Earthship Simple Survival 4 U Model.
I recently helped on an Earthship build in Georgia. The homeowner attended the Earthship Biotecture academy and spent five years building this 4 U Simple Survival Model. They hired a crew of 5 from Earthship Biotecture in Taos to come help enclose and finish the slab roof. Many others came to help for a day or more and this video is a compilation of my time spent working on it. It was fun to be part of a team effort and see the progress we made everyday. It had been many years since my Earthship Biotecture internship and subsequent volunteer on a build in Colorado (video link below), but I had generous and patient teachers. I car camped on location and everyday I enjoyed the simplicity of waking up in my van, pulling on the same mud-caked carhartts, and walking the 50 yards to the build site.

I have been a proponent of alternative building styles since the 1970s. I love domes of every type from those that require all kinds of mathematics in order to cut and put together one size or another, with or without knee-walls. I love the look of rammed Earth homes that are similar in make up to the hundreds of year-old pueblos in the southwest. Cal-Earth's sand-bag homes are also really cool and then there are the "ceramic homes" that are made of an adobe mud and then fired similar to pottery in a kiln except the fire in inside the completed structure. Thin shelled ferrocement utilizes a technique that made ships that were nearly unsinkable back in the day and in the case of the monolithic dome, Eye of the Storm and the "air balloon" technique, thin-shell concrete can create a structure that has withstood hurricanes. I mention all of this (and beleve me, I have more styles I could talk about) because the ONE THING never mentioned is HOW TO GET CITY/COUNTY APPROVALS AND PERMITS to build an Earthship. I heard the desert ones the guy who started them out there was able to get a variance by designating EACH HOME A WASTE DUMP SITE! So...I'd love to hear about permits and all that...

Sorry, I do not know anything about permitting. That would be a question for Earthship Biotecture.

Agreed.. the info on how to permit where these things have been done sure would help... I can't remember the source for sure but I believe it was through the originators of the Earthships website said that one might have to be the first to go through all the hurdles... I live in N.GA.. think about putting a root cellar kind of hut in our hillside.. do I need a permit for it?? And if I don't get one, what is my liability with it? Love the cob material construction. Those other cement like materials you mention sound really good.. anything that stops the bugs and insulates great is a huge win imo!!!!
