Mike bicyclemike If your handle doesn't hold in a standing position, its connection points lack force directed to inside. To make it, we need to widen the upper half of the handle a bit. Then the connection point on the lower tip of the handle takes the reverse directed force to lock itself up. Thanks.
I greatly appreciate the review and other tidbits of info that you have provided in this video! I wish my Japanese vocabulary was as good as your English!!
Hi, Wako. Very interesting points about aluminum. I read that recent studies have concluded that aluminum causes none of the ill effects previously thought. But because I'm getting older and lazier, I'm switching to titanium because of its weight. I believe my firebox is only four or five ounces. I'll be using it, my Silky saw, and knife tomorrow. The weather is beautiful right now in the forests of Southern California. Cheers! --Scott
Very good bush kit. I carry this German mess kit and a firebox as well. My hurricane/emergency preparedness kit is always ready to go during storm season.
I do like your videos. Always straight to the point. Thanks from Germany old ally ;-). Is'nt if funny. It has been over 70 years know and now we play with American knifes and staff :-)
I am not a doctor, so i can not say if aluminum is armful or not but... I need to tell everyone this: At my place the tube water need to be boiled to be drinkable, so i do it every day. At one point i started to use a big pot made of aluminum to boil the water, and after that i store the water in some containers. After a while i noted on the surface of the water stored in a stainless steel pot (made by ZEBRA) something that look like "gasoline on water" (you know... That strange "shiny rainbow colors"); i putted my finger in it slowly and "something" builded up around my index... Like a "cotton candy crystals"... I figured out it was ALUMINUM OXIDE... That stuff was covering all the water surface (not just "a spot"); thinking that i was drinking that shit every day, STOPPED ME INSTANTLY TO USE ALUMINUM AGAIN (at last to boil water). It is an experiment that everyone can make with no effort: 1 boil water with an aluminum container 2 put it in a stainless steel container (when smoking hot), put a lid on it 3 let it rest for at last 12 hours - MAKE SURE THE POT WILL BE 100% STATIC, DO NOT MOVE IT - or the oxide layer will disappear. 4 put a toothpick in it slowly to see the crystals build up... P.S. i have the same mess kit in aluminum but i also bought the stainless steel version (very hard to find right now) that i like better
That's a great kit. I've been thinking about getting a German or Swedish mess kit. I love that little saw. I just got my first Silky and what a difference!
I think you meant Ceramic with the porcelain in the pan. It's a very nice kit. I used to use a regular mess kit but one time the mess kit melted down in the open fire and my food was wasted because of the molten aluminium parts in it. Your firebox won't be a problem because it's a small fire.
I dont mean to be off topic but does someone know a trick to log back into an instagram account..? I was dumb forgot the login password. I would love any assistance you can give me.
@Karsyn Anders I really appreciate your reply. I found the site through google and im in the hacking process atm. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
I agree with your thoughts on cooking in aluminum. And to be fair, regardless of what a person cooks in, minute trace amounts of the metal will end up in the food.
This mess tin pot is SOooo versatile ... You can cook , boil , steam AND BAKE. In genious item and it looks odd but if you start using its all makes sense why its got that shape.
I have both the aluminium and stainless steel Swedish mess kit which includes the alcohol stove and you can use the stove to burn wood as an option. Just another option Thanks
Thank you for the info on the mess kit. I am skeptical of using the aluminum systems myself. I try to use stainless steel as much as possible. I would like to see any videos you have of the actual kit in use. Thanks.
Aluminum is only harmful if it gets in your bloodstream in extremely small particles. Ingesting aluminum is not harmful. Inhaling tiny particles of aluminum can be fatal. Great care should be taken when dealing with aluminum dust or powdered aluminum that gets in the air, but I've seen no evidence that eating from aluminum cookware is at all harmful. I personally prefer steel with a copper coating on the bottom to distribute heat evenly, or titanium, to aluminum, but it's personal choice based on durability and/or weight, and not because I think aluminum cookware is harmful.
Wako, I think you were talking about enamel coated metal pots at 7:11, just for your future reference. Lots of cookware over here uses a similar construction method. Kanpai!
Aluminium is not as bad for people as it is for the environment. It harms plants and soil. That is mainly when in a form like dust or microscopic particles in pollution. They actually say that cooking with older nonstick coated pans are more harmful as the coatings are chemically treated and wear off into food. Also, Perhaps you meant Ceramic or Stoneware.
Poe Bear: 2 cups of boiling water then add 1 cup of rice. Boil until the water is almost gone, then remove from fire and serve your rice with other meat and veggies.
Of course, any product can go wrong regardless of country of origin. But generally speaking, when it comes to industrial/high tech/military products, US products are second to none.
Doc, like you I like the aluminum kit for outdoor cooking but I do not like it for home cooking because some sauces stick like cement. These sauces are a bit fancy for a camp setting so there is no problem if you don't use them but if you scramble eggs or make sauces with sugar and over cook them even a little the food left in the pan will be hard to clean. That isn't good in the field in my opinion. Polished steel is not as porous and I think it performs better over a gas or electric stove. What do you think? The only metals which I avoid ingesting in very small amounts are the heavy metals like lead-zinc type. They can affect the brain over time. That was a great explanation about the anti acid. I need to go make some ramen. I am hungry now. I can smell the wood smoke.
James Jacocks: for stuck on food, after eating your meal, refill the pot with water and place over the fire. Boiling water will loosen the stuck on food and boil it to the surface. Remove from the fire, dump the watered garbage and wash normally.
+flashdamingo The Swedish one is stainless steel and way too heavy to hike in your ruck but is great if you don't have to carry the darn thing. They are also very expensive compared to the German mess kit.
The folding saw on the table is Silky Pocketboy 130 medium teeth. I think Pocketboy 170 medium teeth is the right size folding saw for light bushcraft like Firebox cooking. Pocketboy 130 is just compact and satisfies minimum necessity. Thanks.
