While Hamilton has always been an important figure in U.S. history, his popularity in recent years has soared due to the musical, “Hamilton” finding tons of success. The real man behind the musical was one of stubborn idealism. Many of his ideas make up the framework for the current U.S. Constitution. But some of his other ideas were considered controversial, and he made a lot of enemies during his career in politics.
Additionally, what did Alexander Hamilton look like? There are dozens of depictions, but which one looks like the real man? At the end of the video, we will reveal our re-creations.

21:57 What did Hamilton look like?
25:03 Reconstructions Revealed
Narration & Art: Becca Segovia
Writing, Editing & Music Direction: Andre Segovia
Let’s start with what we know, based on the description of a close personal friend, William Sullivan:
He was short, about 5’7”, and thin. But he had a really strong and dignified presence that made him seem larger than life. While normally looking a bit serious, he had the kind of face that could easily break out into a smile - I love that the life portraits of Hamilton show these smile lines. Sullivan says he had a light complexion, with rosy cheeks, and an “uncommonly handsome face.”
His Grandson, Allan Hamilton, noted that His blue eyes were deep set above a strong Roman nose, and he had good bone structure, with a strong chin and jaw.
He also had reddish brown hair that he often wore powdered. In my depiction, I’m showing his natural hair color without powder to give an impression of the real man.
In terms of portraits, the paintings by John Trumbull are the ones that most of us probably recognize - he painted at least 17. However, all of these were painted from just 2 portrait studies made from life.
Now, portraiture from the 1700s is kind of like a game of telephone - the original likeness existed out there somewhere, but was copied over and over, with each copy losing something of the original.
This Trumbull portrait of Hamilton is probably one of the most famous, but the head was actually painted from a portrait bust made by John Jay, and then the body was completely invented. You can see how this doesn’t give much in the way of accuracy. Trumbull also painted this version - Hamilton’s biographer Gertrude Atherton referred to as the “fat boy” Trumbull. She said, “Had Hamilton looked like it he would have accomplished nothing.” Ouch, Gertrude.
Everyone in Hamilton’s life seemed to disagree about which likeness represented him the best.
Hamilton’s grandson said, the best likenesses were those by James Sharples. But then, Eliza Schuyler Hamilton, said the portrait painted in 1802 by Ezra Emes, was “perfect,”
And then Hamilton himself said the best likeness came from the profile-view portrait by William Joseph Weaver.
Since side-view images are difficult for me to work from, I’ve worked from this 1796 bust by Giuseppe Cerrachi, taken from life when Hamilton was 37 years old. It’s a really highly regarded likeness. Now, Ceracchi did work in the Roman tradition, so this potentially leans towards being a little stylized, but it’s easy to see how well this image matches with other portraits of the Founding Father, and the descriptions from Hamilton’s lifetime.

Well said. People are too complicated to designate them as either right or wrong. There is no absolute black and white, there are only shades of gray. And it's fascinating to look into the lives of these historical giants and try to understand the decisions they made, and why they made them.

I have to admit, I knew very little about Alexander Hamilton and the other founding fathers until I saw _Hamilton_ on Disney+. But the musical inspired me to look further into his life, to see what Lin Manuel Miranda got right, and what liberties were taken. And it's fascinating stuff! All of these men, the founding fathers, we now view them as historical heavyweights, they almost seem like giants... but they were _real men,_ making real decisions, solving real problems, and dealing with real feelings. There are a lot of videos and podcasts that dive into history, and I enjoy almost all of them. Yours is particularly fun, though, because it helps to humanize these names we've memorized, and to learn their stories. Thanks, Becca and team, you're amazing.
@caffeinatedhobgoblin

I love how Lin Manuel Miranda captured that humanity of our founding fathers! I couldn't agree more that we see these historical figures as giants, like they're some kind of god, but many don't stop enough to think they made mistakes just like us, they didn't know what they were doing, they were just doing their best even when they failed! Many problems they couldn't fix with the little time they had. I'm so happy channels like this exist to bring that further to the forefront.

I loved this video, and personally Alexander Hamilton is one of my favourite historical figures. I enjoy reading about how complicated he was and how many personal relationships as I think many of the people he formed friendships with were fascinating. Alexander’s mother Rachael and his sister-in-law Angelica Church and his best friend and likely lover Jack Laurens may be some of the people I think most interesting in his life. I think this video is great, but I did notice three mistakes in the video: - Rachael Fawcett was no longer married by 1765. Rachael and Johann Lavine got a divorce in 1759. This divorce trial had a great impact on Alexander’s life as it forbade Alexander and his older brother James Jr from inheriting anything upon their mother’s death and for it all to go to her eldest Peter Lavien. This divorce also forbade Rachael from remarrying, which resulted in her never being able to marry James Hamilton - James Hamilton was not the one showing off the letter Alexander wrote. Alexander showed the letter to his mentor Hugh Knox, who was so impressed by the letter that he published it. It was from this Knox helped gather him up a collection, and Alexander ended up in America - Alexander’s published document on the character and conduct of John Adams, where he calls him too emotional and criticises his temper tantrums, was published during the Election of 1800 to prevent Adams from becoming president again, not during Adams first election I do like your recreation a lot. I think Alexander Hamilton must have had a difficult face to capture based on his differing descriptions and portraits. He must have been a good looking based on his descriptions with lovely violet-blue eyes and a nice smile. By a quite few, such as John Adams and William Sullivan and himself in one letter to Jack Laurens, he’s called feminine, sometimes by his looks and his personality. I always imagined him being a bit more of a ‘pretty boy’ based on his descriptions. Allan McLane Hamilton evidently didn’t like any of Alexander’s portraits, calling them “not artistically remarkable, and most of them evidently unreliable, very little impression is to be gained of his figure or how he actually looked, repose or when animated.” Overall I did think this video was a good summary of his life though I do wish you gave Jack a little bit of a mention considering that most historians have agreed that Alexander was never quite the same after he died. I’m sorry if this comment is a little long and a bit of a rant. I love this video, and I love Alexander Hamilton as a historical figure.

Great work, as always! And this shows how important meritocracy is. Hamilton was born out of wedlock, yet was able to rise through the ranks both academically and in the army, almost to presidency, based on skill alone (though the patronage of his aristocratic father and later friendship with Washington probably also helped). This was an advantage the Colonies/US had over the "Old World" - in England back then, officer commissions in the Army were often bought for upper class sons who didn't stand to inherit land. Someone from the lower classes could never become an officer. A talent like Hamilton would have been completely missed, and guess which kind of army ends up the most competent one?? Which probably contributed to the victory of the Americans over the English.
@jordansjul

His mother, Rachel, lived on St. Croix. In our history books her husband, Lavien, is described as cruel. He even had Rachel jailed for refusing to live with him and having flirtatious behavior. So she hopped a ship to St. Kitts and made a home in Nevis. Later, James moved them back to St. Croix. The building where the shop Rachel owned is still there, 34 Company St. Hamilton lived 8 years in St. Croix were he witnessed the Sunday Free Market and learned about international trade and commerce. His time in St. Croix help to form his social and economical ideals.

Just the story of Hamilton's rivalry with Burr, much less why he went ahead with the duel after losing a beloved son to one and experiencing the devastating effects on himself and his family, would take up all your presentation time! I suppose he must have believed nothing else he'd done would matter if he didn't duel. He was a fascinating person. Was any other Founding Father born a foreign national? Did any of them have the kind of experience Hamilton had in international trade and finance and practical money management for governments? Few, if any. How many of the others could have his unique vision for the nation because he wasn't born in or raised in any state? It's easy to forget that, like his mentor, George Washington, Hamilton had to create a whole department of the federal government and establish the financial and economic foundations of a new republic--very different from other forms of government--largely from scratch and without many close precedents to look to. Sometimes the outliers have something to offer, I guess! Good work! The recreation was great!

Mr. Hamilton figures so prevalently in our nation's depictions because he was staggeringly handsome. (My American History instructor had the fiercest crush on him, and it was 1989!) Who wouldn't want to sculpt the current sexiest man alive? But his contemporaries said he had little time for such frippery, stunk like a wild animal and had to be forcibly bathed and shoved into a clean suit when he ripened beyond endurance. I suppose it also rankled the old coots that the babes of the day were undeterred by neither the honk coming off him nor the dirt rings around his neck.

Perhaps a combination of Heath Leger, Alexander Skarsgard, and David Beckham, all very handsome men. Thanks for another great portrayal of historical figures!

I’m impressed. However, what I found most poignant is the amount of pain these two brothers endured. Even on a bad day, our lives don’t compare with those of our forefathers. What ever happened to Alexander Hamilton’s brother whom he needed to leave behind? We talk about complex PTSD. Both Alexander and his brother would qualify.

I'm glad to know about Alexander's parents and that his father didn't abandon him. In fact, there was a letter from Alexander to his brother James asking about his father.
