Nice. Sierra Trading was selling the women’s version for $75 for a while last year. Great site to watch especially now that MR is launching a bunch of new products.
For the water bottle holder on the chest strap, you could get a slightly taller water bottle or stuff something soft at the bottom of the pocket to keep it from slipping down. A small sock or hand towel maybe.
Maybe, I tried a tall slim bottle and it is challenging to get in and out due to position on chest. I prefer an adjustable pocket to mount to the shoulder strap or a canted waist holster for a bottle. I'm building a new pack from a MR Septer with a 3L hydration bladder and a should strap wingman for small Nalgene with drink mix. cheers
Yeah, I’ve had a few stolen and done others disappear into the house somewhere. I do carry cheaper blades for this reason but there are some great low cost/high value options out there. Garberg co es to mind as well as SOG Tellus
Looks really thin too. I don't really get this kind of axe. I think that they are designed for knife people. Hard to split anything without a baton. Thin and an axe with a tang???. Maybe just a bit far away from What I am used to for me.
Great selection of knives there, the knife in the title definitely wouldn't be the one I would choose. The principle looks good (I am not familiar with that one) and Joker knives are awesome. Nice video.
Hey, thank you for watching. The principle is an ok knife if you can get it on sale but there are a number of better options at its Msrp. I did do a review of it a few years ago and still use it. The rubber over molding is coming loose in a spot or two and sharpening it was a bit problematic. I ended up putting a new edge angle on it and it works better and is easier to sharpen now. Pistol draw is from the right. Knife lays flat against the back and even provides a little structure to the kit bag. It is more of an up and out draw. I just like how everything is tucked away and clean.
I did end up returning the saw and replaced it with a cordless Makita. After using the Makita for about 2 years, the kobalt seemed more reliable. The Makita likes to throw its chain a lot.
I was fortunate enough to get my Benchmade 162 back before the price skyrocketed and it is still one of my favorite and most trusted field knives. It isn’t for everyone’s taste, but it does everything I need it to do with no difficulty.
Same here. I picked up an extra one at the REI closeout on the knife. I think I paid like $120. Figure it is a good investment. Cheers and thanks for watching.
Great review/overview. Love comparisons. 👍🏻 My personal opinion (and opinions are like belly buttons - we all have one) is that Gerber lost the plot somewhere along the line, and now basically makes knives for non-knife people. I could see a non-knife person buying that Gerber and sticking it on a backpack and forgetting about it. And maybe that's the best use for it? And that's ok, but I never fell for the strongarm craze, personally. Made in the US is a big seller, tho, for sure. I agree that the Mora (almost any Mora) would be a much better deal. Thanks for the look-see. 👍🏻
I agree with some of that. Most of their energy seems focused on the "Gerber gear" marketing approach where they are selling at Dicks, REI and other big box stores along with sporks and camp dish kits.. They do still have some solid military offerings but almost no tactical at all. Even their hunting offerings seem to be waining. For awhile, they were pretty committed to the bushcraft scene but their offerings were expensive and kind of uninspired.
Thanks for the comment. You had an interesting point about the comparison of the Esee 4 and the lynx. The have very different design and manufacturing philosophies. Where the lyric is essentially hand made, the esee is more of a compilation of parts brought together and assembled. I have an esee 5 and am not as impressed with it as many other out there. The steel has a tendency to rust and needs a coat of oil. This prevent use as a food prep knife. The coating is a thick polymer and will definitely wear in time. I’d definitely go lynx over esee 4.
They have 2 versions of the chest pack. The one I reviewed and another smaller/simpler one I did not look at. If you’re not looking for a CCW, their pouch can be adapted for a small clip on pouch. You need to take a short course in manufacturing economics. A lot of costs you didn’t consider. Made in the USA, worth the extra dollars in my book. Good video. Thanks for sharing.
Yeah, in this case the bench made is (as far as I know) USA made. There is a supply chain in Portland Or. that allows knife companies (Gerber, CRKT, Kershaw, ZT, Leatherman) to completely source within the US. This not only includes materials, but also services such as heat treatment, coating, laser engraving, scales, and 3d milling. In fact, touring the Benchmade factory, you can see most of the process on the factory floor (not sure about heat treatment though). With some USA made knife companies, I'll research and watch factory tour videos and am not sure if the various inputs are all truly "USA made". It would be interesting to really dig into this and try to sus out the different between made and assembled in the USA. I like automobiles where they publish the % of foreign vs. local parts. With all that said, the current bench made is $400+. I just can't justify buying a work knife at that price point when there are so many high quality alternatives out there. I feel like Benchmade is more of a collectors piece now than something your going to work with.
No problem. Ironically, a great deal came up and I bought another one. I returned the first one and thought they deserved another chance. I was really satisfied with round 2: SOG Terminus XR LTE: 4 Month Review HD 1080p ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rcGudNypJfY.html
@@mtnboy123 I hear you, but it's a pricey knife and it should be perfect. The fact they make you pay return shipping isn't right. I'll think about it though lol.
I love my Kobalt 80-volt brushless 18" chainsaw with a 5-ah battery. - - I have (2) Kobalt 80-volt 18" Bar Chainsaws and use (2) 5 AH Batteries. Using it on a Southeast LA farm of 18 acres of tall large pine trees that was devastated by a Hurricane with a tornado. most of 10 acres nearly all down. The chainsaw has. been working great even cutting huge logs and trees up to 20"+ logs and it works like a great. And NO more pulling and pulling to start a gas-powered chainsaw. My first 80-volt 18" Bar Chain saw with a 5-AH Battery and charger was $400 in Jul 2021 and just this year bought the second one.
Great. I ended up replacing it with a Makita which, surprising, is quite finicky compared to the kobalt. I returned it, and Lowe’s was not into it but eventually was convinced. Cheers
Materially and craftsmanship, I agree. Cost benefit is part of the equation. When I made the video you could get a B40 under $100. Now they are like $150! So Lionsteel has come come up in the market and deserves to. Looking at comparable prices today, I think I’d have to shift a little more in ESEE’s direction. Plus, ESEE is starting to make their classic knives in better steels like S 30v. Lionsteel has also offered models in better steel also. The whole question might deserve a second look.
I have a few cheap SOG fixed blades, and theyre tough as hell; way tougher than they have any right to be especially for the prices i paid. I have one that i use solely for batonning through knot filled wood, and its been twisted and bent in every way possible but its still kicking!
Although I have a few collector knives, it is getting much harder to justify them when they just go in a drawer. I guess, that is what has attracted me to SOG since they not only have good designs, but also above average quality and features for their class. Thanks for watching.
Hello, I don't have a Facebook unfortunately but I love Viktos and have all versions of their slings so far. Do you happen to know the 20% off code you talked about? I'd love to pick up this bag
haha, with my wife, we have exactly the same combo, same colors :) Recently I've done Gozo costal trail (Malta) with Scree only and tent in it (just added mesh bag on the front) :)
Very cool! I’ll add that trip to my todo list. I imagine you don’t need much in terms of clothing or a particularly heavy sleeping bag. I’m going to experiment this summer by backpacking with a 50L mountaineering pack instead of a traditional backpacking. Not only lighter, but much more minimalistic. Thanks for watching.
Yes, with the new bushcrafters coming out, I’ve been seeing a lot of clearance. For $170, I’d still pickup especially compared to upper $300’s street price for new ones.
considering packaging, shipment, free leatherpouch, the margin will be even lower. So you really get a good value. Thats what I like about "newcomers". They have to have good products to be convicing. Also they listen to critique. Dont get me wrong, they are not newly founded, but I think the hype for bushcrafting/outdoor brings them attraction from people that never knew this brand existed
