It’s about time. Lakers should have done this when George Mikan was alive. But better late than never. George Mikan was the star player of the 50’s NBA and helped the Lakers win 5 titles.
Well, he never wanted his jersey retired because he said that it was a team effort. This is more of a PR stunt. Also, I guess since he passed, his family wanted his legacy to be solidified.
Mikan was on the Laker team that lost to *The Harlem Globetrotters.* Do you understand how embarassing that is? Never thought Id see the day the current Lakers wearing the same throwbacks from that era. The Knicks allowing 1 guy to score 100pts in a game is bad enough. Losing to a team that plays bssketballl creatively for entertainment, is the lowest moment ever. The Lakers actually played that game
Shaq paid for George's funeral. Such heartwarming move. ❤️ 8:57: now the retired numbers are arranged based on how the Lakers jerseys looked like when they were in their prime! 🏀
For those that don’t know, George Mikan agreed to the idea of implementing a 3pt line when he was a commissioner in the ABA. Think about that. A guy that is known for post scoring agrees to the idea of a 3pt line way earlier than the NBA. Is that why the NBA wants to merge with ABA?
And Mr. Mikan always wanted to have a weapon like a home run in baseball. I also remember Mr. Mikan once said about the idea of implementing the 3 point line “would give the smaller player a chance to score and open up the defense to make the game more enjoyable for the fans".
Love how the lakers updated the player’s jerseys to their respected era and unique uniform. Great move! Really shows the historical depth of our amazing franchise 💜💛💜💛
Thank you Lakers, I have been asking for you to do this for years, Mikan needs to be honored alone for his contributions to not only the Lakers but the game of basketball. The Father of the nba, George Mikan.
Finally! Doing this was a no brainer. I wish this was done when Mr. Mikan and Dr. Buss were alive but better late than never. Mikan a true Legend....once a Laker, always a Laker. Congrats to the Mikan Family. the two brothers looked overjoyed when the jersey was unveiled.
It would’ve been great if this was done while Mikan was alive. But I take solace in knowing that the purpose of these jersey retirements is to highlight a legacy that lives beyond the lifetime of the person. Most people will never be remembered and celebrated like this but George Mike is.
Better late than never. I wasn't alive when Mikan played. But as a kid who was tall and lanky, and having to play with glasses, Mikan was my hero. Without Mikan, there would be no L.A. Lakers, because they wouldn't have been successful in Minneapolis and would have folded like so many other teams from that area. Also, really appreciate the Laker putting the Minneapolis Lakers logo and the banners fot the championships that were won in Minneapolis. That's a hell of a lot better than what the Dallas Stars have done to honor the Minnesota North Stars. Thank you L.A. Lakers!!!
Watch this seeing the five legendary Minneapolis Lakers banners and legendary Lakers big man #99 George Mikan jersey getting his retired gives me chills It’s great day to be LA Lakers. 💙🤍 💛💜
Red Auerbach (Boston Celtics coach) "If you really trace the roots of the NBA tree, George Mikan is the trunk of that tree!!" Bob Cousy (Celtics guard): "He (Mikan) was the one who saved the league (NBA) from extinction." Bill Russell (Celtics center) "He was my hero, he took the time out to spend time talking with me." (Russell met Mikan when he was in college). Wilt Chamberlain: "We (big men) owe a lot to George Mikan, he was the one who opened the doors for us (big men)"
Gotta love how amazing lal fans are. Look at that, no standing ovation for mikan, nope, but if it was shaq or a diffrent dominate big man, who gave the lakers 5 or even 3 titles they be clapping like walrus for fish. These people don't care about mikan or the 1940s or 50s basketball. But they sure want us to love 80s, 90s, 2000s and today basketball.
wow only took 20 years after his death and over 60+ decades to retire the best player of his era and the leagues first superstar who also founded the ABA like smh
I’m an 88 year old titanic survivor. When I was sat in lifeboat two, fighting for my life, I used to think about George Mikan. I remember looking down to my pants and seeing that my onion had gone - tying an onion to your belt was a fashion at the time, pioneered by George Mikan. The pants, I shouldn’t have had on at all. I tried to take them back to the store a week earlier, but slipped in some mud, ruining the very pants I was trying to return.
They didn’t want to admit that 5 Lakers championships weren’t in Los Angeles. Dr Buss didn’t want Mikan’s blue jersey up there. Good thing the Lakers started wearing white
Because they didn’t have last names on the actual jerseys back in those days (despite the framed one they gave to the family). They hung the image of the actual jersey to its true design.
FIIIINALLYYYYYY!!! One thing… The five Minneapolis Lakers banners should just be in line with the rest of them… No need to separate them from the LA ones. Directly under the 5th Minneapolis banner should be the 72 L.A. banner and so on… Like if it was at The Forum, they would all just be in one straight line across, one after the other…they wouldn’t be divided… but all in all, no complaints… Just so glad that they finally did that… Boston has 17 titles, they have 17 banners, we have 17 titles, we should also have 17 separate banners!!!👍🙏 Also, I like how the Minneapolis titles are there each banner… Notice how the Los Angeles titles are one big banner woven together in 3’s… There are three banners woven and connected together… They should separate them a little bit as if they are each their own individual banner with space in between…like at The Forum
Well Boston situation is completely different than Lakers because lakers moved from Minneapolis to Los Angeles and Boston stayed in Boston since the existence of the franchise
The average height of a basketball player in 1950 was around 6ft4 with Centers at around 6ft8 Mikan wasn’t much taller than a lot of them but he was “dominant” with great physicality, passing and an ambidextrous hook shot.
For the longest time, they hung the championship banner that George Mikan was instrumental in achieving, but they didn't retire his number then. It's really about time. Why did it take so long?
@@chrissaade6190 but atleast put his name on the jersey on the wall so people know who he is. Regardless if they had names on the back or not in his era
The reason they don't have it on is they are keeping it real to how the jerseys were made and in those days they didn't have names. If you look at all the jerseys up in the rafters they are all different
It was one of those hidden retired numbers most likely. It's when the club hasn't officially retired the number, but at the same time hasn't allowed other players to use it. With the LA Dodgers, nobody has worn #34 since Fernando Valenzuela. The team hasn't actually retired that number yet hasn't issued it to another player since.
Lamar Odom Jersey should be retire as well because when Shaq traded to Heat. He was represented Shaq's role and helped the Lakers to won a championship back to back in year 2009 to 2010.
Why did the Lakers wait so long to retire Mikan’s number and display banners for the Minneapolis era? Shouldn’t the other Minneapolis legends get their numbers retired too?
@@capitanfuturo594 well out of tha kindness of his heart, George Mikan was willing to let someone else wear #99 because he was more about team vs his number! but u know tha Lakers Organization didn't let anybody touch #99 at all tbh and his family decided it was finally time after for so many years tha Lakers begged to retire Mikan's jersey
Before the Game instead of at halftime??? The disrespect continues. They had some fools doing a skills challenge at halftime instead. Besides the fact that this was way overdue, they gave em a fake Nike jersey instead of a replica. Smh
They updated all the jerseys to look how they did in the era they played in at the time last name wasn’t on the jersey If the lakers retire Lebron number it would be the Nike jersey up there
Former Laker owner Jack Kent Cooke had enough sense to not hang banners from Minnesota... Sleazy Jerry Buss thought it was OK to rip off banners from another state, city and ownership group and call them his own... What a scumbag.
🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯 "LAKERS"....DO YOU WANT TO DO A QUICK FIX BLOCK BUSTER TRADE THAT WILL WORK FOR YOUR TEAM AND WILL ALSO BE A EASY TRADE TO GET DONE..... TRADE ................RUSSELL WESTBROOK FOR JAVALE MCGEE That's the player the Lakers need very bad because he will bring a balance back to the floor, and the team he's on don't play him. He is a perfect fit right now because A,D, can move back to power forward and he will grab offensive boards and jump for lobs and protect the basket. THAT'S YOUR FIX......Come get me as a Thank You if you do this and it saves your season.....GRIM.
because Mikan kept sayin' no even when tha Lakers Organization begged to retire his jersey even from tha 70's 80's 90's and 2000's and finally his family decided it was time
@@master-kq3nw tha thing is, Mikan was willing to let someone else wear #99 out of tha kindness of his heart, but tha Lakers Organization didn't allow anyone to wear #99 even though Mikan was willing to share his #99 because he was more about tha team more than his number. however years went by and then Mikan's family decided it was time
@@master-kq3nw i am aware but still it doesn't change tha fact tha Lakers Organization begged and begged to retire his jersey long before tha Crypt days and they finally got their wish
well Lakers organization for years wanted his jersey retired but George said no but i think they somehow convinced his family enough to approve tha retirement Jersey
They didn’t have a 3 point line and the rules of the day drastically changes how you would dribble and set up plays I suggest you watch and study properly before you chat bollocks online 🤣
Never forget that the city of Boston is the only with 17. Los angeles has 12 and their former city has 5. Your city is never gonna catch up the only things you have more than us is homeless people.
@Sravan Motamarri i've been in more parades in my lifetime than you have birthdays little boy, respect the most decorated city in america. BOSTON THE ONLY CITY WITH 17 NBA WORLD TITLES. LA ONLY WINS IN NUMBER OF HOMELESS PEOPLE!
