The funny thing is that even though all of the other times he did that it was on accident was his fault while this moment he was a victim of circumstance. Royal Flush is the biggest hand in poker and if you wanted to give a clue to the word Flush and you got the idea to use poker terms what would you use besides Straight?
I totally agree with Bert's reasoning. Obviously he would have increased the probability of someone guessing "royal" for the puzzle answer, but why would it not be allowed for him to give a clue to what he thought was just the best clue for the first word, as long as he didn't know it was the puzzle answer?
@@JoeyLamontagne Allen Ludden acknowledged blowing puzzle solutions, but these were always edited out, because the producers felt he didn't handle those mistakes very well. Tom and Bert, on the other hand, were able to laugh it off and move on.
@@Nickrj3 Yes, that was funny... didn't give away the Password, but gave a perfect clue for "Shore". While I am sure it was more than once, I've only seen Allen accidentally blurt the password one time in the original run.
I've seen episodes where the contestants/guest stars have said the ultimate in their clues before. I think in this case, the producers killed the puzzle because it was the host. It would have seemed sketchy to the audience [both in-house and watching on TV] if Bert said "Royal" as a hint for that puzzle, and it turned out that "Royal" was the ultimate, changing the results of the game.
I figured toilet too. I loved that. I don't know why the rules would say that if someone even mentions the word then it's over. No one would have been the wiser.
I blame the celebrities for being lousy cluegivers which led to Bert's "royal" giveaway. Royal was a very good clue which Bert was meant to give. And the classic toilet clue.
I would've said toilet. [form of the word blips] [Ca$hword warble] [illegal clue buzzer] [ding] [buzzer] [deep buzzer] Bert blew it. Royal was the answer to the puzzle.
He's right Royal is the perfect clue. At least it would have been my guess for sure, he was very unfortunate to have given the answer away. He was only helping out and paid the price.
Why the hell didn't they give Convy the answers to the puzzles at the beginning of the round?? Since he really was kind of a doofus and kept screwing up!
Bert blowing puzzles was all part of the fun of the game. In the seven days I was on the show, I think he threw five puzzles. I was laughing harder and harder each time he thew a puzzle. Bert was very apologetic about it, but I told him that the game was about fun and I was grateful for just being a contestant.
5 mistakes over a period of 7 days isn't so bad, and I'm sure it was very funny. However, there's another episode (with Patty Duke) where Bert messes up 2 games within minutes of each other; the 2nd time when the game was almost completed... audience was booing, Patty was scolding him, and Bert laughs and says, "Oh God, I did it AGAIN?!" He was obviously a very popular, well-loved host, but after a certain point, I think some kind of preventative measure might have been a good idea -- that's all I'm saying. Glad you had such a great experience, though!
He was a great host in game shows Tattletales Super Password to name 2, also I saw a pilot show on Match Game before he passed away and I thought he did great on that one also.
if you remember the David Seville character (on the 80s cartoon Alvin & the Chipmunks) you'll probably have a good idea of what Bert Convy was like in real life! I expected to Bert yell "Alvin!!!" just like Dave would
that's an error for the one who comes up with words for the puzzle up there, not the announcer. if i might say, he was really straight on when he said his remarks about the clues! and the second puzzle being directly related to a clue on the first one? c'mon! that's kinda like making a crossword puzzle with just 10 words repeating over and over again!
+iguana 91 Probably enough to have even the people in the network's Standards & Practices laughing their butts off. Part of the thing is that this is also entertainment, and as long as the game is not rigged, as far as I know, it's allowed to be aired.
