Georgian Railway Review (Tbilisi Central to Tbilisi Airport) - The Worst Train in Europe?

Hello, welcome to a very exciting video! For this train trip report, I am in Georgia, at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, near to the Caucasus Mountains.
On this trip I used a few particularly dubious trains, including this ER2 electric unit, which I believe could well be the worst train in Europe! Admittedly the ticket did only cost 13p, but it was still a comical journey to undertake.
The ER2 is a very abundant train, around the former Soviet Union, but also with derivatives seeing use within the Balkans. They were all built in Riga, Latvia. With such a diverse range of places they serve, many have received some strange modifications, but some are largely untouched since they began service all those many years ago... This example (ER2-631) is one of the untouched examples, with much evidence to prove that to the passengers.
See why I think this train could be the 'Worst Train in Europe' in this video, it's an interesting experience for sure!
Note: Sorry for the poor camerawork on this one, Georgia is quite a bit further than anywhere else I have been, and I wasn't sure how they would react to filming. The neighbouring country of Azerbaijan had a large objection to my attempts at photography and filming, so I tried to play it safe. Hope you enjoy my efforts anyway! :)

they were heavily re-vamped already under the new government... Tallinn Kaunas and Riga depos all mended there stock thoroughly as part of an EU eco-transport support package/credit program, effectively little of the old structure was left in place except for the solid-framework and chassis. Tbilisi did not get the chance to do it for many of their trains... the original thought was that a Skoda-built electro-railbus would be used for the track (something similar to a halfway house between the British pacer & sprinter) but, though made common elsewhere, it was found to be a little too low capacity for the peak season, and since it needed rewiring the infrastructure to run, it was decided the conventional service would be kept

That's weird, they replaced sliding doors inside of those cars with regular ones and put seats in 2+3 configuration instead of regular 3+3 without switching their type to a more comfortable one. Toilets are just as disgusting as in default ER2 and ED4 trains though. And my guess is they are constantly stinky there as well

Wow! Amazing! I should think that a lot of the ex-Soviet republics which have had a major fall-out with their former occupiers will find it extremely difficult to source spares for their older trains. The general state of the roads, buildings, etc. would seem to indicate that Georgia had a fairly fragile economy, even before the advent of Covid-19.
@SuperalbsTravels
@SuperalbsTravels 4 года назад
They have an interesting solution to spare parts! Judging by the state of some units, I don't think they really have a maintenance pool as such. I think once a part breaks, they just replace it with whatever they can find. This does lead to some units looking rather odd. Compare these three, they are the same type of train: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/2f/Georgian_Railways_ER2_Class_at_Tbilisi.jpg/1280px-Georgian_Railways_ER2_Class_at_Tbilisi.jpg upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/c1/Georgian_Railways_ER2M_Class_at_Tbilisi.jpg/1280px-Georgian_Railways_ER2M_Class_at_Tbilisi.jpg upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/5/58/Georgian_Railway_ES_Class_at_Tbilisi_1.jpg/1280px-Georgian_Railway_ES_Class_at_Tbilisi_1.jpg There also exist more designs of this same train. The ER2 trains sound like the old LMS multiple units on the Euston-Watford line. They originally had wooden seats, probably. Though gradually disappearing they are all over the former Soviet Union though this one seems to be in a bad state. The windows look as if they have been changed as you can see through the glass. The basic concept of a monocoque body with a pair of pocketed sliding doors at each end was quite a good one. The better ones are not so much worse than the BR class 455.

It's easy to mock these trains but I remember travelling on French regional trains in the North of the country 20 years ago. Everyone in the UK would point to the TGVs and say "French trains are wonderful." when in fact these regional trains were appalling and had so much graffiti you were lucky if you could see out the windows and if you could you'd see dilapidated stations with roped off sections because the buildings were literally crumbling with masonry falling onto the platforms.

The French network is certainly in an unfortunate state in many places. Though, Georgia has some good trains too, I was unable to travel on them during this trip. A massive regret, and part of the reason why I'll be making a prompt return, when I can.

Greetings from Russia. This video made me laughing for at least 5 minutes. We had those ER trains as an airport express too in early 2000's and as suburban trans. But I've never seen them being so badly maintained (maybe in very early 90's only). Nowadays almost all the ER trains are gone replaced by Siemens Desiro/Stadler KISS or ED4M/EP2D (locally built) EMUs. Those EMUs turned to be very reliable and easy to maintain. The problem is to find finances, that's why you can find the EMUs that destroyed in Georgia or Ukraine.

They were in their 20s. When my colleague - who was 60 years old - realized he grabbed the taxi driver by the neck from the back seat and started screaming at him...... the scammers appeared to come close to sh*tting themselves and took us straight to our destination; the airport. As we arrived there was a Police car parked up and my colleage said to the taxi drivers, "wait here, I'm getting those Police". At which point the scammers said, "There is no fare. It's for free. Thank you" and sped off. A slightly stressful experience but saved us around £6 on the taxi. :o)

It's difficult to tell! In Georgia, not one pair of units is the same, they are all different to one another in some manner. I can only guess that the top speed is 60mph, as that is what Wikipedia claims the top-speed to be since January 2008. That same article suggests that 80mph was once achieved in the past though. Whatever it is, we didn't see much above 30mph in this video, at a guess!

Latvian ER2 trains (in a way these are too because they're all built in Riga, but I mean those running in Latvia) probably have a top speed of 130kmh, but they rarely accelerate up to 100 as they are commuter trains with really bad acceleration. Our trains are however well kept and worlds apart from these, despite similar age.

@@SuperalbsTravelsMaybe the worst European train was the Black Train in Hungary. It was a weekly worker's train from Budapest to the east side of the country and back. Overcrowded, crime, alcohol, stabbing and other fine things. Six hours travel for 240 kilometers, a real East-European fun... Sorry for my bad English. Here some thoughts 1.The train station from departing looks old, the government should fix it 2.Its quite reliable train for over 10 years old i think? 3.Let me guess the 2508 km sign was made during soviet times, am I right? 3.the toilet is absolutely disgusting 4.I find it weird that the shops looks modern while the train station looks old 5 . how do you get to Georgia, while previously you were on europe? That's all. Thank you
@SuperalbsTravels

1. It's quite modern inside, but the platforms need work! 2. Yes, at least it moved, which was good. It's nearly 60 years old! :( 3. Probably! Other 3. Yes, it was awful. :( I gagged! 4. I guess it makes more money... 5. Sadly I had to fly, from Italy, but it was a good deal. Just £25!
