George Hyde's First Submachine Gun: The Hyde Model 33

George Hyde was a gun designer who is due substantial credit, but whose name is rarely heard, because he did not end up with his name on an iconic firearm. Hyde was a German immigrant to the United States in 1927 who formed the Hyde Arms Company and started designing submachine guns. His first was the Model 33, which we have here today. This quickly evolved into the Model 35, which was tested by Aberdeen Proving Grounds in the summer of 1939. It was found to have a number of significant advantages over the Thompson, but also some durability problems. The problems could probably have been addressed, but Hyde (who had gone from working as shop foreman at Griffin & Howe to later becoming chief designer for GM’s Inland division during WWII) had already moved on to a better iteration. His next design was actually adopted as the M2 to replace the Thompson, but production problems caused it to be cancelled. The M3 Grease Gun was chosen instead, and Hyde had designed that as well. He was also responsible for the design of the clandestine .45 caliber Liberator pistol.
The Hyde Model 33 is a blowback submachine gun which obviously took significant influence from the Thompson - just look at the front grip, barrel ribs, controls, magazine well, and stock design. However, it was simpler, lighter, and less expensive than the Thompson. It fared better than the Thompson in military mud and dust tests, probably in part because of its unusual charging handle, a long rod mounted in the rear cap of the receiver. This was pulled rearward to cycle the bolt, a bit like the AR15 charging handle. Like the AR15, this setup eliminated the need for an open slot in the receiver. Apparently, however, the handle had a disconcerting habit of bouncing back into the face of the shooter when firing.

Tubular receiver, less damn wood... seems like a streamlined cheaper lighter version of Thompson at first glance. Something that was desperately needed.
@crazyfvck

+TheArklyte I agree. I think it's a shame that he didn't choose to develop this further. It would have saved our gov't some money, and it would have made for a lighter smg for our troops. But at least he had some successes during his career, unlike many of the gun designers that Ian showcases.

With this gun in conjunction with the ultimate design of the grease gun, I feel like Hyde was interested in creating as close to a mud-proof submachine gun as was possible. The dust cover was an integral part of the grease gun's function, and now that I'm aware of the fact that the first gun he submitted was rejected in part because of problems with the rearward charging handle, the wonky charging handle on the original M3 makes a lot more sense

I have always had a thing for Thompson look-a-likes, in fact years ago, I picked up a cheep clone with a plastic lower and what looked like surplus upper, she took standard Thompson magazines and could burn through a 30 round clip in record time, even though she was semi-auto. I really loved the little gun, and having a rifle and handgun of the same caliber was always a good thing in my mind, especially when I was a re-loader, and had plenty of time to roll my own. One day my old childhood buddy came to my house and told me he was going to take his wife and head to the mountains of Colorado to full fill our old childhood dreams of cabin life and living off the land. He had just sold his seismograph company and had a wad of cash, he made me an offer that I could not refuse, and I sold him everything but my duty gun, at the time that was some 15 combined rifles and handguns. What I did not know was that he was on the brink of insanity, and within fifteen hours I was in a nearby city trying to talk him out, he had barricaded himself and showed an officer 3 rounds of pistol ammo, he said one was for his wife, another for his other friend and one was for ME! Well I was the Chief of my small town about 13 miles from where he had set up, so they called me to try and talk him out. After nearly a full day, I talked him out, and that night, all my guns were locked in our evidence locker. I accompanied the Sheriff in transporting the fellow to the State Hospital for the Criminally Insane, and sadly I haven't seen him ever since. It made me think hard about giving up my FFL, but it took me another 12 years before I decided to go that route. His guns were released to his brother-in-law some months after the incident, I am quite sure they were returned to him on his release, after the doctors gave him some pills and pronounced him cured.

Pretty interesting. I was expecting it to be a little lighter, like 8-8.5 lbs. Good design. The foregrip/end could always have been changed. A sliding wire stock like the M3 might have been a good idea. I would expect that a slightly projecting mag well like an M3 or MP-40 is ultimately a better idea. The charging handle may have merit, but i think a side handle like the M1 Thompson might ultimately be better. Hyde's designs are interesting and solid though. I always liked the M2. Great video as always. Thank you

I think in present day, we're wont to lump old guns together based on their visual similarity. But if you think about it, it should come as no surprise that different weapons from the same era should share numerous visual cues; The same can be said of a huge number of modern black rifles today, many of which are internally quite different from each other, but simply looking at their profile would belie those differences.
