Definitely think it was the right decision to promote George as he’s the future of Mercedes and he’s definitely shown his talent recently with his points and P2 in quali!
I do think this is the right move for Merc. They haven't gotten a young driver in their top team yet, and with Lewis set to retire in a couple of years time it's a practical idea to stick George w/him while he's still there and in his prime so that he could learn something and eventually lead the team to more success in the future. For George, it's nothing short of amazing. He's shown the capability to perform w/them, it makes sense to think that he believes he can make his mark on the entire organization from '22 onwards. I'm looking forward to seeing what this pairing could do. Hopefully they're able to reach the heights that only being dreamt of right now!
I strongly believe Toto knows what he's doing. Besides, Valtteri said that if they had offered him another 1 year contract he would have walked away to another team himself. If he said that to "save face" or if he meant it - I don't know. In case you're interested in the exact manner he said it - I got this info on Formula World channel, video's called something with Knife On The Throat or smtg like that.
While us fans view F1 as a sport, the teams view it as a business. I feel so because for 5 years Mercedes only offered Bottas a 1 yr contract. Half a decade of 1 yr contracts....that's ruthless, brutal and sure to have affected him in some way. I'm glad that Bottas now has a multi year contract. Excited to see George go up against Lewis and Max !!!!
How can you even ask if he is worth promoting. Judging from past performances with a slower car. Then when he substituted for lewis last year and beat bottas he more than deserves the drive. The only thing I'm concerned about if he will fit in and adapt with the team also if he will get the same support and treatment as lewis
As most teams with up-and-coming stars, it'd be natural for Mercedes to centre the team around George from 2022 onward. If this turns out to be the case, the next question is: will Lewis be ok with that new arrangement?
