Faun is a German band that was formed in 1998 and plays pagan folk, darkwave, and medieval music. The originality of their music style is that it falls back to "old" instruments, and the singing is always the center of attention. The vocals are performed in a variety of languages, including German, English, Latin, Greek, and Scandinavian languages. Their instruments include Celtic harp, Swedish nyckelharpa, hurdy-gurdy, bagpipes, cittern, flutes, and many others.

There are a lot of medieval Festivals. Hope my Link above does not get deleted. It is a Video from a City and their medieval Weekend every year. I Love the vibe, it's in a Park and you feel like you left the City and time. But right behind the trees is the City 😅

HEILUNG (Epic european & not german Formation) is totally different compared to FAUN, by the Way...FAUN stands for Medieval, HEILUNG for Pre Nordic/Shaman Music.

If you like this medieval style music, then there is good news for you, because there are a lot of german bands that play this style of music, like: Corvus Corax, In Extremo, Subway To Sally, Saltatio Mortis, Feuerschwanz, QNTAL, Tanzwut, Cultus Ferox, Versengold, ... Some of them mix it a bit with metal or electronic music. I would suggest: Saltatio Mortis feat. Faun - Schwarzer Strand

Before Corona i visited 1 to 2 of this "Medival Festivals" in Germany, with my friends. Lot of other bands this kind there and a Market where u can buy jewelry., Leather things. Bought myself a Kilt there.

I recommend that you look for some songs of the band "In Extremo". They are also using medieval instruments and combine that sound with modern rock rhythms. As far as I know, they sing in old swedish - gorgeous sound...

In Extremo sings in multiple languages but mostly German. It's a German medieval band as well.

They had 2 gigs at our venue in Hamburg at the time. It was a pleasure to have them in our club. It was a wonderful experience! I still love "Tinta" to this day.

That Festival, the Castlefest, it's such a cool festival. My Favorite Faun song is Egil Saga. You should check out a band that played there in 2015. That band is called Euzen with the Song Metamorph. I would suggest to hear them first before reacting on Heilung, because it is Marias other Band.

The Tour dates for North America on September/October 2024 are out. If your lucky you can visit a whole concert in Montreal (09 - 29) or Toronto (10 - 01). There are a lot of shows and it´s absolutely worth to see a whole FAUN concert. Nice Reaction and I´m glad you both like it.

A suggestion for a nice festival in Germany to go to would be M'era Luna. It is mostly folk-rock bands like the ones already mentioned playing there. Defenitely somthing you would love to experience.

I have been a big fan of Faun for 15 years. You should try "Federkleid"(Plumage) which is one of their most popular song from this era. They also did a collab with Wardruna to produce "Odin" which I think was in a Viking TV mini-series. For an authentic recreaction of a May 1st Pagan ritual, watch "Walpurgisnaught" The instrument with the crank is the Hurdy Gurdy. Fiona and Katja were the best vocalist duo but their newer lead vocalist is very good as well. Other unique German bands you might find interesting. Ellectric Callboy "We Got the Moves" (EDM& Metal) VanCanto "Speed of Light" (Beat boxing&Metal) Scorpions "Winds of Change" (Classic Rock ballad) Other really interesting bands similar in vibe to Faun are Heilung, Evör, Nini Music, Otyken, and Deloraine. Faun is touring Europe and the USA this year. The appropriate location will only exist in Europe, where they perform in churches and castles.

ahh... this is definitely better than Schlager and Volksmusik. Fun fact: if you like pen & paper and the Middle Ages, you might be interested to know that Germany is a big player in the LARP community. The two largest LARP events in the world are in Germany: ConQuest of Mythodea and Drachenfest. The instrument you thought may be a bagpipe was actually a hurdy-gurdy (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurdy-gurdy) which sounds pretty similar. If you like this kind of music you definitely need to listen to Heilung as well. "Anoana" is one of their newer (and incredibly beautiful) songs.
