George Washington: Facial Reconstructions & History Documentary. What did George Washington do during his lifetime, why is he so important, and even one step further, what did he really look like?
Narration & Art: Becca Segovia
Writing, Editing & Music Direction: Andre Segovia
What did America’s first President really look like? I think it’s a question we all THINK we know the answer to, but when looking at portraits of Washington, despite all having the curled 18th century ponytail, grim expression and possibly tricorn hat, they actually all look quite different.
Surprisingly, very few were created from life. Washington apparently hated sitting for portraits, thinking they were a waste of his time. He resolved only to sit for portraits meant for public bodies or for a particular purpose (that was not the painter’s). For this reason, many images we see of him today are copies.
Luckily, in 1785,when Washington was 53, French sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon visited him at his Mount Vernon residence. His mission was to take a life mask - a plaster cast of Washington’s face - which he would then use to create sculpture copies. The mask was used to sculpt what’s known as “Washington’s Official Likeness” - this lifesize sculpture located in the Virginia state Capitol.
Based on physical descriptions from his lifetime, it’s no doubt that Washington became someone of prominence. Standing over six feet tall, he would have towered over his contemporaries. He was described as having strong facial features. A strong brow over his blue eyes, a firmly set jaw, and a somewhat large Roman nose. He always appeared elegant and dignified, sometimes appearing to be deep in thought. But his charm was immense, “His smile was extraordinarily attractive.” wrote an anonymous source. A writer in 1790 stated that it was not necessary to announce his name when he walked in a room - his appearance was so specific that everyone knew immediately who he was.
There are a few long standing myths about Washington’s appearance. The first is that he had wooden dentures - a myth that originated in the 1800s, possibly because Ivory dentures became easily stained. Washington’s fondness for drinking Port Wine was rumored to be a constant annoyance for his dentist who had to clean them.
Another misconception is that Washington always had white hair or wore wigs. Washington actually never wore wigs, preferring his natural hair styled in the fashion of the time, and sometimes powdered to appear white. In portraits of a younger Washington, his hair is a reddish brown. We actually have surviving locks of George Washington’s hair, which interestingly sell at auction for almost $25,000.
So I’ve used a bust of Washington created by Houdon as the basis for my re-creations.

@@janedarc7731 Washington did pull off some miracle escapes while leading the army & set the best example when he gave up power. To be fair to England, the British had made the Proclamation of 1763 to keep the colonists off of the Native's land. This also protected their fur trade. The British sent troops to America to make sure the Proclamation was followed, which they didn't really since they were stationed on the coast, and to serve as protection from Native attacks. England was broke after the war and they had the extra burden of housing, feeding, and paying for the troops in America. They thought the colonies should help pay down the war debt since the war benefited them. While England should've been able to handle the situation better over the next several years - America did overreact to some extent. They had conspiracy theories that the Stamp act (Townsend Acts, etc) was a sign that England was going to take their freedoms and make them slaves. Also, you have to remember that all colonies were founded with the economic theory of Mercantilism at that time. It states that the colonies exist for the benefit of the mother country. Colonists considered themselves British but they weren't at that point. America needed to be independent and without Washington, the revolution would have probably ended at the very start.

We still have men like Washington and the others. It's just that the country is so much larger and the times don't permit individuals to stand out as they did in pre-Revolutionary War days. Rest assured, the Patriots are here. We have a republic. We have a U.S. Constitution. Now, we must rebuild our institutions, our government, and our country. Decades of complacency and government officials in collusion with special interest groups have eroded the power of the people. We must take back that which was intended for us from the very beginning. We never thought a bunch of Marxists would be successful at infiltrating our country, from within, and destabilizing our republic. But, they have. It's up to us, now. We can be like the Founder and the many who fought to secure the country's freedom. We won't be on the money, or in the school books, and they won't build statues of us, but our job is no less important and the time is now.

If you do an on-line search for "George Washington's Revolutionary War Itinerary" you'll see a list of exactly where he was and when from 1775 to 1783. I was amazed the record still exists! And it's fascinating! By the way, the "George Washington slept here" is sometimes a little exaggeration. Frequently he just had his tent pitched on a particular property if the stay was going to be brief but only after getting permission from the property owner.

Well, of course, being an American, I’ve heard tons about George Washington, but I did not expect to be so moved by this. I think these individuals, that are incredibly historically important, that we learn so much about, tend to become dehumanized in a way. They’re larger than life to the point that I almost can’t even imagine that they were just like us. Could sound silly, but I really find it hard to picture them as human beings. The end hit me so hard, I just started crying. It reminds me that they were just like us, and we too can make our mark in some way. No matter how small it may seem.

Then as a portrait artist and sculptor, you really need to see Jean-August Houdon's ORIGINAL life cast of Washington's face to see how he altered it to become the false image we know today. This was a very common practice of the time: to re-imagine a famous person's face into an ideal and Washington was no exception to that rule, even to the point of one sculptor famously posing Washington as a Greek God (complete with an inaccurate toga) in a statue that stood under the Capitol dome for nearly a century. The fog was indeed supernatural intervention from Jesus. Washington was a devout Christian that prayed daily for guidance and protection. The Native Americans Washington battled called him the man that couldn't be shot because every bullet would seem to miss him as everyone and everything was shot around him, despite Washington being their main objective. Again, God's protection.

@@mnp7922 It’s absolutely horrible that anyone owned slaves or allowed anyone else to own them. So what do you propose? Remove our founding fathers from history books, even though life and society was completely different from what we know? Honestly, as a female, pretty much every generation of males until well into the 20th century treated females pretty atrociously, too, refusing to give them the most basic rights and basically giving men ownership over women, refusing them the right to own property, allowing men to physically abuse or rape their spouses, etc. That would include every founding father and most likely every president, inventor, businessman, clergyman, educator, etc. But I can still appreciate the positive things most of them did to make life and society better, regardless, despite how they were indoctrinated by every part and every level of society. If you and I were raised at that time in that environment (1700s), we would both be a lot more like them. And it makes me wonder how awful you and I will look to future generations who will be horrified by our behavior or acceptance of something we think is normal or tolerable that is imprinted in our brains because of where and when we were born. I think we need to learn about the people who were important in positively shaping society despite their handicap in being born at a time very unlike our own, especially when they chose to change things to make them better, anyway. Nothing wrong with teaching about how George Washington worked incredibly hard to gain our independence as a country and to shape our government and society into something better. Also nothing wrong with teaching that he, very unfortunately, also owned slaves and why.
@mkuti-childress3625
@mkuti-childress3625 Год назад
@@mnp7922 And by the way, please don’t minimize what women have been put through in _every_ generation in every country that ever existed on the planet for literally thousands of years. It isn’t a competition, and it isn’t wrong to discuss how bad it was and still is today. It doesn’t diminish the horrors of slavery, and it isn’t wrong to finally get people to think about the magnitude of injustice that half the population has suffered throughout humanity. Maybe your minimizing it is the reason people will think themselves morally superior to you in the future-or even the present. 🤷🏻
