Allen Ludden represented the company quite well here.

Look at the rage in Ludden's eyes when he shoots a look to Peppard as the music starts at the end. To hear what went on during the break!

Allen looked pissed off right before the break. WOW. You know, I heard NBC didn't air this show b/c of the rant. During a later tapings of shows, they made six eps with the same two celebs to make up for the day that was skipped. I'm glad game show network aired it.

Allen Ludden WAS Password...they may have had other game show greats replace him, but NO ONE could do Password like Allen (even the great Bill Cullen)!
@nanlisa
@nanlisa 15 лет назад
i never knew about this. But Allen Ludden surely maintained his cool when he mentioned that game shows have to be strictly supervised. Why do you think those quiz shows of the 1950's all went off the air? Because they were rigged, contestants were given answers to the questions in advance, and the networks took away control from the sponsors.

Actually, his feature film career was pretty much over by this point. Just a year later, his difficult behavior got him fired from the TV series Dynasty (he was the original Blake Carrington).

No...according to Wikipedia, he wasn't asked to be back on the show.

George was quite serious. On his first meeting with Dwight Schultz he purportledly said,"I am movie star and I am not a nice man"

I've always thought George Peppard was a class act. I still do. Allen Ludden was class +1. May they both rest in peace. Oh, and by the way, Ludden appeared on an episode of Peppard's Banacek (in a rare acting appearance) as a reporter.

Elaine Joyce. Some people really don't know who she is despite the exposure in the game shows. She was a Broadway-trained dancer who starred with Robert Morse in the musical, "Sugar." "Sugar" was adapted from "Some Like It Hot," the movie that starred Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon. Her on-air ditziness charmed Mark Goodson and he had her on most of his shows. She was married to dancer Bobby Van until 1980 after his passing from Cancer. She cuurently is married to Neil Simon.

Actually, Bill Cullen took his place for four weeks in 1980, Allen came back, and when he couldn't do the show anymore, his good friend Tom Kenned did indeed succeed him as host of the show with Betty White's blessing.

I noticed how they came from commercial to do the rant and back into commercial. I wonder if NBC producers there on the scene knew that the rant wouldn't make it to air on the network, so they put the commercial after the rant to allow the network to seamlessly edit without too much of a notice [so it made it seem as if Peppard forgot to say the rant at the end]

If you don't want to abide by the rules of a game show, don't sign the contract to appear on it. Allen Ludden handled that very well. A big raspberry to George Peppard.

I can see why they didn't air this episode when it was originally supposed to air.
@bainsey89
@bainsey89 18 лет назад
In fairness to George, he did this before ep before he did the A-Team, so his career was far from being in the dumper. That being said, he didn't help himself at all with that rant, and Mr. Ludden handled that with class and dignity.

It was also unfair to Goodson-Todman and to the audience watching. The audience is being subjected to another person's selfish annoyance. NBC of course backed Goodson-Todman in this instance. Bless Allen Ludden.
@bluebear1985
@bluebear1985 17 лет назад
Exactly. He had obviously not heard about the quiz show scandal of the 50s. The most infamous one from that era, "Twenty One", aired on NBC, so it's too bad he wasn't notified of this.

Man, Allen Ludden is a class act. Wonderful man, and he very excellently (and politely, and basically indirectly) rebutted the argument made by Peppard. God rest Allen Ludden's soul--he left us much too early.

What you saw was the only time a guest celebrity was asked to leave a game show. George Peppard's comment was totally out of line because a game show is supposed to be fun. Viewers did not to see at the time ranting from their guests. Allen Ludden did show his annoyance, but showed his brilliance by de-fusing the potential problem directed at the President of The Network. Ludden correctly explained that networks keep a close eye because of the game show scandals of the 50s. It was also unfair t

GP obviously had no sense of history. He completely forgot the game show scandal of the 50's. Of course they had to sign a form to protect the network and the integrity of the show and the industry. Ludden handled him with grace. I bet GP was never invited back.

@wschmrdr
@wschmrdr 11 лет назад
Sort of but not quite, because GSN chose to air it, hence why Ludden threw it to commercial immediately (or at least the producers told him to do so). Instead, contestant and audience plugs or schedule announcements (this was around the time Letterman kicked game shows off the air) were probably shown that GSN doesn't show. It's like the PYL 30k win during the first HPS series.

@3211Victoria Because George Peppard was whining about the pre-cursors he had to go through, and decided to talk about it. NBC, as a private establishment, refused his further services, and decided not to air his grievance. However, he could have put it out anywhere, and the only ones that could stop him were the publishers.

I wish to complain about game shows that have celebrities teamed up with non-celebrities. If the celebrity isn't a good player, the contestant gets screwed out of big bucks! I'd be pretty aggravated if I have 9 words right in Alphabetics and my celebrity partner utters an illegal clue on the 10th and I lose the $5000. I've seen this sort of thing happen on Pyramid.

...George Peppard behaved like a self-absorbed prick during this episode. He also pulled a low-key version of this same bullshit on an episode of Match Game. Peppard was a fine actor and very handsome, but a legendary alcoholic. He appeared slightly blotto during subsequent appearances during the same week. Allegedly verbally and physically abusive towards (The Carpet Baggers) costar; & second ex-wife, actress Elizabeth Ashley. Eventually he stopped drinking and lost his looks, if not his star quality during his A-TEAM career comeback. A heavy smoker, Peppard succumbed to lung cancer in 1994, aged 65.

what happened exactly to make Peppard go off on this rant to begin with?

I think it was a questionable call where "camp" was allowed as a clue for "campfire" and that pushed him over the edge. That being said he was probably just being a jerk.
