IIRC, when the West German government went to Tanzania to pay the Askari their government pension in the 1970's, none of the 85-90 men who showed up could prove they'd been part of the colonial forces. one of the Germans had the idea of using a broom to have the men perform their rifle drill. Every Askari that had come performed it flawlessly, and they all received their pensions.

Don't tell me that the casualty figures aren't that impressive for the Germans. They were outnumbered 8-1, instead of losing 15% of their number for 12% of the enemy number killed, by all rights they should have been overrun. Holding your ground when attacked by an enemy who outnumbers you 4-1 or 3-1 is impressive, but 8-1 is outstanding.

Perhaps he was a racist but it should be noted that this was the norm for his era and he was at least ahead of his time inasmuch as he made officers of his African troops when it was warranted, spoke fluent Swahili and said "We are all Africans here". I mean, Abraham Lincoln was a racist in that he did NOT believe the Black man the equal of the White, he just believed that they should be governed by the same set of laws. So these men exist in the same space, of being racist by today's standards but being far ahead of their own times in terms of their own standards versus the standards of the time.
@inurmomsbedroom123
@inurmomsbedroom123 5 лет назад
The problem with these 'standards' is that they are subjective. I could say today that the standard is to be racist and there might very well be a lot of racists. But does that make it the standard? No. A lot of people would disagree with that statement. Conclusion: there is no standard for world views. There can be majority and minority, but no standard. On the side: racist and anti-semite are dogwhistles for "political opponent I disagree with that I wish to slander". If this guy was so bad, he wouldn't have gotten Africans to fight for him for 4 years. Or maybe he was right and Africans are inherently less intelligent... either way, you can't really attack him. He's either right or you were wrong about him.
@Lazarus7000
@Lazarus7000 5 лет назад
Perhaps "Standard" was the wrong choice of words, but I agree with your points. Especially regarding people flinging around "racist", it is at least as often as not used as a bludgeon to silence someone whom you cannot debate with rational means. Vorbek was ahead of his cohort of "highly placed old European dudes" in terms of race relations.
@jam8539

@@inurmomsbedroom123 racism can take different forms and is on a scale, it doesnt have to be that he thought them inferior just less than. most likely he would rather have 1000 germans than 1000 africans, but he still accepted them as a fighting force, and even 60 years later those same men were proud to have fought under him
@inurmomsbedroom123
@inurmomsbedroom123 5 лет назад
@@jam8539 That's not racism, that's nationalism. You can try to debate that but they are two different words with different meanings. It is natural for people to want to live with their own, fight beside their own, and be lead by their own. "Racism" is a label multiculturalists give people to shut them down. They've worked for years to condition people to freeze when they hear that word. In the end, people need to break the mold and ask themselves what they think is true. Stop forcing people to live with people who are different. If melting pot societies could work, that is surely not the way.
@Lazarus7000
@Lazarus7000 5 лет назад
@@inurmomsbedroom123 Quite true. People naturally form groups, classes, cohorts, tribes, nations. It is an organic process that is observed everywhere and involving differences both manufactured and organic. Using the bayonets or force of propaganda to attempt to undermine these structures in no way causes people to see that they are alike, rather it causes them to gird themselves for battle, and resist. Cultural interchange is also an organic process, and groups will generally have dealings with one-another and learn from one-another. Two things principally separate man from beast: mastery of fire, and communication of complex concepts. Both have enabled us to advance beyond forming simple tools of wood and rock as other intelligent beasts have been known to, to our current station. So this communication, this exchange of concepts, is one of the most fundamental aspects of humanity. it WILL take place, and it is fundamentally good. But much like sex, when it happens organically it is lovely, beautiful, magical, even; but when it is forced, coerced, blackmailed, the results are at best degenerate and at worst horrific. Any authority that fancies itself moral will attempt only to enforce general peace and order on the interactions of these groups, and not to force anyone to think or act a certain way. Anyone who had done any kind of mechanical work, carpentry, forestry, electronics, welding, smithing, anything like this, will know that there are certain operations that can be improved by adding force, heat, current, etc., and others where just opening the taps results in spoiling the workpiece, whatever it may be. Sadly the results are tragedy when the workpiece is entire societies.

An interesting fact about the native troops. In the 60s West Germany voted to restore their pension payments after... well you know. About 300 showed up to the German Embassy in Tanzania, however many had a hard time proving that they had actually served. The german east african native soldiers (askari) were the best treated not white soldiers in all of the armies of europe, they were very successfull, partly because Lettow-Vorbeck listened to them and they taught him surprise attack tactics and others and he taught them european drill. And they were very thankfull for treating them the same as white soldiers. Lettow Vorbeck was a true leader. Very few other commanders in history endured what he did alongside his men out in the African wilderness. His soldiers were extremely loyal to him, because he marched alongside them and guarded their lives carefully. Contrary to what many people seem to assume about him he was not a racist, if you look at how he treated Africans and what he thought about them, their lives and existences were just as valid to him as any German. He held off forces many times the size of his own for 4 years and never suffered a single defeat on the battlefield. Yes he lost control of German East Africa, but that's because he knew he could never hold it against the British and their allies if he fought them for every inch of ground, so he concentrated his effort on slowing them down and making the campaign as costly as possible for the Allies. The Armistice in 1918 even included a special clause for Von Lettow. Nobody knew exactly where exactly he was in November 1918, so the British gave a 1 month grace period to him and the Schutztruppe so that they could track him down and tell him the war was over. He is a fascinating character and should rightly be considered one of the most skilled military leaders of modern history.

If Vorbeck's actions held off 300,000 men with a force of around 15,000, then yes, that's a significant victory. If the Entente had been able to bring 200,000 extra men into Western Europe and throw them into any one portion of the line, they have a significant advantage. The Askari’s were absolute badasses, ferocious and disciplined, and Vorbeck actually really respected them, allowing them to become officers (which was not exactly common let’s just say), listening to their feedback and suggested tactics and have their wives follow them around. The Askaris repaid this with dutiful service and were proud to fit under him and for Germany. This could not be said the Arab troops he had, one time they literally in an attempted surprise attack, intentionally alerted the British to their presence before scattering, let’s just say the Askari behind them repaid them for this action.

the text at 1:01 says, "To ensure native labor for these estates the natives were subjected to a poll tax of 6s. per head annually. In order to pay it, and with rare exceptions they had no other means, they were obliged to sell themselves for a part of the year. This made the cultivation of their own farms difficult. To add to the difficulty they were subjected to annual corvees. In large gangs they were transported from one part of the country to another, and, under conditions which caused a high rate of mortality, forced to labor on the making of roads and other works. Almost always these demands coincided with their own seed-time."

Man, what you did is merely a wikipedia footnote rather than a proper video, I'm very dissapointed. You even left out something as cool as L59's flight to ressuply Vorbeck and his troops, which to this day is the longest combat flight on record.
