Love your videos, and man do I hate to rain on your parade. But I'm fairly sure you put in the cleats wrong. They're supposed to be nailed up through the welt with the 'leaf' part of the cleat facing out on the side. They have the long nail so you can then fold the part sticking out back down and tuck it under the leaf part. Google 'gebirgjager boots' to see for yourself.. Sorry! Or if this was at the request of the customer, disregard and good video as always. And happy new year!

Agree, it would make more sense the studs would be on the bottom similar to what he’s calling the “hob nails”. But in his defense it seems like the drawing shows both placed around the perimeter, fins as well as studs.

Heinrich Harrer, Austrian mountaneer and adventurer wore mountaineering boots just like the pair you recreated. Harrer and four other German climbers left Germany for India on an expedition to climb Nanga Parabat. Harrer was in India with a four man team scouting the Diamir Face for a way to the summit of Nanga Parbat when war broke out in 1939. The team of German climbers were arrested by the British and interned in a detention camp in India. The boots you recreated appear on the feet of our intrepid climbers in the movie, Seven Years in Tibet. Maybe you recall the film about this? Harrer was the man American Actor, Brad Pitt, was cast to portray in the film. British actor, David Thewlis, portrays the expedition leader, Peter Aufschnaiter.

Two of the other escapees were Rolf Magener and Heins von Have. They successfully traveled 2,400Km across India and Burma disquised as both English officers and Swiss businessmen, before reaching Japanese lines. Along the way they dined at British officers clubs, had taylored uniforms made, traveled as officers on trains and frequented restaurants/hotels where the British and Americans stayed. After convincing the Japanese they were'nt spies, they were then flown to Japan and spent the rest of the war as Honorary Consuls at the German Embassy in Tokyo. They were then repatriated in 1947, with Rolf Magnerer being imprisoned by the Americans on his returne to Germany. This tale is worthy of a movie by itself The irony was, if they had not escaped the camp in 1944, they would have returned home to Germany several years earlier with the rest of the internees from Dehradun. Magener's memoir, Prisoner's Bluff, details their adventure and is well worth a read.

12:11 I knew there was something wrong when I noticed as he’s hammering one of the edge cleats in, another one popped off. Another guy in the comments mentioned those are supposed to be inserted vertically not horizontally LOOL. And he seems to be right when you google gebirgsjager boots.

I could not figure how those spikes were to give better grip the way it was mounted to these particular boots. You are right, your mentioned picture search made immediate sense; they are to be directed head down from bottom of the sole. Well, cant get everything perfect. The drawing was not very detailed and theres not many icy mountains to climb in his urban area, just a few neighbourly hills... :)) He makes beautiful works else in general. I wish I had anyone near his skills in my neighbourhood. All I have here is dubiously incompetent and uber greedy guys with a motorized polish machine making no better result than what I can polish by hand, they carry a small selection of shoe laces (end of story yet they call themselves "Cobblers"), and can make double copies of simpler models of existing keys...

Buona sera e buon anno a tutti.

from what I've seen about mountain boots from the period, the cleats you hammered through the side of the boot are suposed to go up through the sole and get hammered around like a hook with the thin sides to the side of the boot.

Looking at period boots. It looks like the side studs you had should've been nailed into the bottom of the sole and the excess stud clinched over the welt after coming through the welt. The "wings" that you have on the bottom should be on the side with the more "stud" shape on the bottom.
@Altair4314
@Altair4314 Год назад
You're correct. I have an original pair (found years ago at a Polish flea market - they look gruesome and the bent over nails just add to the effect) which are exactly as you describe - and the 'wings' overlap.

Yep. The boots in the vid look Blake Stitched, and the outsole edges pretty close to the upper. Probably need something with a pukka Norwegian Welt to make it work.
@Unknown_Ooh

You'd think a RU-vid channel that features fixing shoes and boots could've done the same research a commenter could do to make those mountain boots more period correct. I'd rather watch a video of the commenter making the boots.

Spot on and how uneven were they anyway?? No symmetry, no measuring, not even close to being the same side to side and never mind how uneven the hobnails were too, sheesh, amateur hour... The least one could do would be to measure it all out...

A bit late, but Happy New Year! You certainly put some interesting stuff on your channel. The nails are called ‘Tricouni’. Search for Tricouni images to see how they are fitted. The nails go up through the sole and are bent over after cutting to length to prevent them pulling out when using the edge of the boot when climbing on rock.

Might be a good idea to send some spares for such a rugged hobnail like that. If the customer is going to use them for what they were intended, he/she will no doubt lose some along the way regardless if you welded them on. According to doctrine, most mountain companies of the period had someone trained to replace the nails as they got lost, during normal usage on the ice. They weren’t trained cobblers, by any stretch, just trained in the most minor repair such as hobnail replacement.
