George Thorogood and The Delaware Destroyers have played this song thousands of times, try every night playing out for the last fifty years, but this is still the best version.

Interesting you say that. I bought the collection album, late 80’s I think, which included a live version of this song. For me, that will always be “the” version. Don’t get me wrong, this is good but the “best” one will always be the one that brings back the most memories, drunken as they may be 😏

"One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer" was written by Rudy Toombs and recorded by Amos Milburn in 1953, John Lee Hooker in 1966, and George Thorogood in 1977. Amos Milburn's version strolls around a piano. John Lee Hooker's version rocks a full combo behind his real folk blues. George Thorogood's version growls all the way through to the end like a triple shot of that stuff!

I thought it was two songs put together. The first bit with the landlady was one song, and 'One Bourbon..." was another. Story was that George's band was doing a show, it was break time, and George started playing all alone by himself onstage that first song about the landlady. And as he went on band members started coming back to the stage one by one until they kicked into "One Bourbon...." And it became one song they did.

He epitomizes "bad boy" and hard drinking. Some of his more popular songs, off of the top of my head, are "Who Do You Love", "I Drink Alone" and "Move It On Over". That third one is a cover. I like "You Talk Too Much" and "Willie and the Hand Jive" which is another cover.

So is 'Who Do You Love' and 'Move It On Over' as well as 'One Bourbon One Scotch and One Beer'. He wasn't a song writer. He said that he took other people's songs and played them better.

In the 80s I had 2nd row seats for George and my girl at the time was drop dead gorgeous with smile that lights the room just like Asia’s. He was eyeing her the whole show. Towards the end he was going off on this solo for like 5 minutes. It was epic. He jumps off stage and solos his way down our row, comes up to my girl and makes her stand up. He plays with 5 finger picks, one for each finger. He takes them off and placed them in her hand. Didn’t look at me once , the bastard. It was awesome.😳

Three or Four years after I saw him in concert opening for The Rolling Stones, I was sitting in a small dark lounge/bar after work with some friends watching a popular local acoustic duo [bluegrass and blues] act. When they were about to take a break they introduced a friend that was going to come up and fill the 15 minutes. We were all "whatever", then all of a sudden walking up to the tiny stage was George Thorogood and his acoustic guitar and did a small intimate set, including this song. Twenty people in that bar had no idea that we were going to be honored to meet this man and hear him play for his friends and us. I will Never forget that night.

That's pretty cool, I stopped at a C&W bar one night coming home from a party, with some girls I knew, the bar manager being another friend. He gave us a table, comped a round of drinks, and we watched the last set of the house band. As people started to leave, the guitar playe/singer said, "Wait, some friends want to jam with me awhile". Then he introduced three members of R.E.O, Who had just played at the Pontiac Silverdome, and they did a 20 minute jam of "Johnny be good" with him. Just life in the seventies!

I met George at the Bomb Factory in Dallas. I was delivering propane to the club's owner when the tour bus pulled up. I was starstruck! As I was getting the owner to sign for the delivery, George Thorogood asked me if I was coming to the show? I said I couldn't afford to go. He told the owner to give me 6 tickets! Then he told me he wanted to do a tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan, but wondered if it might be too soon? I told him we would love it if he would do it!!&! He showed me a hat SRV had given him and asked me if he should wear it? HELL YEAH, I told him!!^! My friends and I sat next to the stage, had plenty to drink, and got to hang out with him and the band after the show!!&! I will never forget that whole day!!&! Super nice and an amazing musician!!&!

There are some good stories coming out of Newark, DE, about George and the Boys. George loved baseball and pro wrestling. He played semi-pro ball till the Boys made him quit. Then the group went on tour of 50 States in 50 days where 48 of the State's venue were traversed to by car - specifically in George's Checker car and a van. There's also the story of the Destoyers and the Nighthawks playing in venues across the street from each other in Georgetown where in a pre arranged point George and Jimmy Thackeray of the Nighthawks walked out, exchanged guitars and each played with the other band. George and the Boys played the local townie bar in Newark, with George dancing and playing on the bar, they were the penultimate bar band. It wasn't until a few days before the start of the 50/50 tour that I got to see them in a stadium venue when they got to front for the Stones tour in Boulder and then later at Red Rocks. Great to dance to but never made my playlist. Twenty-five years later he wouldn't even take my phone call. But a shout out to Billy and Jeff who are righteous dudes and provided the basic force underlying their music. 🎶 Soon good memories.

"One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer" (originally "One Scotch, One Bourbon, One Beer") is a blues song written by Rudy Toombs and recorded by Amos Milburn in 1953. John Lee Hooker did a cover and added his signature "boogie" blues style. When George Thorogood recorded it for his 1997 debut album he combined it with a cover of another John Lee Hooker song - the "House Rent Boogie".

Back around the year 1999, I was living in my hometown in the suburban south of Boston Massachusetts, and going to a certain diner for dinner and beers. They had a great jukebox, and I loved this song having heard it years ago. Every time I went in there I played that song again and again and again so the whole house had to hear it! George Thorogood and the Delaware destroyers, adapting to different blues songs and making them one. Brilliant! I saw George Thorogood in Cambridge Massachusetts live, he does this thing where it was a fairly small club in a long narrow room, he took his damn guitar with his cord and went out into the street to finish this song!

You should do his version of "Move it on Over" which was written and originally recorded by Hank Williams in '47 or '48. George gives it the genuine Thorogood treatment, and ended up with a rock hit. Most people who have grooved to it have no idea it was a Hank Senior tune.

Another guy to check out who has a great guitar along with the great stories, but in a slightly more country blues vein, is Junior Brown. Try "My Wife Thinks You're Dead" or "Highway Patrol."
