Scott, thanks for doing this; that bottle is a unicorn these days even when you can pony up the dollars. Bart, it is so rare to get an honest but negative take on a popular, hyped or even genuine loved whiskey- it is refreshing! I too don't like the older oaky bourbons despite their prestige, so it feels good not to be alone on this. Cheers Boys!
A score of 84 seems too high for a whiskey you don't like. I would think below 70 somewhere , if it is something you don't enjoy? Kinda like grades in school - below 70 is the D and F zone.
I really enjoyed this review guys. It's not often we get a Stagg review and seeing that bottle on your table seemed like a blast from the past. I can see both points of view regarding this iconic drink. A lot of rare whisky get's an easy ride because of additional ownership bragging rights. I've never managed to land a bottle for a sensible price so I have to use my imagination and get tasting notes from folk like you. I have been fairly successful getting Stagg Jnr over the years but that's probably a thing of the past now. Stagg and Pappy are legendary expressions but are they what they once were? I have serious doubts. Stagg Jnr was about half the age and I've always loved it. Not too much oak but with all the great Stagg flavour. You mention Elijah Craig which is interesting because I always thought that the old regular 12 (47% abv) was at the threshold of oak. Most reviewers always said that the EC18 had tipped the balance and had too much oak. I love ECBP which doesn't like water. Bringing it down to 47% really ramps up the oak and this happens with all high strength bourbons when adding water. I used to think it was a stupid macho thing to drink it neat but that's how I prefer it these days. Happy Christmas to you both. WT
Sugar and Spice and Everything nice))))))) i wish it was more available for the masses, just wishful thinking)))))))retail price great buy , secondary ridiculous!!!!!Cheers!!!
Bart said it before I could comment that he is just a cheap date. I align with Scott's palate most of the time although I was into Peat before he was. Sherried Peat is my fav.
Got to get me somebody GTS!. Just got gifted a bottle of Chicken Cock bourbon and Oban 14, what do You think of them guys?. Great video Scott, great video Bart , honest as always!
Great review. I’m in a lottery in my state for the BTAC and Pappy bottles. I’m torn between the GTS and the HANDY if I win. Big rye fan so not sure which one yet. Not that I will win I believe I’d be more likely to be struck by lightning before winning.
