Always captivated by her mannerisms, cadence of speech and a strange childlike innocence. She is undeniable honest and true talent. I so appreciate that she aged naturally.
When Ms Page won the Academy Award in 1986(for the 1985 film Best Actress for The Trip To Bountiful)the presenter F. Murray Abraham said, The winner is a woman whom I consider the greatest actress in the English language: GERALDINE PAGE!!
Interestingly, Page died of a heart attack in the early hours of June 13, 1987, having very likely read about her friend Elizabeth Hartman's tragic suicide in the New York Time only some hours before, where Hartman's obituary had been published on June 12th. They had appeared in two film productions together (Don Siegel's The Beguiled, and the 1973 film Walking Tall), and were were supposed to appear in a third.
The circumstances of her personal life at the time were especially heartbreaking. She was just a year removed from winning an Oscar, performing in a posthumously Tony award nominated role on Broadway, and less than three months away from her 25th wedding anniversary. Unfortunately her husband had different plans for his life at that time, as in taking up with a much younger woman and fathering a child with her, and she died alone in her townhouse.
She is a natural actor/artist. None of the artificiality, trappings, and pretense that some many "stars" fall prey to in Hollywood. She is an artist, not merely a"star."
One of the greatest actresses America has ever produced. She didn't make a great many films because she preferred the stage. So many wonderful performances.
She made many odd choices that frustrated her agent. Who's Afraid if Virginia Woolf, The Night of the Iguana imagine those with her? She was wonderful, but a bit nutty. Right?????
"She didn't make a great many movies"??? Are you kidding? She received 8 Oscar nominations over 4 decades. A stage actress who did few movies was Kim Stanley.
I've always been fascinated with her acting. The way she touches her face and looks at you out of the corners of her eyes. All her charactors in movies do the same things. It brings such a realness to the charactor.
I completed a bucket list project this year, watching all 8 of her Oscar nominated performances . Even in small roles like “The Pope of Greenwich Village”, she killed. My least favorite was “You’re A Big Boy Now”; and the best IMO was Woody Allen’s “Interiors”.
I’ve never even heard about Geraldine Page before, all I knew is that she won the Best actress Oscar over Whoopi Goldberg. Now I’m a fan and aspire even a bit of talented than she was.
her body of work speaks for itself. a true chameleon…. evie in dear heart, alexandra in sweet bird, the eccentric cousin in a christmas memory, carrie watts in the trip to bountiful, to name just a handful. it is hard to believe it is the same actress in each of those rolls. she immersed herself into each character. she wasn’t a star but she was the consummate actor. i wish she was better remembered today.
Never knew she was a hip person style-wise! Her characters were always conservative middle-aged ladies, or eccentric socialites, and whatnot. Here her hair relaxed, in a peasant blouse, and those oh so huge sunnies! Stellar woman!
Ms. Page! So many great times in the theatre- Agnes Of God, Absurd Person Singular, A Lie of the Mind and film moments in The Trip to Bountiful and maybe my favorite, Whatever Happened to Aunt Alice?
Eccentric seems a little derogatory, Geraldine Page is definitely quirky and girlish..: she would have been amazing to have dinner with! What an amazing actress too!
One unique, stand out actress.Interesting to see her out of character and speaking so relaxed vs. her many over- the-top, dramatic rolls. Her passing at age 62 was tragic. Far too young.
I fell in love with her at a young age watching her as the evil Mrs. Marrable in Whatever Happened to Aunt Alice and then followed her career ever since! This interview is incredible! She's so open and honest in this interview!!! I bet she was great to know in person!!!
Priceless interview. Even the great Geraldine Page says, "...I've never talked about this..." All credit due to the interviewer. Tom Cottle is better than Charlie Rose-he is probing, yet empathetic; and doesn't interrupt his guest. He knows we want to hear from the star, and he doesn't think HE is the star. He's as interested in the star as his audience. Thank you to whoever posted this. Great actress. Great interview.
@@VW613she very much knew and was even asked about it in an interview once after the child was born, saying that they weren't going to get divorced. It's sad that she was less than three months away from her 25th wedding anniversary and died alone in her townhouse. One imagines that if he had decided not to step out, he could have been there, and even if there was nothing to do, at least she would have had someone with her at the end.
Yes...she does...have a shyness and bashfullness about her..being an actress brings out her hidden confidence and talent....feminine and lady..like..rare today..
I have never ever seen the actress who voiced one of the best Disney villains, Madame Medusa from The Rescuers until I saw this interview. You'd never guess by seeing this. What a fantastic choice.
Thank you so much for sharing this interview with us. Geraldine Page was, is and will always be my favourite actress ❤. I am still waiting on someone to write a biography of her. I remember her daughter saying she was in the process of writing it but nothing came of it.
She did create a stage production in which she played her mother in something of a one-woman show. She also maintains a Facebook page in which she shares details of her mother's life.
So magnificent! Tammy Grimes, Geraldine Page, Julie Harris...a few of them. Great, great, great. Actually Stockard Channing is in this tradition. Anyway, the year Page was nominated for an Oscar I saw her in E. J. Corvette. I do not recall what I was dong there but SHE was shopping for a fur stole (nice but cheap) as she intended upon attending the Oscar ceremonies. I can recall seeing her sweep through the store..sweep through it....asking the sales team to lay out the stoles so she could see the pelts and make a calculated decision. It was so great being a fly on the wall and observing this great actress without being noticed. One of the finest..America`s very best!!!
America has sold out to junk. Mainly because I think many like Biden (and the cartel parasites living off the USA) have Big Big interests in CHINA. WE pay the price!
For a woman of her age she had such a vibrant youthful humor that was not frayed or eroded with age or time....she appears to be what I imagine classical American women of the founding fathers behaved as and looked like with their gentle smiling faces and unpretentious-beauty.
Love this lady of the Theater, Film and Television. Yes, "Agnes of God" did appear in Louisville long before it got to Broadway. People should realize what a great Theater city Louisville is, especially Tony winning Actors Theater of Louisville. A great city for all the Arts.
She sometimes would be interviewed by TV stations in the New York area during the seventies and eighties, with and without Rip Torn. I wish some of those would re-emerge, hopefully they were recorded. I always thought she was very likeable. She had a girlish quality, and seems hippie-like. No wonder she liked the sixties! But it does seem unbelievable she would be gone in only four years. What a loss 😔
Man when it comes to actresses i dont have enough words to describe how fabulous Geraldine Page was. The scene in "" The Pope of Greenwich Village "" those cops from internal affair come in to talk and she is smoking that cigarette and has her Rosaries and tell them off, for me one of the Greatest little scenes in movies.
How ironic that she won her Oscar over the actress ( Anne Bancroft) who played the same role in the movie ‘Agnes of God ‘ that Geraldine played in the Broadway play. Also interesting that she mentioned the word Bountiful in conversation (5:38). Wonder if that was purely coincidental or maybe the movie ‘ The Trip to Bountiful’ was already in production.
She is so charming woman, that smile....her mannerism, everything about her. You could easily fall in love with her. Gone too soon. RIP Geraldine, you were one of the kind in every sense.
As a child, she was the first person I noticed as an actor. I noticed her performance, in a very positive and awe inspired way. As an adult, I found Phillip Seymour Hoffman comparable.
It`s funny cause I too was a bit of a mouse in high school. All I can say is this: the kind of guys who fell for me then are fairly different from the guys who fall for me now.Just shows to go you..there is always someone for everyone.
It's hard to watch this and know she died only 4 years later. I just love her and would have loved to have known her. While watching this I could not help but think of Little Edie Beale.
