One of the first words a foreign mother of small children learns in Germany: "Matschhose".

Typical German comment for the American Mom would be: Don't you have a washing machine? 😉

In my childhood I had to put on old clothes after school and then my mother gently but persistently pushed me out the front door! No matter if something rained or snowed. Since the other parents also did this with their children, you met of course on the playgrounds or football fields all the other sympathizers. And when the hunger got bigger in the late afternoon you just went home.Also reasonable from my mother's point of view, so she also had her well deserved rest without her bored children around her .And after all the playing, dinner always tasted good 😊

Yes, that's how my childhood was. In summer we put up a tent in the garden, the challenge was to not put a foot inside the house for days, which meant showering under the garden hose or running around in the warm summer rain. It's Was so fun! Best time of my life

In Austria (at least where I am from) we call those clothes "Rumteufelgewand" - the "romp-around-clothes". Literally the "devil-around-clothes".

When my son came home from Planung outside, I wash him to see, if it's really him and not the neighbour boy😂. He was so dirty. After the bath we had a happy boy sitting on the table to eat his dinner with a healthy face color 😂

Having seen your videos with your kids, my impression is that these kids would have done exactly the same thing in the USA as in Germany. The difference being that their mother now has been culturally educated. In my youth, my mother made me wear short trousers from around March 1st - falling a hole in trousers was a bigger problem in her thinking than flesh wounds

That's how my childhood was. Anorak, Cordhose and Gummistiefel. After we came home we were dirty like pigs 🙄 But we had a lot of fun and my parents had a lot of time for themselves.

And all of us boys had a normal pocket knife (given as a gift from our fathers). Yes of course we cut ourselves sometimes, but only us and never anyone else.

We played a lot outside in the 80s, when my parents bought their house in Hildesheim. The forest was only 500 metres away (in this time kids still could play in the forest, it was safe and no problem. In 2023, as a parent, I would no longer allow that!), still there were many vacant lots where we could dig, build us huts or race with our BMX bikes. So long ago, a beautiful time.
@Baccatube79

I would still allow my kids to play in the forest. The rule is: stay together in a group.

I don‘t see any reason why the forest should have gotten more dangerous now. My children played outside all the time in the nineties, also in the nearby forest. If I had kids now, I would encourage them them to play outside, too. I fear, though, that most children are too occupied with social media and TV to even develop a longing for playing outside with others.

Before you use ADW too often you should know that there's another meaning. Arsch Der Welt ("Wo liegt denn dieses Dorf?" "ADW".) 😅 Meaning it's really far away.. And since you live in cologne you also can say JWD (Janz Weit Draußen), it's kölsch.
