The Art Fair Guy visited the Gerhard Richter "100 Werke für Berlin" Exhibition at the Neue Nationalgalerie Museum in the center of Berlin, Germany.
The exhibition showcases for the first time the long-term loan from the Gerhard Richter Art Foundation to the Neue Nationalgalerie.
The central work of the exhibition is the "Birkenau" cycle (2014), consisting of four large-format abstract paintings. This cycle is the result of Gerhard Richter's long and profound engagement with the Holocaust and its representation. The basis of the works is four photographs from the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, which the artist transferred onto four canvases using charcoal and oil paint, and then gradually painted over in an abstract manner. With each layer of paint, the painted template became less visible until it was no longer discernible. The work also includes a large, four-part mirror placed opposite the four Birkenau paintings, creating an additional level of reflection.
The exhibition is on View till 2026.
