Former German U-Boat engine in service at the Lancashire Evening Post, Castle Yard Depot, Preston 1949.
This M.A.N. 400hp diesel engine was acquired by the Lancashire Evening Post as an auxiliary power plant. It drove 2 sets of electrical generators that supplied power to the Post's printing presses located in Castle Yard on the north side of Fishergate. The engine was sourced from a WW1 German submarine then being scrapped at Liverpool in 1923. It remained in service until 1949.

During the war the U-boats sank about 2,779 ships for a total of about 14,000,000 tons GRT. This figure is roughly 70% of all allied shipping losses in all theatres of the war and to all hostile action. The most successful year was 1942 when over 6,000,000 tons of shipping were sunk in the Atlantic.
