Man, i know GRRM does not want children, but he would be a fantastic grandpa. "Tell me a story grandpa!" "Ok, well once, in a world were winter lasts decades..."
Toby Kral You got furious when a popular show has foul language and nudity? Obviously you don't give two shits about the story GRRM is trying to tell. If that's what is going to turn you off of a piece of fiction I suggest you watch Caillou or some other show for children such as yourself.
Toby Kral Say what you will but I don't believe GoT falls into the notion that it has vulgarity for the sake of vulgarity. No matter how offensive or twisted or demented a scene will be, it's all for a purpose. After all our actions and deepest desires convey who we truly are, do they not?
Toby Kral There's a thousand other hugely popular shows that also have tons of immoral shit like, oh idk, *murder*. But since our culture is so needlessly hung up on sex, we forget about it. Gearge R.R. Martin put it best: "I could write the most detailed description of an axe entering a human skull, and no one would care. I could then write a detailed description of a penis entering a vagina, and everyone would freak out."
Suivant la logique d'internet, cet ordinateur en DOS n'est pas mis à jour, donc vulnérable, donc n'importe qui peut se connecter dessus et voler les scénarii!
Yes I'm with him on this -- kicking it old-school! I know you can change the settings and turn off autocorrect and spellcheck and whatnot, but like he said, who cares? I have a machine that does exactly what I need it to do. No more, no less.
Spell check is cool but grammar check really pisses me off. Yes, I get that I write things in the passive voice, you sometimes have to do that if you're writing an academic paper. Meanwhile if I'm writing anything that isn't a research paper, I don't need you pointing out every time I use a contraction. It gets especially annoying when I'm writing a script and it points out every time a sentence ends with a preposition. I'm TRYING to write the way people talk for fuck's sake.
+Siren Hound Maybe that's why they stressed Congress to not cut funding to their programs. They're working around the clock to hack into a DOS word processor XD
Docktor Jim For a first time ever. I see someone demanding GRRM to write more, but also is honest and states it himself "my writing would never be as good as what he writes". Many times people just cry for another book and then the troll war starts.
"Airport the Conqueror TireCenter and his sisters Visceral and Rainbow" "Can Drop-box and his wife Diabetes TireCenter" "Timing Loneliness and his children Corset, Jaime and Thyroid." "Lord Edward Stark's children, Robb, Sandwich, Aryan, Brand and Raccoon" "WesternRoads, Essays, Marinera, Yankee, the Dolores Sea"
George R.R. Martin is awesome! He told the story on a podcast once about how he attended the first ever comic con (Which was set up by Len Wein) and was actually the first person to sign up. So technically he is the original comic con goer.
G.R.R.M. was a legendary comic fan back in the 60's and 70's. He was a regular feature in the letter columns of many publications. He was like the Tim "Two Face" Leighton of that day.
Now I'm tempted to put a chapter of GoT into a word program and run spell check to let it "fix" everything. Should be an interesting read once its done.
I bet the real reason why he uses a DOS based system that's not connected to the internet, is because it can't be hacked and people accessing the rest of the story and leaking it online.
I'm not a Conan hater, and this isn't directed at him solely, but when these talk shows have someone on that actually has things to say, how about letting them TALK instead of interrupting with stupid jokes every ten seconds. Maybe it's just me.
I do a lot of copywriting. I tried WS4 after seeing this video the first time. I'm back to say I managed to get hold of a manual and I already know DOS anyway. Using vDOS and WS4 is a pleasure. It's distraction free, and very easy to use. As a programmer I use Vim all the time, and before WS4 I used Vim to write everything. I gave org-mode a try, but I'm not really an emacs guy (Vim fanboy). Now looking for a real DOS machine purely to run WS4. The security aspect of the decision for George R.R Martin is clever tbh.
Yeah honestly it makes a lot of sense, and he's not the only writer I've heard if who stuck with WordStar. There's a huge difference between word processing and typesetting, and there are entirely valid reasons to keep the two concerns separate.
Actually, programs for professional writers are VERY simple. It's not MS Word, they are like notepad, just with cloud saving, nice font and basic markdown syntax.
"programs for professional writers are VERY simple." - That is ONE opinion, usually held by the older generations, who just don't know any better. Meanwhile, younger generations of writers have moved on from simple text editors, and are totally comfortable using full-featured programs such as MS Word. For example, I started writing in the late 70's on a typewriter, graduated in the 80's to a computer, and today I'm totally comfortable with any of the three. I normally do a lot of my early drafts on an MS-DOS era word processor, (Leading Edge), just because it's the first "word processor" I ever used, but I always end up importing into MS Word for formatting, spell check, ect. towards the end. Martin meanwhile never upgraded most likely because he was already coming up on 50 years old in the 80's, when computers first hit big, and it's common for people in that age group to fix on one era of technology.
@@zenna4474 Most likely I had meant to type 40, and the 50 was a typo, but since it was so long ago I can't be sure, but either way, even late 30's - 40 in that era would have put him into the age group where people would resist change, (or upgrading) when it came to computers. It was a very common phenomenon back in those days, I saw it happen at a company I worked for as an IT tech in the mid-90's - an entire department nearly quit en masse when told by management that their Windows 3.11 computers would be getting an upgrade to Windows 95 - everyone went ballistic. The older the person was, the more resistance the company ran into, because they all felt comfortable, (safe?), with the setups they were using, no one wanted to learn something new, even if that something new was actually better.
It's no joke. You use early 80s DOS machine to write text. It just works and responds fast enough. You use modern PC with billions of cycles per second? Editor doesn't load instantly, there are many annoying "features", it's heavy bloatware that struggles to keep up.
My main concern is that he is running it on an ancient computer from the 90's with a 20meg hard drive that is going to fail...Then I wont get my game of thrones.
i still use wordstar until somewhere in 2005, back then my trusty old compaq laptop which runs win98, also have plethora of dos programs (and games) in it. and when i want to do some writing just go back to dos mode. man i miss those times now
Those who have had some education in psychology may realize that the more senses that are involved, the more memories will be triggered making recollection easier. So for Martin to use the same word processor that he BEGAN THE MULTI-NOVEL BOOKS with makes perfect sense in that light. Doing so will allow him to more easily remember and recall more quickly details in the previous books, as well as to rekindle the creative spark that threads itself through all the books.
That computer is gonna be more valuable than its weight in diamonds when George has finished writing them books, he'll probably double his fortune if he sells it.
Honestly, that's a smart way to go. Even if it was internet connected (yes you can, I'm a retro-gamer and use 3 different DOS PC's for that from the early 80's to the early 90's), viruses just go over the top now since anything programmed to be malicious in 2015 was programmed for Windows NT based systems - everything is way different. And also, those old computers are very reliable when well maintained. Not like the majority of what we have these days which is Chinese made garbage that lasts until the warranty expires.
+Mad-Mike's "Creeping Net" Channel actually China don't have a company that can manufacture a processor till quite recently :I, and believe me it's not popular at all
You can have a modern computer not connected to the internet... And the problem with his method is that old hard drives fail eventually. He can deactivate all the features he doesn't like in a modern word processor. Even a virtual dos machine running in a modern computer i think is a better option.
This is hilarious to me because, as an aspiring fantasy author myself, I have a ton of made-up words I had to add to my spellchecker so it would stop telling me Tankraea was "tank area"
I'm writing a sci-fi/space opera. All of my names in it are based off of modern names, for instance: Adam becomes Eidam, Melanie becomes Milani, etc. It's so damn annoying!
Funny R.R. Martin uses WordStar since their manuals were 1,000 pages. He probably types on those old Model M keyboards, since the clickety-click sound lended so much gravitas to your typing.
That really would suck. Easy to do a find and replace, but you have to scour the entire novel just to find the copies of one word let alone hundreds of copies of hundreds of words.
Before they get that far it has to be imported into Word, and reformatted, (everyone uses Word it seems for actual pre-publishing work), and THAT would be the real nightmare...
Staying active or interested/motivated in something will extend your life longer than exercise will. Eating right might be the number one thing though, especially for older people.
This is very true. As an amateur fantasy writer, spell check can be very annoying, at least as annoying as it is helpful. And I NEVER use autocorrect on my writing programs.
Dos word programs are great. They are very relaxing on the eyes with the blue background, easy to read font and simple with function keys. Documents can be easily opened in modern office suite. I learned typing on Word 5.5 on a IBM 386 in high school on a buckling spring keyboard. Had two 5.25 floppy drives. One was the constant save. The other was the finished save. Good times. I'm back to using old software and games. Laptop cpus have finally become fast enough to emulate an entire 386 or an 8086 for that matter all the way up to a pentium 2 now. Build a machine in PCEM or 86box and soak in all the DOS goodness.
I just stopped watching the series. Is not even following the book events anymore. My new hope is "The Last Kingdom", a series from the Saxon Chronicles. IMHO, it's better than A Song of Ice and Fire and I really hope BBC will do a good job!
BaSkA But it's amazing in its own right. I haven't read the books, and I'd probably be really pissed if I had, but you have to treat it as a separate entity. Just like how I'd hate the bastardization of halo four if I still thought of it as halo
Sweet lord I haven't used WordStar since the CP/M version I used back in high school to do reports and write D&D modules. I can't imagine doing all that CTRL-ALT-SHIFT-B crap to format things in a non wysiwyg interface anymore haha.
I don't think George R.R. Martin knows that you can add words to the Word dictionary by simply right clicking the underlined word once and choosing the add to dictionary option. At least I think that is a thing?
May he live a really really really long life and keep writing GoT! Such a witty and adorable old man. He seems so happy :) And please keep Jon Snow and Tyrion alive! and Ghost :)
You can turn off check spelling as you write, and check grammar as you write, and also turn off auto correct etc in Word. If you want, you can do a final check after finishing writing. I wish people would learn how to use Word properly. NB I still use Word XP on Windows 7, with the Office Assistants (they're tricky to get back, but it's possible).
At least computers from that era are super robust. Hell, my dust covered 286 under my bed still runs great, every time I get nostalgic for wolfenstein 3d. The damn thing has outlived about 7 other modern computers.
Well you can turn those features off :P. But it is good to have a dedicated non networked computer though. You could use a cloud service if you are worried about viruses though. Save it, and it is stored on the web.
I REMEMBER having to use WordStar 4.0. You had to learn a long series of control commands to make it do anything, including word wrap. I couldn't wait to dance on the grave of WordStar. Feel free to keep on using it JRRM; no thanks.
