Ok, I admit I ramble a bit with this one but I unbox and take a look at the Gerber Slimsada and think about those high value, low cost mass produced blades out there.
I saw that sale, like $22 for the Slimsada. A lot of knife for the money. Ironically I cut my thumb on it not to long ago opening it. A bit of a different opening motion than with thumb studs.
The Slimsada does seem like a good value and that is of my favorite blade profiles. I have some old Gerber’s from when they were made in Oregon so I’ve had a pretty good experience with them despite their brand’s reputation being low (at least that is the general sentiment I get). Thanks for the video, Mtnboy.
Yes, all of these knife reviews should have a cost benefit analysis. Especially with their Chinese mfg items, it seems like Gerber will go a lot closer to their cost in a sales price rather than wholesale. Probably at that point it is a lost leader and they are hoping you pick up some other full priced items. They also, do this with the large knife retailers who also use them as "daily specials" or other types of lost leaders. I'd love to see a per unit cost vs. wholesale cost vs. MSRP breakdown.
Oh yeah, Gerber does still make some knife lines in Portland (Gator I think) but I wonder how much of this work is assembly of overseas materials vs. full manufacturing. When I see a "USA Made" knife with a traditionally Chinese steel I got to wonder.
