As an American of German descent, this video gets me emotional. Schroeder embodies the German experience of the 20th century. A father and mother who grew up in the shadow of the first world war. His father was killed in the second war, his mother left destitute to raise a family because of it. And then to grow up in the shadow of the Soviet Union only to witness and then preside over a unified Germany- it's no wonder he gets emotional hearing the anthem at the end of his Chancellorship.
Thats what i like on germany. They are not nazis just because they are playing their Anthem with military assistance. They can not help it that their ancestors have been overwhelmed by the nazis. You should give them a second chance!
We got a second chance more than 50 years ago....and look at us now. One of the most democratic, safe and wealthy countries in the world. It was a lot of work but we made it
Just a clarification, the helmets and the uniforms are all modern. Nothing Nazi about them. The helmets are modern Kevlar helmets that are polished (these are the same helmets that you'll seeing American police and Marines using, minus the matte finish. The rest of the uniform was designed after unification (I own a coat myself, very comfy). They're grey, but they're not nazi uniforms. The Kar 98s were used by Isreal after the war, and shipped back after unification (they are used only for drill service).
Could I perchance ask then what the torches are for? I'm from Canada, and in Commonwealth of Nations, torches are almost never used, reserved only for the most formal of remembrance day ceremonies, and even then, rarely, and a single one. Is there a meaning behind them; I am quite curious?
This is not to be old. That was only a few years ago. As Chancellor Schröder is in video, the predecessor of Chancellor Merkel. So these are neither Nazis nor is it fake:)
Rory Shade Yes. Torches are traditionally used during ceremonies called Großer Zapfenstreich. Its a type of Military Tattoo that is used in Germany and Austria. This ceremony is appropriate for the use of torches.
That was impressive and nothing wrong with national pride at all. Schroeder was a great leader and sad to see tears at his farewell time. Pride was evident
I can't understand all these Nazi comments whenever a German army video is posted on RU-vid. Today's Germany and its Germanic neighbour Austria are examples any country should follow. I am from Malta and as some of you would know my country was one of the most bombed countries during the second world war. However the Maltese people have a deep admiration for Germany and its civilised and respectful people. German people are rightly proud of their traditions, and I dare say should not be ashamed of their Prussian traditions. If you know any European history you would know that the Prussian rulers, especially Frederick the Great, were some of the most enlightened rulers in an age of despotism.
+Anton Zammit Thank you very much! I appreciate anything you said. You need to understand that it is still very difficult to be a patriot in germany. I love my country, and I am proud of it. Like you should be proud of Malta.
Anton Zammit why the fuck are you talking about Prussia, that part of Germany is long gone. Most Germans have nothing to do with Prussia, Germany is a unity of German states Prussia is only one of them. When you say Germans should be proud of Prussia then you are spitting on the idea of Germany itself.
I agree, but not on Austria, they present themselvs as victims of Nazi Germany, which was not the case, bigger percentage of Austrian population was pro nazi than they were in Germany.
It's such an honor as a Korean to see the former chancellor of Germany come to see the victims of the Japanese cruelties and to console them. Showing such sympathies in the brotherhood of mankind and further urging unrepentant Japanese to repent and come to reparations of the atrocities committed touches my heart making me think that the Germany has been truly blessed with having such a great human being as a chancellor. Japanese impertinence is beyond any measure with making fabrications, minimizing, and denying such horrendous crimes against humanity. I am glad that the chancellor share the sentiments with Korean and rolls up his sleeves to fight for justice to prevail. God bless the chancellor! We feel greatful for your kindness.
No. Since the Cold War they've been downgrading. Through out the Cold War they had ~500,000 men. After unification the Bundeswehr has compromised of 180,000 personnel. That's a significant decrease. There are no future plans of raising that amount.
How quick did they build once Hitler took over, the German army had limits placed on them after world war one and grew to power again. They controlled major provinces in Afghanistan but of course Americans turn a blind eye to the fact that all of NATO played a key part in that war.
This scene captures the spirit of Germany. It would be awesome for Germany to reintroduce these types of uniforms along with Pickelhaubes, and become more patriotic again.
@Michael P. I known the leather combat version of the Pickelhaube was replaced by the Stahlhelm in 1916. When I say bring back the Pickelhaube, I mean bring back regular ceremonial Pickelhaubes for ceremonial purposes and dress uniform, not for combat.
I disagree with your opinion...the first two verses are not sung anymore. They contained "Deutschland über alles", "Germany first" so to say. These two verses really dont fit anymore...I totally agree with that. But as a german myself I can identify with the third verse quite well that is only sung nowadays. It starts with "Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit", means "Unity and Rule of Law and Freedom". Nothing bad about it imo.
For those ones how want an english translation: Google Translator Sorry for my bad english.
Everytime a chancellor, president, defense minister or high ranking general leaves. It can also be displayed for major events like birthday of the army or the state.
the wars with the Romans, the 1st World War and the 2nd World War did not extinguish the bellicose nature of the Germans. She's still there, she just needs a reason.
Hey, you have "Contact Lock" on so couldn't reply to your PM. You advised: "All historical european countries have their amazing dress. Just like the brits with our bearskin hats and red uniform" My reply: Think you meant to say, "just like the Brits with our kilts & glengarries"! (scoots away quickly, whistling "Hielan Laddie") Regards, GM ;)
Warum?
however: hitler was as much a socialist as schröder is one. the socialism/kommunism is the antonym to the ideology hitler proclemed. he was a national- socialist; but the national part, not the socialistic was important for him.
I love this tune! It was adopted as a hymn "glorious things of thee are spoken" and was originally a gift from Hayden to Emporer Francis's for a celebration. It sounds best on a big dirty old church organ!!!!!
You're right, but there will always bei people who don't know shit and write stupid Nazi comments. Especially in the Internet there are alot of stupid people
This ceremony was for Gerhard Schröder when he was not re-elected as Chancellor of Germany (= head of government over here) in 2005 and Merkel came to power. Its called "Grosser Zapfenstreich" and military saying "Goodbye and farewell" so to say. The english word should be "Great Tattoo". Not sure if "last post" or "taps" is used over there too.
*_PROBABLY_*_ and technicallly only the first time that the bundeswehr or the guards wore almost similar wermacht uniforms.. And this what i love about that year's parade.. And good thing in special occassions it isn't somewhat those american funded or cheapskate bundeswehrs.. that's WHAT i technically love about this country.. i technically swear to god.. Let germany does her traditions..Nazis are dead obliterated.. It's not a reference it's their history_
+Inspector Javert The video is from 2005 and features a fare-well ceremony to outgoing chancellor Gerhard Schröder (Angela Merkel's predecessor). The ceremony itself is a "Großer Zapfenstreich" and dates to the first half of the 19th century. The term Zapfenstreich means "striking the tap" and comes from an older military custom where an officer, accompanied by a drummer or piper, would enter the pub and strike the tap of the barrel with a stick. That meant 'no more alcohol, off to bed'.
The thing is most people understand that line wrong Deutschland deutschland über alles means "germany germany above everything" But that dosnt mean we germans think we are the greatest nation ,this song shold symbolize that the UNITED german is ABOVE the splitted germany. And germans was splittet very long after the holy roman empire , it hat different states like prussia ,bavaria ,hessen and so on. I hope you guys understand me :P
I am right-wing but Schroeder was a courageous leader who grew some balls and made the painful reforms that were needed to stop this great German nation going down the toilet. Today France and Britain are a joke, Germany is growing strong. Political cojones pay off but you won't be reelected.
I know she's Dutch. But you see in holland the have a lot of campers and people who live in trailer parks and I'm sure jenny is one of them at least I know her mum is
Herr Bundeskanzler, Ich melde den Großen Zapfenstreich ab. Mr. chancellor, I am deregistering the Big Zapfenstreich (like the last post/ taps/ great tattoo).
@Packerd01 you are mixing different things up: socialism is the policy, which was practised in the udssr, the ddr usw. social- democratism is NOT socialism. eachone can say what he thinks. as i said before: inform yourself better! there is a big distance between the things you are putting togehter.
This comment was again a brilliant performance PhilsDancingChannel1! Some people still do not understand this history, this video has nothing to do with nazis, it is the adoption of the german Bundeskanzler! But some people are too stupid and childish to understand that!
@NordenHonor As the Deutschlandlied was writen Germany was broken into sever individual states like Saxony, Prussia, Bavaria and so on. So the "Deutschland, Deutschland über alles, über alles in der Welt" want to say, that a united Germany is much more important as the interest of this individual states. So now tell me, what this shall have to do with the WW2???
You may say that Germany was guilty that the war broke out, because it encouraged Austria-Hungary to declare war to Serbia, but you may also say that Germany was not guilty at all, as it just followed its duty as an alliance partner. The question if Germany is guilty or not is not clear until today. Look up the Fischer Controversy. It is all depending on your point of view, but saying that Germany started the war is completely wrong.
All citizens have a reason to be proud of their country. Germany has great musicians, philosophers, scientists, artists, also Germans made huge achievements in technology etc etc. but they should feel bad and a bit of shame for their actions during WW1 and WW2 and the economic war they are doing at the moment against other European countries.
I've heard many historians say all countries in Europe were equally guilty concerning WW1, but Germany got blamed because it was the lower. Of course we all know who unequivocally started the Second War.
Does not make sense anymore. If you start with that, you sing the first stanza, which also contains things like "Von der Maas bis an die Memel, Von der Etsch bis an den Belt". Those rivers marked the German territory back in the time when the national anthem was composed, but today it is much different. Therefore, it does not make any sense to sing the first stanza as well. Of course the main reason not to sing it anymore is that it is "too nationalistic", but the territory is another reason.
