One of the things I really like about the books is that none of the characters say that the Gods of another religion don't exist. One might worship the Seven but they don't make fun of the Tree Gods, they'll just say something like "oh, well, here in the South, the Old Gods don't have much power."
@Anonymous_P
@Anonymous_P 5 лет назад
That is also something that I really like, it's like they all accept all gods can exist and it is just a matter of the place and the circunstantes, like (completley fake nom related example) "the god of he who didn't come back favors the families of those who lose their life in war" "oh really? Well my gods, the gods of the fizzlerocks favor those who stay silent and are wise". Like none denies the existence of any god and are just accepting, maybe sometimes scared of some gods like Caitlyn when she was weirded out by the gods of the north that were like tree gods, bit she was like "those gods were weird, she prefered to follow those she knew and trusted: the seven, despite of them not having that much power in this place, it feels better". It's really cool how it does not mirror reality in this aspect.
@superpartes4990
@superpartes4990 5 лет назад
This attitude towards religion really resembles the way it was handled in classical antiquity. Many cities and tribes had their own protector deities and pantheons and across the faiths they were partly seen as incarnations of each other and partly as a different kind of entity. For example the Romans adored the god Saturn, whom was partially identified with the Greek Chronos, but had a lot of different aspects to his personality and sphere of influence. Since there was a huge variety of deities and since they were partly the personification of concepts it was really easy to just see religion as a continuum where the same concept - like nature, time, war, peace, knowledge, wisdom, fertility, love, justice, mischief, art, health, sickness, death and others - could be incarnated under different names and with different mythical stories associated to it. And reversely the same name could be associated with different concepts.

George missed out on one particular situation he could’ve talked about, if he really wanted to parallel what it was like in the middle ages. He needed a religion from Essos which he called something along the lines of fatherism [If you want to more fat full name, I would call it Abbatism]. This religion is similar to the religion of the seven, but unites the divine into the single father, and doesn’t believe in anything else besides that. You could then have this religion try to go to all of these different parts of the world, and find it hard to fit in with any of them, because they all “know“ That there is either one guard in seven, or many gods not just the one. Obviously I would be taking from the idea of Judaism and how difficult it was for them in the middle ages, but you may have other ideas.

Good stories require things the readers can relate to in some way. If it is completely alien and foreign in all ways you find very few readers willing to work their way through it. So yes having religions that are familiar, yet different is the best way to approach this. The same is used for cultures. Authors will often borrow from real world cultures/nations and then add some unique flairs to make them appear different. Not only is it a good writing style to bring in readers, it's also a lot easier on the author. Yes you could pull a Tolkien and invent your own languages, but will it have any pay off in the books? Not really. Few readers will appreciate the intricacies and comlexity of what you have done as an author.

The doctrine of the Trinity is not hard to understand if you pay attention. God is one in being, three in person. It draws a distinction between personhood and being-hood.

The concept of this world being the evil god's world is actually the concept of Christianity too. According to what the bible is saying, this whole current world is a witness to why following god from the beginning would have been a good idea and how the complete opposite (what we get with Satan running the world today) is not such a good idea. It's proving God's case without forcing you to come to that realization without free will. In "the end" this is all supposed to be presented to us as proof that A. Falling away was a bad idea, and B. It's time to do away with Lucifer/Satan before the "new universe/world" is created for the rest of eternity and existence.

Creepy Closet Well, I think that if you were to interpret that a bit deeper than just the face value then you might find that saying the world’s perfect might just mean that you shouldn’t blame anyone else but yourself for your misfortunes. The world might not be perfect but you should act as if it were, because no matter how unfair it is you still have to fight on.

He's a bitter ex Catholic who has made his allegory for Catholicism (the Faith of the Seven) the ONLY one that doesn't work. Every other one is valid. The "old gods", the Lord of Light, the various faiths in Essos, etc., all of them work.
