the thing to me that really makes english L/S vowels connect to german L/K vowels is that in both of them, the length of the vowel can also slightly change the pronunciation of the vowel. this is especially true in english where the long and short a and u and i can sound completely different. just thought it was interesting. also, maybe it would be nice to mark long vowels with an accent or otherwise a double vowel in a future spelling revision of german.

The thing is the length of a vowel also affects the "quality" of it. Short vowels are also more open. Höhle is a really closed vowel vs. Hölle, which, apart from shorter, is also more open. The same happens with the other vowels. So it's really important to know that because otherwise a student will just make the vowel shorter or longer and will still be perceived as not totally accurate by a native speaker.

I am from Poland. For me the most difficult is way in which german sentences are constructed, especially position of verb. It is difficult to understand sentences in which part of the verb is on the begining and rest on the end of the sentence.

All this reminded me of a linguistic class I had and trying to understand the phonetic alphabet. I did not do well in that class. I'll have to watch this over and over in short segments and take notes. Still not sure it will help. I usually just try to imitate how people say things. I think getting a good German pronunciation is going to be pretty difficult for me compared to some other languages I've learned.

Actually German is pretty consistent with its spelling so you can tell how a word is pronounced even if you've never heard it before EDIT:There are just a few exceptions like the ones you mentioned but it's all about memory German is more phonetic English on the other hang is almost never consistent

Not only vowel length changes, but also the vowel itself. If you take Höhle as baseline and pronounce Hölle after, the ö in Hölle is shifted a little bit to an ä.

Ich denke, der Unterschied ist vielleicht nicht nur die Länge, sondern auch die Öffnung der Vokalen. Wenn es zwei Konsonanten nach einem Vokal gibt, dann wird der Vokal geöffnet ausgesprochen. Ausnahme sind Vokalen, die danach ein H oder E haben (also dann werden die Vokalen in diesem Fall geschlossen ausgesprochen). Wenn es nur ein Konsonant nach einem Vokal gibt, dann wird der Vokal geschlossen ausgesprochen. Zum Beispiel: Hoff-nung (geöffnetes o), Hof (geschlossenes o), Pohl (geschlossenes o). Möch-te (geöffnetes ö) Schön (geschlossenes ö) Bildung (geöffnetes u) Huhn (geschlossenes u) Anruf (geschlossenes u) Still (geöffnetes i) Liebe (geschlossenes i) usw. Es gibt bestimmt noch einige Ausnahmen. Ihr dürft mich ruhig ergänzen oder korrigieren. ;) p.s I tried to write in german the best I can. I hope you all understand. Vielen Dank! :)

Da Cari hier immer über alles gelobt wird, muss auch mal dieses sein: Mir gehen die Schnürsenkel auf, wenn sie in fast jeder Episode ihre (hart)westfälische Aussprache für die (einzig) richtige hinstellt - na, vielleicht auch "nur" in vielen, für meinen Geschmack zu vielen Episoden! Das ist die Ecke, wo man das Schluss-ER zum A macht, bei aller Frömmigkeit nicht in die KiRche, sondern die KiAche geht - darf jeder wie er's/sie's mag, ABER NICHT DEUTSCHLERLENDEN ALS HOCHDEUTSCH VERKAUFEN!!! Und heute hört sie auch noch keinen Unterschied zwischen J's "Höhle" & "Hölle " Setzen, 6!

Dies ist ein sehr nützliches Video! aber um 02:10 scheint mir, dass Cari in beiden Fällen den gleichen Vokalton ausspricht - nach und fach. Es ist sehr schwer für mich, den Unterschied zu hören!

I have so many problems with i and e in German and ü... :( (I was born and raised in Kentucky,and now I live in Bavaria) I have a form of dyslexia..which does not help at all..Not really bad...but makes me feel ...awful..Is their anyone that can teach or help someone that is like me?
