George Strait accepts the T. Boone Pickens 2014 Lifetime Sportsman Award at the 8th annual Park Cities Quail Dinner and Auction. The event, known as "Conservation's Greatest Night" was held on March 6, 2014 at the Frontiers of Flight Museum in Dallas, Texas.

I have immense respect for George Strait as an entertainer, musician, songwriter, Sportsman, a Rancher who takes into account the needs of the environment and wildlife on his ranch. And last but not least a Christian.

I met his dad at a concert in 1989. George had won entertainer of the year. Johnnie Rodriguez was opening since Kieth Whitley had passed. Man I knew he would be a legend. A true American. Thank you George.

About half way through this video I stopped listening to George Strait the singer and started listening to George Strait the fellow hunter and conservationist. I feel like I could sip a beer or a whiskey sour with him and talk hunting and conservation and forget why he is so famous. What I'm really saying is, this just proves how down to earth he really is. As a life member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and Mule Deer Foundation I tip my hat to your passion for conservation and hunting.

I grew up just down the road from George and played on the same stage as he. My 2010 biography of his life tells the story of those South Texas days of hunting and fishing on big ranches. He's a damn good guy, always kind to me, especially when we played the old Wishing Well Club in Pearsall, Texas.

I love Heartland, I can't see Texas from here, Run, The last in love, Two more wishes, El Rey, God and Country Music, You're dancing this dance all wrong, Lone Star Blues , Twang and I could go on like that for a while because I like all the songs you perform. When I'm sad I just try to listen to happy songs and avoid the sad ones ...

I'm so glad he's speaking on the dwindling quail population. I live in Midland,Texas and have a ranch in Mason Tx. In both places, Midland especially where bird populations are typically booming, the quail have all but disappeared. I know the fireants around here have alot to do with it, so do the booming hog population, the snakes, and especially the big cats mostly bobcats but mountain lions and leapords as well. It terribly hurts my heart to think there's a possibility of the quail disappearing for good and it's up to all of us in the hunting community to do our best to improve conditions however we can. Balancing the number of natural predators and providing suitable habitats would be a good start. I personally wouldn't be opposed to placing them on the endangered species list for awhile or at least ban the hunting of them for 2-3 years to see if that would help the population. Whatever we can do, we owe it to nature and our future generations to do it

@Lindsey That's terrible. I'm glad the cat decided against defending his food. I know California has similar issues with mountain lions because the government doesn't allow any kind of hunting for them(unless for self defense I think but you still get in trouble). The population of the cats is honestly out of control there. The thing with mountain lions is that they like being alone and are extremely territorial. So the alpha cats will stake their claim in the good places and drive the others away, that added with overpopulation and a lack of a food source brings them into suburban areas where they can easily grab pets. There's also been many instances of children and hikers being attacked where typically the lions don't roam. It's not the cats fault, but that is what happens when the ecosystem becomes unbalanced, too much or too little of any one species can throw everything out of wack. California hires govt paid sharpshooters for millions of dollars a year to indiscriminately kill as many as they can. When what they should do is open a season for them and regulate how many are killed the same way we would for any other game. Brings in millions in revenue every year and would protect millions more in agriculture and ranching. Not to mention help with keeping them out of people's back yards. It's all about managing the populations and keeping a healthy balance in the ecosystem. Alot of people don't like the idea of hunting or killing animals, but what they don't realize alot of the time is that in order for the future generations of animals to have resources to live, some of the older have to die. Simply limited supply with too much demand.
