Legendary soprano Geraldine Farrar (1882-1967) sings Marguerite's aria "Ah! Je ris de me voir si belle en ce miroir" or the "Jewel Song" from Gounod's Faust. Recorded 1913. Unlike many other sopranos of her era Farrar's voice recorded very well, as you can hear in this example.

Wow! She really went for those high notes without any fear! And, absolutely flawless vocal technique! Thank you so much for posting this 'jewel!" Susan

Such a crystal clear, lovely voice. Just like a bell ringing on those high notes.

There are NO SNGERS TODAY. ALL of them are yelling and covering the tones and eventually end with a Wobble.Farrar represents the technique taught to singers of that era, Spontaneity and brilliance. being the Hallmark of great singers.

Here Geraldine shows why she was so popular.

Thanks for posting this. Amazing how dark she sings for a lyric, compared to those today. She does not lighten as she ascends, but rather keeps the sound full and dark. Chiaroscuro!

I only hear clear round and full. I think dark is a subjective term. I do agree with chiaroscuro though.

This is very beautifully sung. The opening trill and those runs are terrific! What happened to technique since then? So many don't/can't measure up to this. I'm going to have to aquire more of this woman's recordings.

Lovely recording! Whenever I hear this aria I am reminded of the fictional opera diva Bianca Castafiore of the Tintin cartoon adventures. It was her number one song as far as I remember :D

This is superb! I'm not a fan of Farrar as Carmen (too rushed IMHO), but her voice shines as Marguerite

Don't forget that tempi were often rushed on every per-electrical record because of time limits on the wax discs. How great artists sang things for recordings and in the theater were often very different.

@@Ruffiello Indeed, unless time machines are invented for real, the best we have are these ancient discs for the voices of "Golden Age" singers.

Speeds are usually chosen by the conductor, not the singer.
