If you purchase or inherit a vehicle with a missing, stolen, or defective title, you are required by the state of Georgia to get a bonded title. A title bond is an agreement between the applicant, the Georgia Department of Revenue’s Motor Vehicle Division and the surety.
It provides the security of a vehicle title, essentially acting as a guarantee that the vehicle is legitimately owned by you. The process of obtaining a bonded title can be summed up in five steps.
Contact the Georgia Department of Revenue to confirm you are eligible for a bonded title. Only legal residents of Georgia whose vehicle model year is more recent than 1985 and requires a new Georgia title can qualify. Bonded titles are not issued for abandoned vehicles.
Ask the Department about the value of your vehicle in order to determine your bond amount. The amount will always be twice the value of the vehicle being titled. For example, vehicle owner Vicky’s appraisal is $3,000. Because the bond amount is double the value of the vehicle, she will need a $6,000 bond. The minimum bond amount in Georgia is $5,000.
