For me the outstanding voice here is Sherezade Panthaki, I was most impressed and want to hear her more.

Jennens' Ode borrowing from Milton's better known "L'allegro" and "Il Penseroso" adds Moderation to the mix liking neither the excesses of Milton's Mirth nor Contemplation. Handel adds humor and beauty to the entire enterprise. He also produces one of his most sublime and beautiful pieces in #45. This is, in my opinion, one of the most wonderful pieces of vocal music ever composed. It is a most satisfying blend of text and music to define the hope of the Age of Enlightenment. One could only wish that such a sentiment would be reborn in the 21st century.

(1:11:22) "Me, when the sun begins to fling" followed by the aria "Hide me from the garish eye" is the most beautiful melody ever composed by Haendel. The lyrics are sublime too.

This brilliant,polished rendition must be one of the best available. This work is not one of my personal favourites as I have always felt that,somehow,Handel was left-"struggling"- with the extremely long lines of text in this poem. But,my personal view of this work does not detract from the excellence of this performance.

Does anyone know who that flautist is? I checked the Harvard Baroque Ensemble but their core group is only strings and continuo. A guest player, possibly?

Forsythe is utterly delightful in every way. The other soprano is quite shrill and must be a last minute replacement.

To put Milton's wonderful words to music and add words of your own about an in-between man has always seemed to me as project too far. Although I love Handel's music ,I would suggest that as I did at school 60 years ago ,just read the poems.Their rhythms and scanning , said , not sung, are so much better than being set to music,however good.This quality of poetry should not be set to music.

If I remember correctly the sinfonia sounds like Handel's concerto Grosso, or are they his Concerto Grossos?
