Watch as the FGS Hamburg conducts tight turns while inbound to Devonport Naval Base in Plymouth, UK. This was training being provided to the Germany Navy by the Royal Navy.
FGS Hamburg (F220) is a Sachsen-class frigate of the German Navy. The frigate is one of many German warships to participate in Fleet Operational Sea Training (FOST) provided by the Royal Navy, usually out of His Majesty's Naval Base Devonport. This includes making tight turns around Plymouth Sound in all weathers; such as high winds and rain.

What is the manoeuvre called, is it a Williamson turn? It's always amazing to see a ship weighing 6,000 tonnes and 140 metres long turn around in such a small area, and the Sachsen class doesn't even have a bow thruster! Thirty years ago, I was allowed to sail on a cargo ship that was perhaps 90 metres long during a change of anchorage. We sailed into an even tinier harbour basin and I thought it would be impossible to ‘park’ the ship properly there, but the captain moved the ship with a calmness of mind, as if he were pushing a shopping trolley back into the berth. Incredible people, these sailors!

Being a citizen of Hamburg I must say that our grey motoryacht behaves quite well in the maneuvers (at least by watching from the outside, maybe there was some yelling on the bridge...). But - there is always a but - I noticed corrosion marks here and there. So there is some room for improvement, I believe. Go on fellows, keep her tidy! 🙂 And it is almost a shame that we couldn't watch the moment of docking.

Nothing you can do about it. Its a sea going heavy duty vessel. It aint a cruise liner, that is painted after every single cruise almost. Also, that corrosion doesnt really go in to the material, but is merely superficial.

The area is very narrow so it got very close to the shore, indeed. However, the manouvres are always planned in safe water depths and only the more experienced officers of the watch manouvre thought Plymouth. There are weeks, if not months, invested in planning this passage.👍

1. They had a port pilot on board. 2. It was pretty close to the red buoy and the rocks so not in the middle of the channel. The pilot was happy to steer this maneuver with a decent engine? Why so narrow, there's a great bay with all the time it needs to play it safe. Risky with high winds.
@Lupus_Indomitus
@Lupus_Indomitus 19 часов назад
Not really. These ships have great maneauverability and everything, so no real danger. Also, that wind iskt really much on a coast. Only like 6bft to 7bft. Maybe in stronger gusts 8bft. Thats like not a lot of wind for a naval vessel wih experienced crew. Which the Hamburg (the ship in this video) has.

@@CobraEmergency I agree. But when an unexpected wave, a rogue wave. Where it's 60 to 80 feet high. It hits the ship's broadside, stern, maybe dead on. A person is staring straight up at this wall of water, not to mention thousands of tons of water. Another fascinating story of a perfect storm, Typhoon Cobra. December 1944.
@shi01
@shi01 9 дней назад
@@scorpion19142001 Tsunami waves only raise near the cost to any meaningful size and they don't happen surprisingly. Rogue waves only appear in storms. So it's very unlikely the wave would hit the ship broadside or stern, because the waves in a storm generally all come from one direction, rogue waves included.
@scorpion19142001
@scorpion19142001 9 дней назад
@@shi01 Rogue waves are unpredictable, and not before or after a storm. It's a combination of several factors of several waves that meet each other's. There are stories from Cape Hope, Skeleton Coast, (this for the most part where hurricanes are born) Cape Horn of killer waves. Where there were no storms, just the Atlantic meeting the Pacific. There is the story of the Ocean Ranger, and yes it was a very violent storm. The perfect storm, I think the movie was good as well as the book.
