I lòve saw backs ,I have five 98/05 s, at this time ,what I looking for is a 98/02 ,now .Also I have six other sawbacks, Swiss, firemans, etc. LOVE SAWBACKS....
I have an oddball one in my collection. My bayonet is a #sawback version of the 84/98 pattern manufactured at Deutsche maschinenfabrik A-G. The spine is marked with a D and a crown above it. Through what I have learned it seems to be a Bavarian manufactured bayonet, though I can't say that with 100% confidence. Glad to see I'm not the only one interested in the different variants of imperial German bayonets, thanks for more information, looking forward to seeing more from you. Cheers.
Imperial German Bayonets No date to be found. All I see is a letter "D" on the spine. Might have been worn with heavy use or just age, my example has definatly seen better days.
I have one, the maker stamp is Koppel? No saw teeth, leather and steel sheath.. I love it. Just like to one on top of screen at end of video. I might modify it.
I have a 84/98 and its a bit intresting, its made in 1889 and it has TWO manufacturing names On the left its weyersberg, and on the right its ERFURT. And another strange thing obout it is that its been shortened? But it was suposedly done by the germans. Ive posted some photos in a facebook group and there are ones with long and short fullers. Have you ever heard of it? The spike is genuine because its covered in the same metal finish as the rest of the blade so its not something done at home by someone
Yes, there were supposingly longer and short ones. The rumor has it that the S84/98 old pattern with the long fullers were shortened sometime to make them match the length of the "short fullered" bayonets. I have never seen any official document or anything like this to proove it though. But with these diffrent fullar lengths it seems quite likely. The two diffrent manufacturers is also original. Usually this means that one manufacturer produced the blade and then the state arsenal, im guessing its erfurt with your bayonet, assambled the bayonet. Cheers, Vincent
Thanks for reply. Id also like to ask why did they put the two groves on the back of the grip? And is the finished blade a common feature? It has a dark blue, almost black finish, its alot darker than the weimar finish, so im intrested if its original imperial finish? Thanks
W 1918 unit is 60-20 The blade is manufactured by waffenfabrik mauser & its got field repair. The tip was broken and welded before it was taken out of service. Still has cosmoline in it.
Hello. Thank you for the request. The next time i buy a item that needs cleaning/restoring i will make a video. I don't know when this will happen but i'll try my best. With kind regards, Vincent.
My understanding is that the saw backs, or S84/98S N/A were used by NCO's. They are to short & light to use as a tool. Some had their blades removed due to Imperial Decree of Dec 1917 because of British Propaganda. The easily forgot they used saw back bayonets in the late 1870's!! I have a few examples of S84-98S N/A Abg. The earlier S84/98 N/A as explained, is interesting variation. The original S71/84's made into the earliest S84/98 A/A went on Gew88 rifles. Imperial German Bayonets knows his stuff!! Very accurate presentations!!
Thank you very much, i have a great shiny butcher, the spine marks on it are Crown What looks like a backward fancy 7?? 17 Crown What looks like a 6?? On the bottom of the handle Is a Crown on top of a fancy H I wish i could send you a picture Thanks for anything you can do with it on information Todd Sims
The 1920 is the official property stamp of the weimar era Reichswehr. The Reichswehr also used a slightly diffrent unit marking system. "3/R.R. 18.101" stands for the 3rd squadron of the 18th mounted regiment, bayonet no. 101. in 1921 there were 18 mounted regiments, 5 squadron each. There were 172 bayonets 84/98 n.A. per squadron. Cheers, Vincent
Hello. There are some S84/98nP and S98/05nP without property stamps. All of the "Ersatz-bayonet" were not propert stamped either. I dont really know why these bayonets dont feature a property stamp but during the chaos of the war, everything was possible. There was also such a big need when it comes to these "modern" bayonets that i belive that those unmarked bayonets were also issued. Cheers, Vincent.
