I'm 73 years old, retired nurse with over four decades of experience. My husbabd is 81, retired navy. As the years go by we've lost more of our independence due to health issues. In America, our healthcare falls short of what the elderly need.

I worked in residential care for a long time and it was protocol we called 999 for every little thing despite first aider on every shift and a registered nurse. The ambulance would arrive and take resident to hospital just to be on the safe side. Many residents returned with no injury. You could sense the despondency with the paramedics. We were told most of their calls were to elderly falling. The residents who did remain in hospital came back with less mobility than what they went in with.
