I don't mind that The Color Purple lost 11 Oscars because IMO only the soundtrack, the cinematography, and Whoopi were contenders out of any of its nominations. However, Out of Africa? That movie was so 1980s Oscar fare and NOT in a good way. It makes Green Book's win much better in comparison and I hated Green Book's win over the likes of so many more worthy films including but not limited to Blackkklansman. I use Blackkklansman as an example because to me, it was like the complete opposite of what Green Book was about and much more on point than Green Book regarding America and racial relations. The only saving grace of Green Book winning was that it stopped 4-time Oscar winner and absolutely horrible movie Bohemian Rhapsody from winning. I was seriously getting scared about that winning after it won it's 4th Oscar of the night.

@SabrinaRina
@SabrinaRina 4 года назад
@The Pasty British Guy From Wonderwoman I'm saying the general chain of people not getting for one performance really deserving and sometimes getting it for a less deserving later on. Directors or actors (most other categories don't get this unless it's more about rewarding a director or actor). Not just this particular.
@leahjurgens2657
@leahjurgens2657 4 года назад
Again with this same logic. Even though I don't wholeheartedly agree with overdue Oscar, I think part of the reasons is because they at least gave win worthy performances several times in the past. For example, Geraldine should have won for Sweet bird of youth, Interiors and Pope of Greenwich. Likewise, Close should have won for Garp, Fatal attraction and Dangerous liaisons. There have been atrocious wins in the past, so why not give these proven talented actress award recognition at last? On the other hand, winning an Oscar so early in the does not always guarantee a fantastic career (Halle Berry, Hilary Swank,etc) so an Oscar in this case can be a waste. Also as the above user suggest, lifetime achievement award is basically "we know you are about to die but we won't forget you" award and it would be unfair to those excellent actors not getting proper recognition (believe me but this phenomenon is much more common than you are indicating here)

Most people who claim that Goldberg deserved it never watched The Trip to Bountiful. That's because The Color Purple had much bigger and powerful people behind it to keep it going. The Trip to Bountiful was a small independent film based on an Off-Broadway play. Of course it couldn't compete against the likes of Spielberg and Quincy Jones and Alice Walker. The Trip to Bountiful still had legs though as it was revived on Broadway with Cicely Tyson who won a Tony Award for it which inspired a tv movie adaptation where Tyson was nominated for an Emmy. I swear, people like David v. Goliath stories, but only selectively. Here, The Color Purple is Goliath. Anyway, I think those black critics who didn't like The Color Purple were right on the money. It took a great book and turned it into a sentimental immature cartoon. Only Goldberg's performance saved it.

@@AllGreyEverything I don't think Prizzi's Honor was a classic or anything, but it was a whole lot better than The Color Purple. Anjelica Huston's win was backed up but hundreds of critics awards who awarded her prior to the Oscars. I admit, I watched all of the Best Supporting Actress nominees from that year and at first I was like "that's all the screen time she had?" expected a much more boisterous performance for all the awards she won that year for it. But then out of all the nominees, Huston's performance was the one that stayed with me the most. I still don't know why, but it did. Maybe it was John Huston's masterful directing and the way he lit her. I think Huston captured his daughter better than Spielberg did with both Avery and Oprah (who IMO I still don't think did that great of an acting job. Provided very little nuance or subtext to the character of Sophia).

J S Cicely Tyson still talks about Geraldine Page's magnificent performance in that film. Cicely, after she saw the film, wanted to do a film and role like that of Geraldine Page's and she did that on Broadway by playing the same character in it's stage version. Geraldine Page is a very underrated actress and that's why nobody talks about her. She was a character actress and not a Box Office Star with blockbusters to her credit. While Whoopi is always on TV and black people are always playing victim/whining about this film. Outside US, nobody gives a fuck about Color Purple.

There will always be a dark cloud over the Oscar for shutting out "The Color Purple". It made no sense then and it makes no sense now, especially since TCP has GROWN and has become apart of America's heritage and most classic films in the same way as "Gone With The Wind". G. Page put in a great performance for "The Trip to Bountiful" but W. Goldberg's performance was greater and definitely more memorable. G. Page died 2 years after her win, so I am not as hostile about her win. I can think of two other films of when G. Page should have won an Oscar but not for this win. The fact Hollywood doesn't like to talk too much about 1986's Oscar these days is proof they know they messed up and it will forever be a black eye on it's legacy.

I saw both films. A Trip To Bountiful was a good movie. I totally enjoyed watching it, but I forgot about it within a week. The Color Purple grabbed my attention from the first scene of those two girls walking through that field of flowers and held it in an iron grip up to their reunion at the end. To my mind, the most powerful line in the history of movies is the one spoken by Oprah Winfrey: "Get my children out of here. Don't let them see this." I probably misquoted it, but the meaning is stuck in my memory like a white hot brand. We don't actually have to see what is going to happen and we don't, but everybody who lived in the time of the KKK knew what she was saying. I was a white man from Ohio, but I knew. Whoopi Goldberg, Oprah, Winfrey, and the rest of the Cast, along with Steven Spielberg produce a truly Iconic bomb of a picture that deserves to stand alongside Grapes of Wrath as the greatest plea for social justice in movie history.

I'm going to show my age here. I remember seeing "The Color Purple" with my entire college English class. My white college professor adored the book, so she could not wait to see it herself. At our next class, we discussed what we all thought of the movie. Never before have I ever seen any movie polarize so many people. The white guys hated it. This is NOT Spielberg they griped. No sharks, aliens or bullwhips! The white girls loved it. So touching, so sweet! Then we had the black students... the black males hated it because black men were portrayed in such a negative light. As for the black females, you can guess the obvious. They absolutely loved it and couldn't wait to see it again. And as for my professor, she though it strayed too far from the source material being the book itself and put the blame right in Spielberg's lap. One more thing: how anyone can say that Streep didn't offer the best performance that year with a straight face is beyond me. Expected standards be damned.

@@mgeek1 I went to the Rose Parade on a Road Scholar program in 2020 and when asked his favorite movie our guide said 'Out of Africa'. (My favorite is of course 'The Godfather'.) However another romantic favorite is 'Isadora', 1969, with Vanessa Redgrave, which no one ever talks about either; could it be her politics?

@@Pistolwhipperz Opportunity usually goes hand in hand with genuine talent, tho. Meryl actually won no fewer than 2 Oscars before Miramax actually was founded.

loved this video, I loved Geraldine in interiors, and this made me decide to watch a Trip to Bountiful more! she si an amazing actress. What about doing a video on more recent winners, like Lupita Nyongo who won on her first film but has failed to do any recognizable work or Julianne Moore who was nominated 5 times before winning?

“I received a lovely note of congratulations from Miss Crawford,” said nominee Geraldine Page. “And then she called me. I was tongue-tied, very intimidated in talking with her. To me she was the epitome of a movie star. I always loved her movies . . . All I could manage was, “Yes, Miss Crawford. No, Miss Crawford.’ When she mentioned about accepting the Oscar for me if I won, I said yes. Actually I was relieved. That meant I wouldn’t have to fly all the way to California, or spend a lot of time looking for a new dress to wear. I was happy and honored that Joan Crawford would be doing all of that for me.” -Geraldine Page

Always a great day when Be Kind Rewind uploads a video! Wow, Out of Africa won over The Color Purple for Best Picture?! Yes, Meryl Streep is always amazing and the cinematography was wonderful, but Color Purple made me feel A LOT more than Out of Africa did. The end there when they're reunited... Celie: "NettIIIIIIIIEEEEE!!!" Nettie: "ceeeeelie..." (she can't even call out due to the emotion) I'm getting all misty just typing this out!

I'm of the mindset that realistically if Out of Africa didn't win, Witness would have.

The NAACP was so hypocritical about “The Color Purple.” When it came out, the organization complained that it portrayed black men as violent toward women. Then the group publicly railed against the Oscar losses. What’s the happy medium? 🤷🏽‍♂️

I remember watching The Trip to Bountiful on TV on my Summer vacation about 22 years ago. It's one of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen. Even though I never rewatched it, I never forgot the story... and Geraldine Page's character reminds me so much of my deceased grandmother, her strength of will, traveling alone all those miles just to see her old home one last time. That's the only reason we never tried, I mean, we tried, but we never made my grandma come live with us in the city. She'd be miserable outside her village. When she came to our home on my Xmas vacation, she couldn't wait to leave and see her chickens, take care of her garden... The Trip to Bountiful will always be one of the most special movies I've ever seen. Having said that (I always laugh at this expression), Whoopi should've won best actress, The Color Purple should've won best picture. I've never watched Out of Africa and I can't STAND IT! You know those movie you know you don't need to watch to know you won't stand? Just reading the synopsis is enough? That's what Out of Africa is to me. Schmaltzy romance is just not my thing... Same thing with The English Patient. Tried to watch it, felt like Elaine Benes screaming at Ralph Finnes to just die already 5 minutes in!

I think I spotted little Angelina Jolie at 17:19 (back to the camera applauding Ms. Page) ...Oh, and somebody named John Voight too.

She should have won for "Sweet Bird of Youth", hands down. But I totes agree that "The Color Purple" lose was cleary race/color driven. For this Oscar year, Whoopi made a change and it was her night. Geraldine, like we all know, won for her long overdue nominatios. Hollywood politics
