George Martin - Theme One - Original (Electronic variation)

This is the original electronic version of Theme One, written and produced by George Martin as the theme tune to BBC Radio 1, it has since been covered by many other artists, most notably by Cozy Powell and Van Der Graaf Generator.
Before the advent of 24 hr. radio broadcasting this tune was used as the opening theme every morning at the start of broadcasting, it was also used as the theme tune to Radio1's "Friday night is music night" programme.
George Martin produced two very similar sounding variations of this track both used by the BBC.
This is the more electronic sounding version of the two, and was the version used for the first opening day of radio 1.
This was posted as a video response to the orchestral version which was the first version to be released on record.
For the orchestral version see my upload - "George Martin - Theme One (Original Version)"

One summer in the late 60s, my family drove from Cornwall to Essex to visit relatives. For me, having never really left Cornwall before, this was a big adventure. We drove along the A-38 and the North Circular Road, seeing tall buildings, big company names, and then Heathrow Airport. It was a whole other world. And then, on the radio, this music played. Since then, I've flown millions of miles and experienced many adventures - but this music always sparks in me that initial sense of adventure.

Impossible to transend. Impeccable orchestration. Listen to the trumpets, cellos and violins. George Martin masterful arranger and producer. Sergeant Pepper eat your heart out. Still living the Sixties dream. I'll be a teenager till the day I die. Chris Airey.

As a young child, one of my prize possessions was a small radio. I'd wake up at night to listen to Short Wave broadcasts from around the world. Then I'd switch to Long Wave (1500 metres) as the joint Radio1/Radio2 broadcast began. After several minutes of occasional 'pips', this music would play. It's taken many years of searching, but I am very pleased to have tracked this music down. Many thanks for uploading - and to George Martin for creating.

@@ianmorral4114but as Steve said, radio one used to join up with radio two at certain times. So he is probably right in hearing this tune on long wave where radio two used to be.

Brilliant piece of uplifting music! Brings back memories of being a 13-year-old snuggling under the bedcovers at 2am with the pocket transistor radio. A single earpiece to avoid being heard, listening to that huge and wonderful world of sound without boundaries out there.Now hear that George Martin watermark through this piece with influences of "I am the Walrus", "Strawberry Fields" and "A Day In The Life". Rising strings also prevalent in his production of "You'll Never Walk Alone". GM truly shaped that unique Beatles sound. Marvellous. Ground-breaking. Eternal.

This always makes me remember my very first years at the BBC, making my skin tingle now, we used to play it just before the split of Radio 1 / 2 in the mornings, trying to get it to finish as tight as we could to the Time Signal to make it really difficult for the guys in the Control Room to patch away Radio 2 . . . oh those really were the days, I miss them even now.

I was born and raised Dutch and in my time, BBC radio was not received here....but ever since I discovered this piece through the Van der Graaf Generator version last year, it gives me goosebumps all over too and my throat thickens...can't explain why I get so emotional when hearing it, but that is the power of music. It can do very intense things with a person.

1970 (thereabouts) I used to often leave the radio on (un-broadcasting). BBC radio 1 would play this piece as an opening theme. It was like an alarm-clock. But it was such a mesmerizing track heard while asleep that I would often regain slumber.

HI THERE.I DON'T KNOW WHEN YOU FIRST HERAD IT BUT I FIRST HEARD IT IN 1971 WHEN I USED TO GET UP AT ABOUT 5,15 AM TO GO OFF TO DO ANOTHER DAY OF MY 16 WEEK PIT TRAINING AT MARKHAM MAIN COLLIERY AT ARMTHORPE,DONCASTER ,UK.I TURNED THE RADIO ON RADIO 2 AND THE TUNING "BEEPS" WERE STILL SOUNDING ABOUT EVERY 30 SECS.ALL OF A SUDDEN AT ABOUT 5,30 AM THIS WONERFULL TUNE STARTED PLAYING AND HEARD IT WHIZZING ABOUT IN MY HEAD EVERY TIME I WALKED THROUGH MARKHAMS GATES AND HAS STAYED WITH ME DURING MY TRAINING AND EVER SINCE.I PHONED THE BBC AND ASKED WHAT THE TUNE WAS .THEY SAID IT WAS "BY GEORGE"FROM THE GEORGE MARTIN LP "BY GEORGE" ON SUNSET SLS50182.I GOT THE LP IN 1971 AND NOW 52 YEARS LATER GOT A MINT SINGLE OF IT YESTERDAY FOR £25.

As a teenager I often used to try to wake up early enough to hear this. As has been said, there was a series of bleeps for 5 minutes, a Sine Wave, then silence and then suddenly this was played. I've an idea that it was never played on Sundays.

I always wondered which came first; I am the Walrus, or this song, as they both were recorded in the same year. You can seriously hear a lot of the same kinds of ideas in both songs (I don't mean that in a bad way, I have always adored both songs) and it always made me wonder if his writing in one song gave him ideas for the other.

In reply to HugelyRound, you're absolutely right about the footsteps at the beginning. I've got somewhere a recording on 1/4" tape at 15ips (inches per second) which includes the footsteps. There is also some quieter restful playing on the pipe organ which is something like an Oboe stop against a flute stop accompaniment. I don't remember this introduction in the days when it was broadcast but it may be that I didn't wake up until the later section!
@mikepowell7385
@mikepowell7385 8 лет назад
+John R The version broadcast is the one here - no footsteps. However, the version with footsteps was available on the album, "By George!" The footsteps and gentle background organ was an amazing prelude to the track.

As most of the discussion regarding George Martin centres on the undeniable influence he had over the Beatles' musical direction, I like that you can also hear their influence on him here: if that's not actually Ringo drumming, then it seems apparent that Martin told the drummer to 'play like Ringo'.

@voidgrab How right you are!! I still remember those preceding bleeps, way back in 1972, when I first heard this, and waking me up in the early hours reminding me that I had fallen asleep with the transistor on!! George Martin's greatest masterpiece. Having a similar ending (especially with those conversing trumpets) as Ennio Morricone's "The Strong" from the "Good, The Bad And The Ugly" it has always brought me that strange Civil War feel.

In the early radio one days most of the DJs were ex-pirates and were already very experienced that’s why the programming was so good, unlike the shit radio one puts out nowadays, I can’t listen for more than 30 seconds, Even radio two is full of singers, actors and celebrities, no proper radio presenters.

Still confused, though, as I remember waking up in the morning to the sound of footsteps, of someone seemingly walking into a cavernous hall before the organ starts. The first few seconds therefore seem to be missing but this is definitely the version I used to hear if I (deliberately) left my radio on the night before!!

On balance, I go just for the Electronic version - but that is because it is the one that sticks in my mind from the time. In the pre-24 hours Broadcasts, this music was preceded by a few minutes of low bleeps, followed by a Sine Wave lasting about 45 seconds, which the Engineers seemed to use in order to calibrate the Transmitters (Wonder what they do now?)...and then this. Very 60s, but what's wrong with that??

The word or term 'cool' is redundant / meaningless - especially in the last few decades. BUT here is the real thing! It was a jazz term and crossed over to rock with the mid 60's psychedelic thing. This guy in a suit and tie is truly 'switched on'. Forget the wannabees - Primal Scream (shades and leather trousers......).- bloody ha ha ha!!. This composition with all the sounds and everything is totally out there but at the same time grounded. Also see (or listen to) Joe Meek or Delia Derbyshire. Actually loads of people but beware the hyped pretenders.
