You’re wrong that THX is the only other film Lucas has changed. He’s changed American Graffiti as well. Initially the studio cut a few minutes out of it that he later restored, and later again he digitally changed the sky in the opening shot.
The 4K has also been scrubbed so bad it looks worse than the DVD. The theatrical is a different beast it has the mono mix i have the bootleg. It doesn't have some enhanted evening or the funny scene with Terry and the car salesman. It also has different end credits.
It's not just "less is more", for a movie that was so incredibly visually unique, it's that "more" disassembles that unique universe. The original (or '77 cut that was eventually released to VHS) shows a world that was hermetically interior. A few larger, shopping mall-like interiors were used, but it all felt very subterranean. Much of it was famously shot in the BART subway tunnels, then under construction. The added CGI scenes of rushing cars on multi-storey freeways, with what look like exterior apartment structures in the background appear more like a Blade Runner set than the more antiseptic maze of corridors and tunnels of THX. It's a quiet story, so every loud intrusion of flashy visuals shuts the mood down. 10:41 is a perfect example of a set piece that doesn't match the original film at all. That's not even late '60s / early '70s architecture or futurism, it just looks like every airport from the 2000s and up! If anything, he should've spliced back in any weird shit that Zoetrope removed, even before Hollywood did! This is my absolute favorite cinematography of Lucas' career, and if I were him, I would highlight the psychedelic and abstract aspects of THX, from the era in which it was made, rather than shoe-horn in "modern" effects, that have dated much faster than the original materials. You can't make this modern, so make it WEIRDER!
Yes, lucas has the right to make changes to his films. But he does NOT have the right to destroy history. The original cuts should be available in the same package as his "updates." Luckily, we have fans like Team Negative1 and Harmy to preserve the originals.

The team has decided to only do the original cuts of the trilogy, the 1997 edits and the prequels. Because they don't want the mouse to come down on them. Preserving lost theatrical releases only for Star Wars. They archived their Indiana Jones prints because of the official 4K releases. The James Bond stuff is similarly gone into a hole or stashed somewhere. They have no intention of doing America Graffiti or THX 1138. The Italian IB tech of THX was scanned years ago and shared with few. The 480P Graffiti bootleg telecine was shared until it was deleted from the internet, lucky i downloaded it. I have been asked to not share it, its on Myspleen. I have LIteMakr Raiders 35mm also not allowed to share. I did ask for the work in progress directors cut of 1978 THX 1138 with laserdisc footage married to the IB tech scan while they waited for Poita, i never got a reply. I did find this in standard def somewhere and not HD but why in gods name would you scan an IB tech in HD and only upload it in laserdisc quality.
Factoid: The license number of the lead car in “American Graffiti” is THX 138. That is historically accurate as well because California license plates in 1962 used the ABC 123 numbering format.
THX is aGODDAMN masterpiece. The changes are FANTASTIC. No they do NOT compare to the SE. The updated effects in SE are great. But changing character voices, jabba, greedo, they all detract from the original that was FAR superior. The changes in THX are there to enhance the world. They add a visual richness that Lucas couldn't have. I've only watched the new THX but in a side by side comparison, the new effects are relatively SEAMLESS. they REALLY Put a tremendous amount of care into blending the old with the new. A PERFECT example is the eye roll- THAT'S DIGITAL!! I love every second of this perfect film.

for me, part of the problem with putting all these high-sci-fi elements in THX (lots of crazy cars, high speed trains, and elevators) kind of takes away from the message. The original film is fucking bleak because these people live like robots, and for what? So, they can walk around, do terrible jobs making more cops, buy useless garbage, take drugs to numb their brains, and watch tv? Yes! That's the point: this awful society produces nothing good and offers nothing of value, because it is incapable of anything without human independence and creativity. It's offices, and hallways, and empty rooms.
Lucas once quoted some director in the past who said that "movies aren't finished they're abandoned"... or something like that. Problem with Lucas is that he keeps obsessively screwing around with things that any charm there once was has been vacuumed out.

When a piece of art leaves the creator's hands to the public, I think if they decide to go back and make changes to it, then they must relinquish their control of the original. Because messing with the original is to destroy history in a sense, and that's never a good thing if it's just for the sake of one person's ego. That's like writing a book, deciding you didn't like something about the original book, and then rereleasing a new version of the book but burning every single copy of the original so no one can see the original again.
The jerk off machine actually fits perfectly with the setting of the film. This is a society that has stuck men and women together to live as roommates and drugged them to not feel any sexual attraction to each other, instead directing them to feel sexual pleasure by using machines. I also have no problem with him adding establishment shots that he could never have been able to afford in the original production. I think it's a strong re-edit.
The laserdisc release looks really rough too. The original never had a decent release. I even remember Gary Kurtz talking about how there weren't even good prints of it because it was low budget and a flop and the best he saw making the rounds was a 16mm reduction.
I've got a 16mm cut of the 1971 cut and the 5 mins that were "cut" may have just be been rearranged. Sequence of scenes in 16mm print: Drug evasion arrest --> LUH visits THX --> THX gets medical examinations --> Trial & “pain prods” (electro-shock batons) scene --> THX is being monitored & researched --> THX put in prison. Also has an extended bit with SEN talking to the kids.
is there a cut where we can see that extended bit? SEN talking to the kids scene is awesome (how people educate themselves in that world, by drinking knowledge - kinda goofy, but cool anyway lol), and it's a tiny bit of intelligent world building that the CGI scenes tried to enhance, but ended up just adding a hint of bockbuster flavour to a movie that is everything but that. Also, Donald Pleasance's batshit crazy and often (purposefully) annoying performance gets much quieter and personal at that moment.
As someone who saw Star Wars in the theater at release... I don't hate the SE as many fans do, but I think he overdid the CG clutter in several scenes. Popping a CG creature or Droid in the background was fine, while the creatures in the foreground and midground tended to be really distracting. CG Jabba is a necessary evil in restoring that scene and I'll even give the cameo of the over-rated Boba Fett a pass, because there's always fan service in these kinds of things. Looking at the THX footage, I think the scenes that give a bit of scale to things are acceptable when they keep the basic visual look (the train station scene looked okay), while the busier scenes kind of ruin the vibe. I think if you make anything but the most minimal changes, you probably should include both versions on the home release. Doctor Who plays with the effects of the 60s-80s and have the option to watch the original version. And, trust me, slipping CG into an old Doctor Who episode is about the most jarring change you can make.
For me, the most egregious offense was the addition of the totally random, unnecessary 'CGI monkeys' at the end of the film. Typical Lucas debasement. Sigh.
While I would prefer for the original versions of all of Lucas’s films to be available in an easily accessible format (this goes for the original cuts of the Star Wars trilogy, THX-1138, American Graffiti, the 1997 special editions, the 2004 special editions, and the original cuts of the prequel trilogy) I completely understand where George is coming from and as the artist he’s allowed to make whatever changes he wants. If it was someone else meddling with his work than I could really understand the discourse but these are George’s films and he has a right to do whatever he wants with them. His method of changing his work is also far less intense than other directors like Kubrick who would burn entire sets of film he used of his movies and cut scenes from his films when they were already in theaters. Honestly when it comes to George Lucas’s changes, I think a lot of the worst ones could be made perfect if they just had better CGI. A lot of the special edition changes are great on paper and the execution varies. But that’s just my two cents on the matter.
@@BraveBladeProductions Oh hell yeah. I don't want to come off as someone who hates George Lucas for the special editions and only wants the theatrical cuts. I grew up with both versions of the films and I was always very indifferent to a lot of the changes. In fact some didn't even register as changes to me like the new Biggs scene in ANH, the added Wampa in TESB, or Darth Vader yelling no at the end of ROTJ. I'm honestly fine with all the changes Lucas has made, and while going back and watching the original VHS tapes is interesting from a history perspective, I do still ultimately prefer the special editions for finishing Lucas's unfinished work and tying the saga together. The changes I don't particularly enjoy like the extended Mos Eisley intro and Jedi Rocks are honestly only because of the dated CGI. On paper their great changes that not only stay more in line with Lucas's original vision but also make the galaxy feel more alive than it ever did before. It just sucks though that the CGI wasn't lucky enough to age well over the past 27 years. In all honesty, the real reason I'ed like for the theatrical cuts (whichever of the dozen different prints that have different audio mixing) to be available is so all the rabid fans would stop complaining about the Special Editions. It's really irritating hearing people complain about not being able to watch "their Star Wars" over and over again. Then again that would allow a lot of the self entitled "George Lucas Raped Our Childhood" fanboys to win and that's something that I don't want to be alive to see come to fruition.
During the early months of the pandemic, there was one sequence from the original SW that I really wanted to see, just to remind me of the past world, the lost world: the Falcon taking off from Mos Eisley into the sky, while a stormtrooper on the ground looks on. It's in some ways a very simple shot, but it grounds the film in reality while also being otherworldly and beautiful. And...you pretty much can't see this. It's not on streaming, not on youtube or vimeo, or anywhere. You need a bitcoin wallet and a working knowledge of Cantonese to try and glimpse a moment from the most popular and ubiquitous movie of all time.
I've still never seen this version. Only the bad VHS I had long ago, on a CRT TV. Mildly off topic, but kind of not: Today, I was milling about in my movie "archive"/hard drive, and I found a copy of A New Hope, separate from my Star Wars folder. It is the original unaltered cut, that looks to be a transfer from an actual 8mm or 16mm physical film home release. The colors are degraded, and it's got tons of film scratches. I have no idea where the hell I got this from, or that I even had it. Fkn weird.
The original THX was much better. Why can't he just make the originals available too? Being a once great filmmaker doesn't mean one isn't a misguided jerk.
The original cut of THX 1138 was, along with 2001: a space odyssey and The Andromeda Strain, one of my favorite films ever. But I hate Hate HATE the digitally modified THX. It has totally lost that irreplaceable feel of 1971, the year I was born. The CGI looks cheesy and tacked on, and it provides no discernible benefit. Can you imagine if Kubrick had gone back and redone the FX for 2001 or A Clockwork Orange? It wild have massacred classics, just as Lucas did.
Lucas just needs to stop this. Maybe he prefers these new altered versions but I think we the viewers should be able to chose how we want to watch them. All DVD and blu ray releases of these films should come with the option to watch either version.
There’s nothing wrong with “continuing to work on his movies”, but I don’t understand why he can’t just be like Francis Ford Coppola and include the unaltered versions alongside the new cuts. I would fork out extra cash just to have both. American Graffiti’s 50th anniversary was completely botched, now film fans will need a “4K73”.

I guess Lucas can't or doesn't want to come up with ideas for NEW films, so he goes back and relentlessly tinkers with his OLD films. I didn't mind the CGI in THX at all. It opens up, expands the world. But it'd be nice to have both versions to compare.

So with TESB and ROTJ - would it not be right to preserve the original versions of these? And release them alongside the special editions?
In my eyes George is the creative mastermind behind those movies whether he's listed as the director or not. I think he certainly has the right to change the movies, but it's scummy that he took away the original versions.

Nope its not fair. He promised Kersh final cut on Empire, the same as he did to Steven on Raiders. It got around Hollywood the atmosphere on Empire Lucas being a control freak and Kurtz's firing that even if Lucas hadn't left the guild no one would touch JEDI. Lynch turned down Jedi because he didn't want Lucas backseat directing. Ironically he did basically ghost direct Jedi and the second unit. Marquand didn't care because he said it was like having Shakespeare there to help you direct one of his plays. Ultimately Kershner went along with Lucas Special Edition , change what you want George its your movie.

I'm the exact opposite of you. I loved the director's cut of THX 1138. I hope it comes out on 4K disc. I have watched the original on VHS back in the day, I prefer the director's cut. Unlike Star Wars, where I'd prefer the originals... although I did find the wampa actually scary in the special edition of Empire Strikes back for the first time after memorizing the originals.
I've never seen the ruined edition in its entirety, but I saw a clip from it in the AFI tribute to George Lucas. I was disgusted that a clip of CGI subway trains was presented by AFI as an example of Lucas's early work, and lost some respect for the organization for basically being Lucas's toady.

I haven't seen the Star Wars SEs, but I do like the THX DC. No, the changes were not necessary. They don't add much for me, but don't detract either. The updated shots are well-considered and well-executed. Having only seen the DC on DVD might have drawn less attention to the differences than watching on Blu-Ray. One of my first DVD buys ever was a bootleg from the THX 1138 laserdisc, which I love but that wasn't a great print. So much of the amazing ambience of THX comes from the sound environments created by Walter Murch! He also worked with Coppola on _The Conversation,_ both are great 70s movies for audio geeks.
You also forgot to mention the altered Young Indiana Jones the DVD isn't the version that aired. Hardly matters now because it can't be canon with the events in Dial of Destiny. Indy doesn't have a daughter or grandchildren.
I like the redone version of THX-1138 because the original is cheap and not beloved. I hate Return of the Jedi & Star Wars special editions. Bad CGI and awful music destroy classic films. Empire is less harmed by wampa and cgi cloud city but color directing it too blue dulls the beauty of the original.
It took a while for George Lucas to find his ideal audience. THX 1138 was made for: adults. It flopped. American Graffiti was made for: teenagers. It was a success. Star Wars was made for: children. Highest grossing movie of all time.

There is also the 1978 directors cut of American Graffiti with dolby stereo and all the cut scenes put back, and the 1978 directors Cut of THX with the cut scenes. When Star Wars was the biggest film ever his original intended cut was released so why years later he did cgi versions? At least with Graffiti in 1998 it was just a cgi added Sunset. THX was destroyed. In the DVD release so called directors cut.
George Lucas didn't destroy anything, on the contrary, the original THX-1138 cut released in 1971 was a box-office flop, Warner cut it and nobody understood the film. George Lucas's Director's Cut only improved the film and gave it a whole new shape, one more in keeping with his vision. The mindlock scene in particular is made more comprehensible and the dystopian world building is made more interesting. Lucas is NOT one of the greatest directors. He had had 3 good films (his first 3) before a became Lucas the businessman and not Lucas the artist. Compare his filmography to his peers (Spielberg, Coppola, Scorsese, and DePalma (who is hit and miss as well) and Lucas doesn’t compare. Even the best Star Wars movie (Empire) he didn’t even direct. Great idea man? Yes! But not director.

However, that because Lucas had a team to give him input and it was a large cast and large set of staff that worked together to make it great. The prequels I are the first films he had total control and surround himself around “yes” men. And the results speak for themselves, not good. Coppola said it best George is a victim of his own success. He could have been great. Let me know when you correct him too.

George Lucas has the right to change his movies for sure. But he has no right forcing people into only watching the version he likes better. Making the original theatrical versions of his altered movies commercially unavailable means that less people will see the actual movies that changed film history, and in a way, it is him basically saying: -This is the version I prefer, so you will either watch this or not watch it at all! He can change his movie how ever he wants to, but he has to respect the fans of his movies enough to choose for themselves. Because it’s those fans that are in large part responsible for his success in the first place. It’s also unfair against future generations who might want to experience the true versions of these movies, but can’t. Re releasing the original Star Wars trilogy for example over and over again but with new special editions, while the theatrical versions are bound to old Vhs tapes and etc. Is actually kind of like erasing history. If I recall correctly, when they started re releasing old classic black and white movies, but in color, George expressed concern, stating that those movies in their original black and white forms represent the time and era from wich they from. Updating them for the sake of making them more watchable or friendly to contemporary audiences robbes people from experiencing these black and white movies from what they are, old black and white movies. Isn’t this kind of what Lucas has been doing with his special editions as well? Although these are his movies (or was) and has the right to do with them as he pleases, he also has to realize that his creations have taken on a life of there own. They have become a part of history and culture. Generations of dedicater fans grew up with them. He has to, respect the historical and cultural significance of his own work. @@philipcao1275 I found a laserdisc transfer with the theatrical cut ☺️ I'm hoping for an HD or 4K remaster, but I have the director's cut blu-ray, which is still the best, most accomplished cut, the one that best represents George Lucas's vision. Comparing cuts is always interesting. I have the VHS just in case. The same for Star Wars (I, IV, V, VI) with the theatrical cuts, and the DVDs of episodes II and III.
I first saw THX about 20-years ago. Took me a while to get my hands on it, but was able to do so thanks to Netflix DVD plan in early 2000s. Blockbuster and the other rental shops never had a copy. I watched both the theatrical and Director's Cut because when I bought it on DVD I bought the Director's Cut. I started to just live with the CGI additions and changes. I recognize them for what they are and just know that I'm not seeing the movie as it was in 1971. Do I like the CGI changes? Not really. They barely add much. But for a study of Lucas and his early work it's sufficient enough to see where he began. I studied his student short when in high school, and could never come close to matching that while in film school. Truly proving Lucas was something special. Even Spielberg has stated he felt jealous of Lucas for his student short. Now, arguably, Spielberg is the better director but, that is a statement proving what Lucas did with that student short. Lucas tinkered. And, ironically so did I. The short I made in 2004 in high school I went back and added muzzle flashes to later after college because I could. I did it in a way that looked like they would have in 2004 since I technically could have done it in 2004, but didn't have the knowledge yet. Still, it was a Lucas moment for myself and my own work. Making any project I always want to tinker and improve it. So I better understand Lucas's motivations. Does it always work for Lucas's films? That's debatable. However, as a filmmaker I understand.

THX 1138 is a mashup of dystopian concepts awash in wonderful compositions and believable characters. It was a product of its time until the new version diluted the raw power with ... some stuff. The problem in the first place is any new footage - forget the CGI. What purpose do these darn changes serve. I would argue none. The new versions of SW are the same kettle of fish. The best way to watch the original Star Wars movie is one of those 16 mm prints floating around. That version is what you would have seen circa 1977. Gritty, dark, downright spooky. I rank THX 1138 as one of the finest films of its genre while the original STAR WARS movie still reigns THEEE greatest action adventure movie man-kind is even capable of producing.
