHO QUE O FILME DO ROCK FOI FEITO EM CIMA DESSA LUTA.
@@mickmcsherry5916 No, he wasn't a know nothing, he was a highly educated Attorney. In 1986 he was asked his thoughts of Mike Tyson. With a big smile, he said "I have no thoughts at all!" "None?" Said the interviewer. Cosell said "None at all! He's a thug!" In '81 he predicted Dwight Braxton "Being all over Matthew Saad Muhammad!" And that happened also. He just had a flask of Vodka in his Lapel pocket at all times, to go with a Toupee that needed a chin strap!
Foreman didn't have a rematch with Ali, I wonder why?? Yet afterwards he fought two who had defeated Ali; Frazier & Norton, & beat them both so easily!
If Foreman didnt prove he was the real deal here he for sure proved it in his comeback. A rare talent for sure. That punching power isn't learned you're born with it.
Joe was a lot like Mike Tyson . Great when going forward but didn’t like Being put on his back foot and bullied back . I met Joe near the end of his life and he was in a wheelchair , all he talked about was how his corner stole the Ali fight from him and he’d watch that fight over and over again like he was expecting a different result . Sad to see what the end is like for some of these great men
That's a real shame. At least he beat Ali the first time around -- not many men can say they did that. Ali is a legend, but he acted disgracefully towards Frazier after Frazier supported him financially and spoke up in his favour regarding draft-dodging etc.
I Remember watching this fight live. As a life long boxing fan, I have never seen a top tier fighter fight a dumber fight than Frazier did in this one.
How true!!! Always felt that. He was spending way too much energy bobbing up and down for no reason. But again, styles wins fights. An infighter against a slugger??? This is what you get.
that top rope.,.suspiciously loose...not saying Foreman didn't fight a stupid fight, but by Ali leaning back, Foreman's punches lost half their impact by the time they landed....Foreman's corner should've told him to aim for Ali's shoulders.....not obvious, but two or three of Foreman's haymakers on Ali's shoulders would've slowed down his jab and right hand leads
This young George , is the one fighter ! that would have taken Tyson the same way . Mike would have charged him , and just got pushed back off balance by George like he did to Frazier And would have been crouched down low .. looking to come up with his short reach . He would have been in perfect range for George's uppercut .
So Funny Cosell saying "No fear in George foreman" during the stare down. Years later in interview George would be saying that he wanted to be world champion but hoped that Frazier would die first so that he didn't have to fight him and that he wanted to lose stare down because if Joe looked down first he would see Georges knees shaking. If you don't believe me then look for the documentary "Champions forever" that came out back in the late 80's when George was making his comeback. But really you had to be alive at the time to realize the shock-wave that this Foreman win sent around the boxing world. A heavyweight as devastating as Marciano being dispatched with ease in two rounds was something never encountered even back in the days of Sony Liston who although walking through the top ten like no other like him before or since, never beat up an all time elite champion and all time great the stature of a Joe Frazier who at the time was not only undefeated but the only fighter to have beaten Ali. Ali's chances of beating Foreman according to the experts and bookies of the time after this display were identical to his chances vs Liston him being an 8 to 1 underdog. At least here in the UK.
The WBC normally had the three knockdown rule for their fights but it was waived for this fight. With it, the ref would have stopped the fight in the first round after the third knockdown.
As it looks George Foreman punches are the strongest. It is not a good strategy to bear those punches unlike Rumble in the Jungle when Ali won. Because Ali made Foreman tired.
Yeah I was in 7th grade, and my Mom sadly told me the next morning that Joe got knocked down 6 times in the first two rounds before the fight was stopped. Then when I was folding my L.A. Herald -Examiner newspapers for my paper route; I saw all the pictures. We were devastated.
George Foreman... He was super talented fighter. More talented than Roy Jones, Duran. He entered a boxing gym at 17 and 2 years later, He became a gold medalist.
You debunked your own nonsense. That he won a gold medal with 2 years of boxing under his belt tells you his gift was physical. Both Jones and Duran are ranked higher all time, both P4p and in their respective decisions (check boxrec, where sportswriters don't get to chickenhead the rankings). George was the most feared heavyweight during the golden era of heavyweights, that's something. But it never had much to do with talent, as Ali proved in 8 masterful, one-sided rounds.
@@user-of9qq6op5udepends on how you define talent. Natural ability can be argued to be a kind of talent. One of the definitions is, "the natural endowments of a person". Yeah it feels a bit unfair that genetics & environment can trump someone who works harder, but that's life.
This is an indicator of how much Joe lacked technique and boxing intelligence. Foreman is an ordinary puncher. Apart from brute force, there was nothing special about him, as Ali proved.
Obviously you have never stepped in a ring. Foreman is the one of the hardest punchers of all time if not the hardest. Holyfield said the hardest he ever got hit was an old George foreman not mike Tyson. George also had a high ring IQ and learned from one of the smartest fighters of all time Archie Moore. Also was the sparring partner of the most scarry fighter and an all time great champion sonny Liston.
Joe just couldn't get inside against the bigger and stronger Foreman. Any time he tried, George would just push him away. The last thing anyone wanted to do against Foreman was stand in front of him at long range.
You’re right about the pushing by Foreman - the ref didn’t say boo until the start of the second round when he appeared to warn Foreman for shoving, but by then it was already too late for Joe. And of course that annoying windbag Howard Cosell didn’t know what he was looking at, so he didn’t say a word, either. However, in the final analysis, Foreman was going to finish Joe anyway, it was just a matter of time (IMHO).
