In the mid-60s, I experienced one of George Jones' no-shows. I was backstage at the music hall in Bainbridge, Ohio, where George was to perform to a sold-out house. The opening act sang song after song, and after each song, he would come backstage and ask, "Is he here yet?" Every time, the stage manager sent him back to do another song to kill time. Finally, the singer came back and said, "Is the son-of-a-bitch here yet?" They gave a refund to the unruly crowd. I'll never forget that night!
1chgrfan look up Vince Gills video for "one more last chance". One of the lyrics says "well she might have took my car keys, but she forgot about my old John Deere." The end of the video has Vince and George driving around in lawn tractors.
apparently the back story is george got busted for drugs while driving down south. i forget which state. anyways governor pardoned him if he would do 2 charity-like concerts. he didnt show up for either one. lol legend
The lyric is "everyone know's Hag's been in prison" A reference to Merle Haggard. That's completely my opinion though based totally on the fact that as far as I know none of the "hanks" have been to prison. Neither Sr or Jr, not Thompson or Snow.
that makes sense, though the lyric does sound more like Hank than Hag.. but yes of course Merle had been many years in prison, whereas the Hanks mabye did a night in jail?
My Dad as a new lawyer in the early 80's before I was born, had Merle Haggard as his 2nd or 3rd client. In a top floor conference room sits Merle, My Dad, and the Opposing Lawyer. The Opposing lawyer says "Isn't it true your best friend a one George Jones, goes by the name 'No Show Jones".".Merle takes his boots off the table and says "thems fighting words" and spits on the floor. At which point the other lawyer says to my Dad "Do you have any control over your client?" My Dad "no, no I do not."
Yep George has been home so now when I listen to this song no show Jones we can always say we don't have to see you keeping alive in our hearts and our memories we'll never have to worry about it was will never forget George Jones

The story got as to why this song was made. George Jones used to drink like a fish out of water. He was an alcoholic. Maybe he slowed down on his drinking as he got older but he use to drink a lot. He would set concert dates get drunk and not show up. Hahahahaha. He wrote this song about it.
On Independence Day, 1976, he appeared at Willie Nelson's Fourth of July Picnic in Gonzales, Texas in front of 80,000 younger, country rock oriented fans. A nervous Jones felt out of his comfort zone and nearly bolted from the festival but went on anyway and wound up stealing the show
Man needed to be alone. Just an ordinary man named Jones. That wanted to chill without meeting everyone's needz. But to nice to say no. And and enough blow to not go
Great song for sure! Please take a minute to look at my tribute to four of the greatest Real Country Music singers of all time Merle, George, Conway and Johnny. "Country Music Died Today"
How the hell can a man get away with a song celebrating his failure to show up for a gig yet STILL get the hard-working and reliable folks cheering him like crazy? talent, i guess?
Good song but in my opinion,it is an insult to Tammy, it was better when he did it with Merle Haggard when he said Tammy was the first lady of a country song
