How many vowel sounds does German have? You would be surprised to hear the answer - or at least almost nobody knew what it was when I recently made a poll about it. Turns out there are 20 vowel sounds in total - and here is a list of all of them.

What you need to do to be my intro:
Record yourself saying the following things:
"Hallo Leute! Ich bin ___ (You can say whatever you want here - name, (youtube) nickname, where you live, where you're from, why you're learning German, or anything else you'd like, one or more things. It's best if you do this part in German, too, but if you're too shy, English is fine as well - just try to keep the video to roughly 10 seconds or shorter) und ihr seht Deutsch Für Euch!"
Please don't edit your videos; if you'd like something changed (e.g. color correction), let me know in your email. I'll make sure to make you look as good as possible anyway, though ;)
I can use a lot of video formats, but your safest bets are the usual candidates: .avi, .mov, .mp4 - DON'T use .dv, please. Once you're happy with your video, send it to me via ONE of these channels:
attach the video to an email to dfekontakt@gmail.com
send me a DropBox link/invite me to a folder (also dfekontakt@gmail.com)
send me a link to a the video on RU-vid, also via mail
please title your message "DFE Intro"
There's NO time limit for this, this will be an on-going thing as long as you send me videos. I'm looking forward to your submissions - feel free to get creative with it! :)

I needed this WHOLE video. I heard a subtle difference between the oe short and long but I thought I was just making it up. I now hear the a and the a: when I didn't understand it before. Thank you. Merry Christmas!

I speak with an English accent somewhat close to RP (think stereotypical English accent), and when there is an "er" at the end of a word, we use a schwa, which means I find it really difficult to pronounce the differences between "eine" and "einer", "Lehre" and "Lehrer", or "spreche" and "Sprecher" when speaking German, even though I know the differences and spelling. Es geht mir total auf die Nerven!

I just came across this and thought it was an interesting topic. And my mind is blown a bit. I grew up outside of Bingen Am Rhein, and I didn't realise I spoke a dialect until I was 18 and have been living in the USA with my parents since I was 12. Last year staying in Frankfurt with my cousin, his girlfriend made a comment to me saying, "you have a very strong German accent in your German." I laugh and all because I know I speak in a dialect but when compared to my uncles I thought okay it's not that aggressive. But I've always thought My mom and I had a pretty standard way of pronouncing my words, with just a few regional flair words thrown in... Now having watched a couple of your videos and have noticed how I would speak vs standard, but I'm a little shook because I didn't realise how many vowels I don't make a strong distinction in. So that's a fun.

At the other extreme you had Ubyk, a now-extinct language with 80 consonants and only two vowels.

Oh yeah :) Critical Role was what finally got me to try it, too. Check out episode 102, I did some D&D vocab in that one .) Been thinking for a while how to make more videos on the topic that still fit the channel, but so far I haven't been able to come up with anything good.

Wow! I don't know how I missed episode 102. I just watched it and LOVED it! Thanks for making that video. I've only started learning German this year and started playing DnD last year. I'm having SOOO much fun with both. I would loved to watch a recorded session of you role playing your character (which I'm guessing is probably a...Ranger =)

"hat" ist ein Beispiel für ein kurzes a ohne Doppelkonsonant. Das o hat 3 Klänge: Einen kurzen ("Sonne"), aber zwei klar unterscheidbare lange ("wo" vs. "Norbert").
@DeutschFuerEuch
@DeutschFuerEuch 5 лет назад
Drei o sind mir noch nie untergekommen; m.E. liegt der Lautunterschied hier nicht am o, sondern am a-Schwa, das durch das "r" entsteht.
@tomhase7007
@tomhase7007 5 лет назад

_das_ or _um_ have a short vowel followed by only one consonant
@DeutschFuerEuch
@DeutschFuerEuch 6 лет назад
True! For a moment I suspected that was connected to one syllable + Auslautverhärtung, but it's not true for "das Gras" or "der Weg" (but it IS for "weg"). So there are exceptions to that tendency - good thing I didn't declare it an actual rule. I was starting to uestion that decision.

@cl0udbear 6 лет назад
I don't think this is right. There are 17. au, ei, and eu aren't vowel sounds, they're multiple vowel sounds that you've already counted, said in sequence. au is /a/ followed by /u/ ei is /a/ followed by /i/ eu is /ə/ followed by /i/
@DeutschFuerEuch
@DeutschFuerEuch 6 лет назад
Depends on how you define vowel sounds. Diphthongs ARE vowel sounds, they're just "double sounds", hence the "di". The rest are called "monophthongs". Your list is not completely off, but doesn't really hit the nail on the head; the sounds are kinda close to a pure combination of two monophthongs, but they are different enough to be considered distinct sound units.
@cl0udbear
@cl0udbear 6 лет назад
Mhmm, I know what diphthongs and monophthongs are. "they're just "double sounds"" is an almost exact restatement of my point. They're composed of two pure vowel sounds. This is why they're also known as 'gliding vowels', because they start with one vowel sound and end with another, without ending the syllable. The IPA notation for diphthongs is their two constituent vowel sounds, because they are not distinct. We can also ask the question "what's a diphthong?" If we include phonemic diphthongs then we've got like 30+.

To extend the birds analogy: Say there is a room with ten people in it: Anne Catrin Daniel Emma Franziska Gerhard Heinrich Isabel Johanna Kari Anne and Emma are conjoined twins. How many people are there in the room? a) 10, because there are 10 people; b) 11, because Anne and Emma, despite being counted already, must be counted again as conjoined twin; c) 9, because Anne and Emma are a conjoined twin and not individual people.

What about the “y” (in Hybrid, for example)? Y is not a vowel but it sounds like one... (I guess...) Thank you 🙂
@DeutschFuerEuch
@DeutschFuerEuch 6 лет назад
When sounding like a vowel in German, y is realized either as an i or an ü - so while it is another letter that produces vowel sounds, those vowel sounds are not unique. Meaning "y" doesn't grow this list, but it does go on the list of how these sounds can appear in spelling :)

i think your are trying to make german seem more difficult than it is. "Standard High German, or Hochdeutsch, is HIGHLY PHONETIC. Especially when compared to the seeming lack of it in English."quora.... so we read the way it is written "kind of a" unique sound per symbol , this is what matters to german learners and makes german easy to learn, so it is a peace of cake compared to learning english (absolut non phonetic crazy language) properly
