I think it's a disservice to say Foreman "wasn't a good boxer" Nothing could be further from the truth. He was a highly intelligent fighter who used some unconventional techniques (pushing, hand control, clinching) to overwhelm his opponents. And had a very underrated jab as well.

@@kevtn8 Foreman could hit hard and he had some very basic boxing skills. But since he hadn't gone the distance too many times (or had never), he was definitely going to have a hard time with Ali, who went the distance quite a few times. Big punching power like Foreman has can be a double edged sword. It's not a mystery at all, just watch the fights and you can see why. Ali gave Foreman a total lesson in boxing. Foreman beat people by overpowering them and knocking them out and no one could do that to Ali. Foreman was very lucky he never fought an Ali of the 60's, the same guy who made Liston look like a clown, and Liston would back Foreman up during their sparing. Norton and Frazier were Ali's counters in more ways than one so it was different with them.

In hindsight it seems strange that there was never a Foreman-Holmes fight even though they were exactly the same age. It would have been a classic, George trying to walk though a tsunami of nasty jabs to get to his guy, Larry trying to wear him down before he could.
@nsr60ster85

This fight was scheduled once...in 1999. Foreman retired just before Holmes truly hit his stride, and the stars never quite lined up. Sadly, we'll never know who would have won...in the '70's or the '90's.

@57highland

@@atheistleopard7671 One of the reasons that Ali beat Foreman was the constant left jab. Plus Ali was equal to Foreman in height and reach and far superior to Foreman in speed and boxing skill. @tloustrats
@tloustrats Месяц назад
Unfortunately Larry turned pro to late (mid 1973). Larry started to be a serious contender by 1977 when George was retired, Joe too & Ali starting to slow down a lot. However, based on troubles Shavers gave to Larry, I don't see Larry winning. In his prime years, I don't recall a fight where an opponent got knockdown by Foreman and survived more than 5 rounds after this knockdown. If Foreman managed to knockdown Larry early, he would have capitalized exactly as he did in this fight with Norton. For me Larry was too conventional to beat this version of Foreman who was cutting the ring too well.

The issue of Norton/Frazier is that they can't go inside with Foreman. They fear his strong punch. Since their Technics are limited to fighting inside only they loose their style against Foreman. @hammer44head
@hammer44head 3 месяца назад
@@hbnet309 -Joe had no choice but to go inside against George, he was shorter and so was his reach, not only that but it was the only way he knew how to fight was to blaze away inside, Joes fearlessness is what got him crushed in the 1st fight. Ken on the other hand had no reason to go inside and trade with George, his height and reach were virtually the same as George, plus i think Ken was a bit faster, but Nortons fight was to counter George's punches which he was doing to some degree till he left his head lingering and open and George caught him with a solid shot. Then we know what happens when george connects he keeps connecting unless you can clinch and hold him like Ali did, Norton couldnt keep him off him and Joe didnt bother as he lost his temper and started firing and missing with his timing way off from the effects of Georges bombs.

I think your analysis is highly biased. You have to consider the context over Norton loss against Shavers and Cooney. After his loss to Larry, Ken admitted himself that he had nothing left for boxing. In other words, his motivation was gone. This is the most dangerous thing for a boxer. He was also starting to age. Let's recall he was 36 in his fight against Holmes back in June 1978. He was 37 against Shavers who was probably in the best year of his career. A 1976 or before Norton would have won easily against Shavers however. Next against Cooney, he was almost 40. Absolutely no conclusion can be taken from this fight. It's like saying 'Marciano knocked out Joe Louis so Joe Louis has problems against swarmers'. This just makes no sense. Not to mention Norton did beat some sluggers back in the days. That night in Venezuela he was just facing one of the heaviest puncher in boxing history.

Right, Norton was clearly knocked down but the ropes prevented him from hitting the canvas. No excuse for the ref not giving him a count. You would think that the ref in a world championship fight would be at least somewhat competent.

Ken Norton was a heck of a fighter. Scoring a win over Muhammad Ali is pretty good. Once Forman got the fists going he was almost unstoppable. That right hand is unbelievable.

You can see why Ali never gave Big George a second chance. Ali's strategy was beautiful in the jungle bout, but no way was George going to fall for anything like that again. You can see in this Norton fight how George normally was much headier than he would be seven months later in Kinshasa. He simply let Ali get under his skin. Had he fought Ali in October the way he fought Norton the previous March, that fight might have gone a lot differently. Big George was a much smarter fighter than he is given credit for being by many.
@57highland
@57highland 2 месяца назад
Foreman didn't lose to Ali because he (Foreman) was not smart. He lost because Ali is fast and accurate with his punches and because he (Foreman) absolutely hated getting punched in the face, a problem against Ali because Ali would hit you a lot in the face. Foreman had never been hit in the face as many times as he was versus Ali. It took the heart out of him, getting his face tattooed so repeatedly.

You're daydreaming if you think Ali won't get the same result in the rematch. All you need to do is go watch Foreman / Young fight. At worse that was how Ali rematch would have gone. I think Ali would have taken Foreman out sooner. His ring IQ is on another level.
@tloustrats
@tloustrats Месяц назад
@@kevtn8with no holding behind the neck and no loose ropes I can tell it would have gone differently. Plus if we talk realistically, Foreman would have fought Ali late 1977. Three months later Ali lost against an unknown LHW... Let's be honest this would have been a beating

Both Frazier and Norton were trained by Eddie Futch. The cross guard was ideal for countering boxers like Ali but power hitters like Foreman just blasted through it. It’s instructive that Jimmy Ellis (a lesser boxer than Norton or Frazier) beat Foreman by frustrating and wearing him down.

I can tell you that "they" tried to rig this fight for a Norton Win. Norton even had a 16 second count and still couldn't carry on. Foreman said before he fought Norton, that whilst in his hotel room his body was a absolute mess and he couldn't even stand up 8 hours before the fight (as you can guess, this fight was in Venezuela???) Yet even doped up, Foreman still did this to him... LOL.
