Though I am not completely fluent in German I got most of the questions right because from 1977 when I was in Germany in the US Army I bought and read many German newspapers and magazines mainly to feed my interest in German politics. If you read newspapers such as Die Zeit or Das Frankfurter Allgemeine or a magazine such as Der Spiegel or Focus you would have had the information to answer more of these questions correctly. Viewing TV news such as Das Tagesschau might also have helped you achieve a better result. Best of luck if you decide to take this test for real in the future.

I live in Villingen-Schwenningen on the edge of the Black forest, just like you. I also lived and worked in Dallas, USA for a short time. I have a German wife that I met here when I first came here on Holiday. I have Dual Nationality and two Passports, I got my Germann Nationality when the UK decided to leave the EU.I did not have to take any tests at all because I had been living here so long and it took only about a couple of months. Before I applied I did all the probable questions online with my wife,( About 300) and I scored better than she did, and she is born and bred German, Then I did not need to take the test, "what a Bummer" Oh and one big difference here to the US is the size of the parking bays in the US to Germany. Keep up the great videos.

That’s the closest thing to an “Ehestreit” that I’ve seen between you two in a video. High drama! I don’t want to blow my own horn, but I got 100% on my Einbürgerungstest. Seeing how much you had to struggle with the language gave me a new appreciation about how challenging this test can be if you don’t have the linguistic background. It was basically rote learning. I went through the whole catalog of questions until I basically memorized all the answers to the questions that I didn’t already know. The Einbürgerungstest had just recently been implemented by the time I applied for citizenship. There’s also a cute story about how I was able to document my level of German proficiency.

I think both your German is better than you think, but if I can give you some advice from personal experience, I think you would both benefit from studying German phonetics and its rules in a bit more detail. I had phonetics as a course in my short stint at a language studies/interpreters school, and it's crazy what difference correct pronunciation makes in being more confident in speaking a language and seeming more fluent to native speakers. And luckily the rules for German pronunciation are very consistent with rare exceptions, unlike English where it's the other way around 😂 edit: Ok I should have waited for the German classes at the end, nevermind 😁

When I did this test a few years ago, I found the most important thing was to make sure I read each question through properly. There seem to be quite a lot in the catalogue that just deal with the same subject, but the question is framed with a 'not' or 'forbidden' instead of asking you for what 'is' the case or 'is allowed'.

I have taken both the test questions of the US citizenship test and the German Einbürgerungstest. What I found interesting is how many of the questions were literally the same. Makes sense though, because while the political systems are quite different in detail, they are also very similar when it comes to the basics. Things like separation of powers are a thing in both countries, even if it is interpreted slightly differnt. Freedom of expression is a thing both in the US and Germany but doesn't mean exactly the same. There are differences between the 1. amendment and Art. 5 of the Grundgesetz.
@harryhirsch3637
@harryhirsch3637 2 года назад
When the Grundgesetz (german constitution) was created in 1948/49 the western allies of WWII had a lot of influence because they wanted to make sure something like a nazi-state would never exist again. That's why there are so many similarities between the german and the american constitution but of course there are also differences.
@LtdNulty
@LtdNulty 2 года назад
Also i think, when they designed the german Einbürgerungstest, they might have taken the american one (and probably those of other countries) as a model. If i remember correctly, it has been implemented not more than 20 years ago when other countries, like the us or canada already had similar methods to naturalize immigrants.

When doing the test on line regarding freedom of expression even though I did not understand every word but got the gist of them I was thinking the questions are harking back to the 1930's & dictatorship. So whenever I saw a freedom question freedom was the word I went for.

@@maudeboggins9834 the german constitution is based on the one of the "Weimarer Republik" before Hitler came to power - which in turn was based on the .... US constitution (as well as the paulskirchen-Verfassung, but thats a different part of history). They DID change aspects of those "parents" of the current german constitution where they learned that they are exploitable by dictators - thats for example why there is a 5% hurdle - the very reason Hitler came to power was not because he got the majority of votes, but because the majority of votes was distributed among many many many very small parties sometimes with a single seat in the parliament. As far as I know Hitler never got much more than 30% of the votes. Thats why todays constitution not only ensures that you have to have at least 5% of the votes to get a seat in parliament (and that means that the parliament is not as fragmented as it was before Hitler) but also that the Government has to have at least 50% of the votes.

Hi, everyone, I find ist great how enthusiastic you are about learning the German language and also taking the naturalization test. Don't put too much pressure on yourself and take it easy. With regard to the naturalization test, I can only say that your wrong answers are difficult to solve due to the ambiguous nature of the question, especially for people who are not yet well versed in the German language and culture. I work on the preparation of examination tasks for vocational training for all of Germany. So I can confidently tell you that if we asked our questions like this, many german examinees would not be able to answer them correctly. In particular, the one question with the answer "Rosenmontag" already shows that no thought was given here. As German citizens, we would dismiss such a question as wrong. Because we know that the carnival season in Germany begins on November 11th at 11:11 a.m. of the year and lasts until „Aschermittwoch“ (which is usually in February) of the following year. As such, „Rosenmontag“ is just one of the days when people wear costumes, masks, etc. So the question should have been better: Which of the listed days falls within the period when people wear masks and costumes? or On which day of the carnival season do the parades mainly take place in Germany? This question would have been a little clearer that way. Let's see if the parades will take place this year, then you can get an impression of it for yourself. The biggest parades take place on „Rosenmontag“ in the „Ruhrgebiet“ (Cologne, Mainz, etc.). With that in mind, wish you all the best.
@jurgens.3964
@jurgens.3964 2 года назад
You are right. And even worse: Rosenmontag (Monday of roses) is the most important day of Carnival in regions like Köln or Mainz. In the region in the south, close to lake Constance (for those who are not that familiar with our Georgraphy: This is big lake in the south surrounded by Switzerland, Austria and Germany), they would not even say "Karnval" (which is the German word for carnival), they would say "Fasnet", and from what I experienced during my childhood there, thursday before Rosenmontag is even more important ("Schmotziger Donnerstag" in local accent, the meaning is "greasy thursday", and its importance reaches down to Italy where they use the same term just in Italian language ("Giovedi grasso").

Hello, I like your style of the videos you make. I actually tried the tests myself today. I am born in Germany, Niedersachsen, but left at age 23 and now live in the Netherlands for more that 30 years already. I found it interesting to see what the questions would be like. I got 95% correct with the 33 question tests, had about 2 questions wrong while not paying attention to the question and 2 that I did not know. The 310 question test was harder. I got about 12-15 wrong answers. I think that foreign people may have it much harder. I think even Dutch people who live close to Germany will fail a lot of the questions. That is because if you had not spend time in Germany you would not know especially many regulatory institutions. I think best chance for correct answers non German language persons would be given from Dutch, Belgian or Danish persons. Non Europeans - especially non western culture countries will find the 310 questionair hard - in my oppinion. Well, I am glad you like it in my 'alter Heimat' - stay strong. Greetings.

I suspect that many are more likely to stumble upon the political questions, as you often have to read the questions / answers very carefully.

Like Jonathan, I was to qualify as a descendent of German ancestry as I also knew my great grandfather personally for about 12 years of my life. I had collected all the various documents, official translations of English docs, etc, the one missing doc was which ship the family traveled on. Unfortunately, Europe was invaded by a mass of refugees, the German Embassy in Wien suspended accepting applications, then Covid came later. I got my Austrian citizenship last year, passing a 3 part language test, and similar regional, country history and customs knowledge test. I had a similar packet from the government to study, also found an online site with over 800 questions. Quizzed myself thoroughly. When I took the official test, which was computerized, I finished it in 10 minutes, passed, and the rest was history. Good luck to you both! LG aus Villach-Warmbad

As a state official I have to evaluate the tests occasionally. I always find it interesting when people spontaneously try it. The questions also vary from test to test and some are always added and others are omitted. Memorizing is not a good option. :P Question 10 is a tough one. You are allowed to make false statements (answer A), but not in every case. This is why A is wrong and B is right. For Question 14: "Bundes" is Federal Republic and "Landes" is State. It is the Federal Republic of Germany but it is the Federal State of Baden-Württemberg. After that there are regions (for Freiburg this is also Freiburg since it does not have a region but it is surounded by the region called Landkreis Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald) and after those is local like city or community. Voting age is 18 at federal repulic and for federal state but 16 for regional and local. 16 is also a tough one since forced labour is nor allowed as a sanction itself but inmates have to work in prison and are kind of forced to do so. But they get paid to do so.

First off, Ashton: huge kudos and congratulations for your dissertation. When's the party? Just a pro tip: learn to dissect German compound words. Not a critique, only a tip for possibly making your future lessons in German a bit easier, and take away the anxiety of such multiple choice questions. Try to see if you recognize part of a compound word. For example in the question, "Was ist mit dem deutschen Grundgesetz vereinbar?", the Grundgesetz should have popped up quite a few times, I believe. It also seemed that you knew quite well that this meant the German basic law, the German constitution. So the question seemed to be fairly clear to you as well. What is possible/legal/acceptable within the German constitution? Jonathan gave you two choices, with one being the 'mean' answer because you didn't know it. But dissect it: "Prügel" and "Strafe". The word "Strafe" might have been known to you as punishment. That might have already given you an indication of what the first word might indicate: "Prügel" was not something you knew. So just go ahead to the second available answer: Or, take the second compound word "Geldstrafe". Again "Strafe" = punishment, and "Geld" should have come up quite a few times in your German lessons by now. Geld = money. So it would be a 'money-punishment'. Or in English, a monetary fine. Now which one of these two sounds more probable for German law? An unknown punishment, or a monetary fine? You wouldn't even necessarily need to know the exact phrase of the first question, just assign probabilities for what seems more likely: a monetary fine, or something that also sounds like punishment, but probably is NOT a monetary fine? As there can't be multiple correct answers, which one would be more likely? So a corrporeal, physical beating, or a monetary fine? In the same way, you can most often dissect most other German compound words. Check out what seems familiar, what you are pretty certain you know. Then go back or forth from those words, and try to discern the meanings of all the remaining parts of the compound word. That's the beauty of German. While there are a few loan-words from other languages, they are still fairly few and far in-between. You don't need to know tens of thousands of actual German words in your vocabulary to get by, you need only roughly five to eight thousand total. Then you can dissect and discern most compound words' meanings by analyzing the meanings of those easier to understand base words. Only when you enter speciality fields in crafts, jobs, science, or such does the vocabulary suddenly balloon into tens of thousands. For every day life you can easily get by with five to eight thousand words pretty comfortably to hold a fluent conversation. OK, the declinations are not totally easy, I get it, but you will get the jist of it, I am certain. /edit: I just noticed that you listed the same question for 14 and 16. For 14 the question and the multiple choice answers were correct, for 16 we saw the same questions and answers as for 14. Interestingly enough, answer B was correct for both 14 and 16, despite them having completely different contents. BTW: I took that little test on the Michigan site, so I recognized that something was off a bit. No problem there, just noticed it. Wow, and 5.00 AM is definitely an ungodly hour to get up and learn a foreign language as difficult as German. Damn, kudos that you succeeded at doing it since then. All that possibly before your first coffee. And who are these unfortunates who are already up at that time and teach those classes? That is almost cruel and unusual punishment :D

Hi there! Thank you so much for such a great and helpful comment. We totally agree that one o the German language is a lot like legos - if you understand the building blocks you can really kind of deduce your way to the right answer. My problem was I didn't know either end of the legos for Prügelstrafe 😂 . But I think a bit more time practicing and we will be there. Also - sorry about the issues with the graphics in the video on the final question. By the time I got to the end of editing this video, we had so many graphics loaded into the software that even my new iMac was struggling to render in real time. I thought my edits saved... but they did not. 😬 Ugh. And thanks again for the warm wishes on my dissertation. I hope to submit in the next week or so and I really appreciate all of the support. ❤️❤️

@@TypeAshton by the way what just came up in my mind😅 I don‘t know if that gets told or if you already know it, but if you got a double letter after a vocal that nearly always means, that the vocal is pronounced „short“ (no idea if that’s the correct term). So for example in „Schiff“ and „Stuttgart“ the i and u are pronounced short and not like the i in „tief“ or the u in „Schuh“😅 Just a random fact that maybe could help if you didn’t know yet😅
@neffisback9729
@neffisback9729 2 года назад
The short i in german is nearly identical to your i in "stiff" where as the long i (or ie) in "tief" would be similar to your ie in "thieves. For the short u in german you could take as an example your word "could" or "should". Your ou in these words are nearly identical to the short u in "Bus" or "Stuttgart". The long form of u in for example "Schuh" or "Tuch" is similar to your double o in "noodle" or "Boots"😅 No idea if that explanaition helps you but maybe it's easier to remember or so...😅

okay that was probably your best video so far when it comes to entertainment. and that with such a boring topic, great job! and dont worry about the test, the issue was clearly a lack of german vocabulary, words that have no place in every day language (i mean imagine a typical smalltalk that includes "prügelstrafe"). maybe try watching tagesschau every day, they tend to report on a wide spectrum of news including politics/laws and over time you will add those rare words to your knowledge.

What I have heard about this "Einbürgerungstest" is, that the most important is to have sufficient knowledge of German language. If you do, there are enough questions where the answer is obvious. I, being a German citzen my whole live, am wondering why they don't split into a test about Germany ("know your rights, your duties, what's forbidden, how life in Germany is organized etc.) and another one related to the level on knowledge on German language. Because: Even if you language skills are not that good, in most situations you may use a dictionary to translate German language to your language, or even find a German speaking your language, at least for English. So once you can understand the sentences it is much easier to understand their meaning.

I think the real challenge of the naturalization test is that your german skills need to be good enough to understand the questions and possible answers correctly. That's why Germans will probably never fail in this test even if they get some answers wrong it will never be more than 50% wrong answers for them. I have tried it before and got everything correct but i am someone who is interested in politics. Hallo Super Familie !

I’m not conversant with everything, I can thank my late beloved mother for it, I was a native German speaker as a child but I still managed to get most of the test questions right because I still know enough German to guess the context. Its just way too easy for a multiple choice but to tell the truth, if I don’t know any German or I knew nothing about German history and culture, I would have been lost at sea! I’m not what foreigners call the ugly American abroad.

I am pretty sure you two would pass the test with flying colors. And respect for your efforts and hard work to learn German. Jonathan is almost perfect and Ashton is also very good.

Wow thanks! That is a very nice compliment. This was really a lot of fun to make and good practice to see where we are with our reading comprehension.

Hi guys, first of all my highest respect for both you diving much deeper into german language and taking so many classes in such a short time frame. Seems to me its like learning german intravenously. The naturalization test wasnt that hard for me as a german native, but might be tough for those whose vocabulary is not sufficient. I am sure you have add the words you didnt know before to your list and will remeber once. Hope you fully understood the wrong answers as well. Its the first time to hear you both speaking german in longer sequences. It sounds good already and ausbaufähig/expandable. Waiting for your first video totally in german. Just joking now. If you pronounce the following toungue twistling sentence, I will vote for your german naturalization: In Bacharach am Achenbach da machten mich die Wachteln wach(as fast as you can). I wish you a nice week and stay healthy.

Now THAT is a good tongue twister! Thank you! Very similar to the common English on.... Shelly sells seashells by the sea shore. 😉 Always fun, thank you so much and we are really glad you enjoyed the video.

@@TypeAshton Well that one is good to train the german pronounciation of "ach" and like yours in english is much more Fischers Fritz fischt frische Fische, frische Fische fischt Fischers Fritz. I am sure in let say 4-5 years you will way back of Jack's german languages skills. So good to start by now when you want to catch up. I can really imagine your faces when he comes back from Kindergarten and school with new words you may be cant find in a dictionary :-D

@@howierfs5471 I teach German as a second language to adults. And it is very funny how shocked they sometimes are by the words they heard from their children. ;o))

Glückwunsch an euch! Herzlich Willkommen🥳 Bleibt bitte weiterhin so aufgeschlossen. Genau solche Menschen brauchen wir alle! Meine Frau hatte 33/33 Punkten erreicht. Fakt ist, dass nicht viele Menschen, die in Deutschland geboren und aufgewachsen sind, diesen Test bestehen würden. Da könnte man ja drüber nachdenken, die deutsche Staatsbürgerschaft auch abzuerkennen 😀
