Ray Charles' approach of blending blues, gospel, soul, and jazz into something uniquely inspired and authentic has always inspired me. Every recording he's made is a masterclass in vocal inflection, and studying his vocal lines, vibrato, note bending, and rhythms is some of the best blues practice anyone could get. I've gotten a lot of requests for this tune, and other Ray Charles tunes lately... so here you go!
I tried a few guitars to see which one had the right voice for this song, and the ‪@MuleResonatorGuitars‬ "Mavis" stood out to me. Unplugged it sounds like a mix between a banjo and a resonator guitar, but once you plug it in, it has a surprisingly mellow, jazzy tone. The blend between the two tones is something I haven't heard with any other guitar.

Hey Sam Stamos. I agree sir. I only a karaoke singer at some dive bars in rural Oklahoma. And many times, when I sing I cry too. But I always think of Ray and I get thru the song. Then go outside in the parkin lot and finish up the cryin till its my turn again to sing. Bless ya my brother. U hit the ole nail on the head.

As a lifelong Georgian, this song has special meaning. Whether it’s Ray Charles’s original version or Doc Severinson’s awesome trumpet rendition, I never get tired of it. Justin has made one more version that has already become a favorite. Thank you Justin, you are an amazing talent.

Florida son here, born & raised…. Florida is purgatory, eh? Well, living in purgatory would be how we Floridians describe having to deal with folks from other States coming to live in our beautiful State! If it’s such a living hell, why don’t ya just move?? Damn, dude…it’s an easy fix. (Yes, these remarks are to be taken “with a grain of salt”. Florida does have some fucked up parts to it….but, then again, every damn State does!)

I used to live in Georgia. I'm a southern Ohio gal. Going down into The South is like going back in time. Yeah Georgia is that backward. I love so much about the state, but I'm too progressive for the majority of Georgians. I was raised to be a real person. I can't do fake nice. I'm not implying that we don't have them up here, we sure do. The only difference is that they're not the majority up here and we don't all bow to the church up here. I'm not even going to go into the racism. Nope I met a lot of good people down there, but they're definitely the minority. It's sad. Such a beautiful area and most people will never see it because they can't deal with the ignorance and meanness.

I love FL and I really enjoyed my time in Georgia great people !!! but I get it if someone don't like Florida take the interstate North and get the hell out !!! I guess you live in south Florida because we don't get to many people complaining about it here !! pretty quiet town here

@@brianstevens3963 Hey, I’m an Army vet myself! Only spent 8 years in though. Nope, I’m actually from Central Florida! Dead center of Florida, to be exact. About a hour from both coasts, about a hour north of Orlando/Disney, and about a hour south of the Ocala National Forest. 😁 Haven’t spent any time in the other parts…lol. I don’t have anything against Georgia, at all, I just love my Florida. Even the fucked up parts. The only thing I hate about Georgia…is how damn long it takes to drive through it from north to south when traveling to visit family down there, etc.

Thank you so much Justin! I’m sitting here tears in my eyes drinking my morning coffee, reminiscing. Thinking of all those times deployed around the world, I’d listen to this song. Being from Ga it has a special place brings me comfort, hope and beauty. It always moved my mind away from the world and back home. Today as I listen, it takes me back there joking with my good friend and brother, I can see the smile on his face, another Georgia boy. I love seeing that smile specially today as we lay him to rest.

When I was 14th, 45 years ago, my guitar teacher always told me "Keep that f....g thumb down!!!!". But I've always used it in this way, for playing the bass on the 6th string. And now I can say at him: "Keep YOUR f.....g thumb down and stick it into your back" 😀 Thanks for the very useful tips on finger picking, and thanks for the many many hours with me listening for your great interpretations of great never ending music!!! I found a guitar in the garbage right around the time the pandemic hit. While I was looking up guitar tutorials for beginners I got other guitar content recommended and this man has been a continuous inspiration.
