When the President, in a speech to religious broadcasters, took a swipe at Simpson family values, comparing them unfavorably to the close-knit Great Depression-era Waltons of 80s TV, Simpsons writers immediately incorporated the critique into an episode, 8-year-old Bart offering commentary on the weak Bush economy. A short time later, "Simpsons" co-creator James Brooks introduced himself to First Lady Barbara Bush in a receiving line and was met with "a drop-dead, withering cold look", and the feud between the Bush and Simpson families continued. A subsequent Simpsons episode found former President Bush retired and residing in a house across the street from the Simpsons. Bart made himself at home in his new neighbors' garage, where the former President was writing his memoirs.
