Country music today is garbage, true country music like this is priceless. Country music died in the 1980's. I grew up listening to George, Waylon, Willie, Merle, and Hank. Today's country music could never come close to the true country music of George Jones.
“George Jones’ voice was a rowdy Saturday night uproar at a back-street beer joint, the heartbroken wail of the one who wakes up to find the other side of the bed empty, the far-off lonesome whistle of the midnight train, the memories of a half-asleep old man dreaming about the good old days. . . He sang for us all, the non-stop partiers, the guys who are alone and the girl done wrong,....... George had a song for everybody.” Charlie Daniels
best song ever written, being sung by the best singer ever, and real country music at its absolute best!!!! country music is dead when it comes to radio, i wish they would stop playing that modern crap they got now, and bring back real songs like this one...
No one will ever try to fill his shoes because they know its impossible, who else breathes life into a song like George Jones ......listen to his astounding phrasing.....unique.
It goes without saying that George Jones was perhaps the best country singer ever HOWEVER, he also had backup singers and musicians who were second to none and they gave him the distinctive George Jones sound that is so easily recognizable.
MY FATHER AND I DONE SOME WORK FOR MR. GEORGE JONES WHEN HE LIVED IN VIDOR TEXAS...HE OFFERED MY DAD A PAIR ON HIS BOOTS...SIGNED.. NO LESS..I THOUGHT HE WOULD BE AROUND THE REST OF MY LIFE...LITTLE DID I KNOW,,THE GOOD LORD ABOVE WAS MAKING A PLACE FOR HIM..LONG LIVE THE POSSOM..A GREAT TEXAS IS STILL SINGING AS GOOD AS EVER.......
George was the real deal, when he sang about heartbreak, hardship, being drunk etc he actually lived it.It gave his music depth and believability sadly when the man died real country music died with him.
George Jones- You and I lived our lives together- we got drunk together more times than I can remember, we got sober together, divorced together, remarried (for the last time) together- you sang my life, I just can't imagine no more George songs a comin- but rest easy my Man, you deserve the freedom of the flesh- fly easy George-
There's something about this song I just love, even to this day... it was the third single released from "I am what I am" album. And even though it peaked at # 8 on the US Billboard charts, next to "He Stopped loving Her Today", it is one of my all time favorites of the Possum.
If drinkin' don't kill me, her memory will....shakes head and smiles....rest in peace George you are another of the last of the greats to leave this plane of existence...the world won't be the same without you around...(tis a scary place now)
I can see it now george sitting at the bar with johnny and waylon on a friday night looking down on all of us saying dont be sad be happy for the life i lived and celebrate my life and music that i made there is only one possum and now maybe he can rest in peace...

Oh, George...I wish I had seen you in a concert. I have always loved your music. RIP George, as you have brought such comfort, happiness and pleasure to millions. We love you.
good old bar song reamber my brother-law travis singing this to my big sister debbie its a shame hes dieing from drinking he haves liver cancer and brain cancer pray for him
George Jones has always been my #1 favorite singer, during our 12 yrs. of going to Destin, Fl, we were fortunate to attend 2 of his wonderful concerts. I also enjoyed meeting his wife, Nancy, the one who lasted. I will enjoy listening to all his wonderful RU-vids and always remember him with love. No one will ever fill his shoes.
@DarthMorbius1977 - I would agree, This is REAL Country! However I don't agree that it died in the 80's, because in my opinion it will NEVER die! Hank Williams died 60 years ago and we still talk about him! And when you think about it, Waylon was putting out Music until 2000, George and Merle are STILL out there singing songs, and 60 years from now they will still know who these guys were. Excellence NEVER dies!!!
A true American Country Legend has left us. He lived his life as told by his songs and damned be the critics. Rest in Peace George and I raise a glass in your honor.
There are a LOT of good country songs today. I agree, it's hard to hold a candle to George, Waylon, Willie, Merle and Hank but let's not knock the great artists we have today!
A true country classic from the incomparable George Joines - " The Rolls Royce of Country Singers"- he was known as, and my No. 1 favourite singer. Thank you.
ummmm dunno about that- my dad played George - n n Elvis n PINK FLOYD he was everywhere- Mom played Sunday Afternoon Piano music- and church was where we lived for music---- but something spoke to me in his music from a little bitty girl, singing White Lightnin when I could barely walk...much to my mama's chagrin! Later his music spoke to me while I was drinking...he sang my life- we lived vicariously "together" and in the end sobered up- and lived well...God I miss this man...Fly Easy George
