I love the contrast between the passion radiation from George and the absolute, utter monotony of Lex's voice : two brilliant minds with seemingly opposite temperaments...
I like that Lex is not intimidated by this guy. He calls him on his overstatements. His interviewing style and knowledge of the subject makes this an incredibly interesting conversation.
I really did like the straight -forwardness of the conversation and how these two guys displayed their contrast about some topics, without any hesitation. Really pleasant and sophisticated video, that makes any AI guy who dreams a fully autonomous vehicle future to reconsider about the structure of their system.
If I was an actor and I have to base a genius villain character on someone alive, I would definitely base it on George's mannerisms, speech and general demeanor
@@jacobvanveit3437 - What made me consider it at first were his speech mannerisms... and then zooming out to him in general, some of his talks, his 12 hour coding sessions with incredible speed and focus, etc... Just google the symptoms and observe him a little bit. And also, get out of your head that peple with asperger have to be clumsy or dysfunctional. There are many types and levels of that syndrome. Btw, there are many successful/famous people that are known to be affected by it.
Ix Px sorry I was just curious why you have this assessment. I in no way was judging your assessments, I was just trying to point out that he’s not demonstrating the typical habits. I don’t discount you’re assessment I just felt like your statement needed a bit of clarification and pointing to why. I agree that he’s very gifted in his abilities but it’s also clear his ego is very high and his empathy is fairly low. I’m with you that he may have Aspergers, but he also exhibits opiate use. He’s stated that he’s used Kratom before and also has had a nervous breakdown. I’m somewhat inclined to not rule out drug use but I also have not seen a 12 hour stream of him coding non stop.
@@jacobvanveit3437 - No problem, and thank you for being this considerate. It's so rare in this day and age that i was a bit surprised, honestly ! ;-) Yes, the high ego, complete disregard for the opinions of others and low empathy are also things that i saw but did not mention in my previous post. He's one of those aspergers that definitely get certain advantages from it, in his scientific field. But on a human level, it's easy to see/feel that things are missing. For instance, sometimes, during his talks, he tries to have deeper considerations about our reality, the meaning of life, etc... where he basically tries to bring it all back to his niche. He deals with what he has, and since he's cut off from some basic human characteristics, he only ends up with his typical scientific intellectualization.
Great interview, great combi to have Lex interview George. George is not only very knowledgable and creative but also great in how open and honest he is. Assisted by Lex he was able to share how he reduced the problem to it essentials and by that he shared many years worth of thinking, analyzing and experimenting in this domain. All for free ! For anybody involved in driver assistance, autonomous driving or even just in management in the car industry this is a MUST watch interview. Well spend 2 hours, thank you both George and Lex !
I think this is one of the most instructive and thought-provoking interviews you've done thus far. I understand the need to find the idyllised machine that will enable constant learning at the equilibrium state. Although of course the idyllised 'machine' is the unsocialised or pre-socialised self that we know we don't yet know well enough.
kind of. I still think people have familiarity biases, and if one particular company gets established first, some people will chose them based on brand recognition alone.
"If I sell out to like make money. I sold out. It doesn't matter. What do I get? A yacht? I don't want a yacht." - George Hotz This made me giggle so much. What an interesting young gentleman. It is not a stretch to share that George's passion for what interests him is infectious. I can see why Lex left George's Twitch stream on in the background while programming.
There was a press conference for Comma AI where George mentioned something like "hello yachts" when referring to the near future of his company, or perhaps the potential in investing in it.
Great quote: My MTP is Transforming telecommunication and transportation to create sustainable, salubrious & profitable business with zero fatalities, zero congestion & net zero carbon footprint. The 5th generation of transportation will be CASE (Connected, Automated, Shared and Electric Vehicles) but I think even more transformative will be 6th G - Virtual transportation with VR going from “it” to “bit” to save money, time and the planet. There have been 4 Generations of transportation: 1G - Boats/Ships: The oldest boat ever found is ~10,000 years old. 2G - Trains: ~200 years 3G - Automobiles: ~130 years 4G - Planes: ~114 years Author’s Note: there is a generation 0 of transportation which is biological transportation: foot or animal transportation. Each new G of transportation has increased the use of GHG per mile. We are now going to change that trend by shifting to 2 new Gs of transportation. 5G - CASE - Connected, Automated, Shared and Electric Vehicles 6th G is Virtual transportation with VR - From “it” to “bit” to save money, time and the planet Society fundamentally changed with each new transportation generation in the past. The next 10-25 years may be more transformative with 5G CASE and 6G VR than the last 4Gs of transportation. Today, transportation uses 25% of the World Energy resources and generates 27% of US greenhouse gases. If we are going to solve the problem of excess GHG, we are going to have to change the way people travel. Zeev Kirsh He's not going to sell out he's already battled and won against the US govt, demo'd the software to the Chinese govt, and Turned down an employment offer from Elon Musk in the tens of millions. He's made the software open source and has also made an insane amount of money on hackerone. He's currently writing his own programming language. He is not naive, he's a once in a life time mind.
I have seen about ten of your videos so far and this one is the top of the list for me. The discussion related to the problems of full self driving were fascinating. Thanks Lex!!!!
@@actualfactual8737 Dude, Lex does not give a Fuck about your Hate. You are just a Bitch Keyboard warrior. You don't have shit knowledge that Lex has. YOur Hates does not Mean anything dude. So, stop bitching.
@@norrow7047 Mick Jagger. Rolling Stones. They wrote the book on rock and roll attitude more or less. (Fuck you I won't play your game etc) should look the guy/band up
He’s being playfully condescending...comparing George to a rebellious rock star legend. He doesn’t understand why George is so emotionally repelled by business sales types.
Spectacular interview. George hotz has always been on another reality plain above us mere mortals.

Damn, despite looking really tired you conduct this conversation amazingly! You guys know a lot about a lot of different topics and that showed up. One of the bests in my opinion. Thank you!!
Jabrils it was really unique, they weren’t afraid to push on each other’s ideas, George is obviously super brilliant and quirky but right on the edge of where he still comes off as very eloquent. Please have him on again. Also, thanks for your cool quirky unique videos Jabrils. Internet needs more of this energy
This would have to be one of the best insights into the self-driving world coming. Thanks, Lex, great work on this interview. George, thanks for the laymen break down. Great works gents!
this man claims to have found the clock cycle and synchronization cycles....also how it relates to an information projection dimension. you guys should take a look at this....he also found a quantum computer language hidden as the the Jewish alphabet from a pre existing advanced civilization.....search "diehold foundation" they have a youtube channel. according to them this is a quantum sim with two dimensions one projector and the other projection universe.
@ModestDeity They were not talking about a *representation* of our universe per say, it was more literal. Is everything we know *a* simulation run by some thing? It's a serious possibility, if you were to think of the odds... Imagine in 3019; 'humans' have surpassed many milestones [energy, disease, ageing, ai, space flight, whatever, et cetera] what could simulations be useful for and how believable could they be to the beings inside them? Then, realise how many simulations could be running simultaneously! Forget conspiracy, statistically it's more than likely.
You two are really good to listen to. Different approach but both intelligent, down to earth, insightful, enthusiastic and very open minded. Would love to hear more of you two in the future. I'm sure we will. Keep on the good work.
These guys are a blast to listen too. Just subscribed. Looking forward to more about A.I., autonomous driving. A.I. girlfriends 👀 now that's got my attention haha
I may watch this whole interview again soon. One of the best I have ever listened to. Also the lighting makes it look like it was done in the 80's and regarding the 2020's. Like an interview with Flynn from the original Tron movie.
Say what you want about George and his demeanor; this was an interesting conversation! Lex was clearly challenged during this dialogue and that made it even more enjoyable. Love the Mick Jagger comment
Don't conflate a brief reflection and measured speech with "challenged". The Hotz guy has more first hand experience because its his sole focus. So he uses specific jargon that Lex is either unfamiliar with or wants clarification for his audience. However, his systemic understanding of the business climate and the tangential factors that affect his business is wanting. Hotz is the smarter guy in the room but Lex is the wiser guy in the room and 1oz wisdom is worth a pound of knowledge.
Matt Acuff , I agree. First time for me to listen to him, but Lex is really thoughtful and is not easily swayed by the fancy or complex or intriguing idea from George. Really interesting discussion.
@@jje984 see your point and it would be amazing if he were at Tesla. I think George is trying to do the everyman version I.e. Android version, that will be able to be fitted into all cars, not just Tesla's.
@@jje984 "IF" doing a lot of work in your comment. Far from clear that this learning model is correct, particularly if the data they're collecting isn't nearly of the resolution or type required to actually execute so-called "L5", which in my view it isn't. They need next and maybe next-squared generation hardware on these vehicles, along with a standard for car-to-car communication and safety systems. They're approximating reality within their virtual world, but heavily relying on human backup to make up for the data holes in their model. It will be a long time before a "self driving" car will be able to lock eyes with a real driver at a 4-way stop and figure out who goes first. L5 automation in controlled environments - even certain metro environments - will come in a reasonable timeframe. Open environments - real world environments - hahahahaha - let's just say it will be a while before real cars are shipped without steering wheels. Closed environments basically means eliminating virtually all unstructured interaction between machines and humans. There's already a name for that environment, it's called a train system, and as long as you stay within that system, it will work just fine. I think the propagation of self-driving will pretty much be an exercise of extending these controlled environments, rather than extending real self driving capabilities.
There are these videos of Feyman which are like gold right now -- I figure if we knew, every waking moment of the mans life should have been catalogued. I'm inclined to think the same with George because 'the errors of a great mind are still more interesting than the discoveries of a mediocre mind' - this entire thing was like watching two thoroughbreds!
Not to be missed podcast brilliant... .... Any one vaguely interested in autonomous driving must watch. What an interview.... You got George to explain at a level that we mortals could just understand,, many thanjs.. Please get Musk and Hotz interviewed together on the subject of autonomous driving algorithms would be so cool 😎
AMAZING episode. Thanks so much for doing these Lex! I am not a patrion yet (to any youtube channel), but you make me storngly consider looking more into it :)
@@UnbenutzerKanalname Early 2016 is when it beat everyone, I was literally taking my first (and phenomenal and world changing) reinforcement learning class AS THEY PROVED E2E DEEP RL TO THE WORLD. It was exhilarating.
Thanks Lex for organizing this guest. Your show's format and how you are a real deal is a great match for Hotz, his mix of insane, insight, and bullshit. This was really fun and I've subbed because of it.
Thanks Lex for another amazing episode with your precious time! It made me laugh several times watching you two both 10X engineers from completely opposite spectrum of personalities having an intelligent conversation. George is definitely an incredible genius. Please also get some more sleep Lex with all your hard work! Much appreciated!
Thank you both I massively enjoyed this conversation, I was only thinking recently that L2 is all I would personally want, as I am happy to manually drive most of the time, as it can be fun and part of the game of life, and when needed turned on for the boring motorways and traffic jams. I also find it interesting as hard as your working to make self-drive work better, engineers are making the racing sims as real to life as possible.
He's adorable. I love his enthusiasm. I want to be this passionate and intelligent in tech one day ❤👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 great interview. Love your interviwing skills.
Sal1981 , I think it’s more of George is talking about a topic he has thought of a lot while Lex as the interviewer has to have a broader set of knowledge.
@@shorttravelvideos9649 Also if you notice, George has a habit of using unnecessarily rare words to describe basic things. This makes Lex often ask: What is that? And you get the impression that George is teaching Lex things, when in reality it's just him using rare words or unnecessary abbreviations.
I love this!! Good deep dive and Lex does a wonderful job at pushing back on some of George's assertions. I am beyond fascinated about AI and driving... it may be the signpost signaling when AI really takes off. I agree with George that the solution may be like Alpha Go.. a computer will start with nothing and teach itself everything it needs.
